    a paper FAFSA on the paper Student Aid Report that the government will send you What is an EFC and how is it used to determine my eligibility The Federal Government considers the student student s family to be primarily responsible for the cost of the student s education When you submit a FAFSA the Department of Education uses a formula to calculate how much you and your family are expected to be able to pay towards your education based on the information you reported on the FAFSA This amount is called an EFC which stands for Expected Family Contribution The EFC does not represent what you may actually need to contribute towards your education It is rather a baseline amount which is compared to the actual cost of attendance the remaining amount is called unmet financial need Cost of Attendance EFC Financial Need The Office of Student Financial Planning will award the maximum amount of government and institutional financial aid for which the student is eligible in an effort to meet Financial Need The remainder must be met by the student student s family What is verification and why was I selected The Federal Processor randomly selects more than 30 of all FAFSA applications for the process of verification If you are selected for verification the Office of Student Financial Planning OSFP will ask you to provide copies of your prior years tax transcripts and the completed and signed Verification Worksheet for that academic year available online here Additional documents may also be needed Once all of the necessary documents have been received the OSFP electronically transmits the confirmed or corrected information to the government When the government notifies the OSFP that they have processed the transmitted information the verification process can be completed Note If a student is selected for verification it is important to respond to the request for verification documents as quickly as possible to prevent delays in financial aid processing and to ensure optimum eligibility for limited aid sources My parents will not help me pay for school Can I file as an Independent The Federal government considers a student to be Independent if they meet one or more of these criteria Are 24 years of age or older Have already received their first Bachelor s degree and will be working towards their Master s or Doctorate degree during the FAFSA related academic year Are married including those who are separated but not divorced Have children for whom they provide more than half of the economic support Have dependents other than a child or spouse for whom they provide more than half of the economic support Are an orphan both parents are deceased or ward of the court or were a ward of the court until the age of 18 Are currently serving on active duty in the U S Armed Forces for purposes other than training Are a veteran of the U S Armed Forces All other students are considered to be Dependent and

    Make corrections to your FAFSA information online student and parent s PINs are both needed each time any corrections are made by the family Access your applicant data records online for instance you can check your student loan history through the Dept of Education s National Student Loan Database NSLDS Complete your Renewal FAFSA If you have questions about the PIN process contact PIN Customer Service at 800 433 3243 Please note the PIN assigned to you by the Department of Education serves as your identifier to allow you to access your personal information in various U S Dept of Ed systems It serves as your electronic signature for the FAFSA and can also be used as your signature on a Federal student loan For these reasons it is important not to give your PIN number to anyone else 2 Get Organized Use the FAFSA On the Web Worksheet to record your answers optional 3 Submit the FAFSA online A new FAFSA becomes available January 1st of each year for the upcoming academic year for instance the FAFSA for 2013 2014 became available January 1 2013 Another option is to complete a paper FAFSA but this is not recommended as the online application is the best and quickest way to apply for financial aid By completing the FAFSA on line you are guaranteed a much faster turnaround greater accuracy in your answers and on line assistance if needed Make sure you Complete all sections about yourself and your parents or spouse if applicable i e if you are required to answer questions related to them List Carthage College to be a recipient of your FAFSA information Carthage College s School Code is 003839 Electronically sign your application using your PIN and your parent s PIN if you were required to

    Loan Your eligibility is based on your financial need and your academic level see charts below You don t have to make any payments until six months after you graduate or cease to be enrolled at least half time The government pays the interest while you are in school and during your six month grace period Federal Unsubsidized Direct Loan Your eligibility is not based on financial need You may borrow the cost of education minus all other financial aid you receive up to the amount allowed for your academic level see charts below You have two choices for paying interest you may pay it while you are enrolled full time or it can accrue and become part of the principal that you will owe You begin making payments six months after you graduate or cease to be enrolled at least half time Interest Rate and Origination Fee The interest rate for the Federal Direct Subsidized Loan to undergraduate students for the 2012 2013 school year is 3 4 and the rate for unsubsidized loans is 6 8 There is also an origination fee based on the amount of the total loan this origination fee of 1 0 is deducted from your loan before you receive the funds Applying Loan Application Requirements If you are a first time Federal Direct Stafford Loan borrower before you can receive any funds to your account you must complete the following two steps 1 Electronic Master Promissory Note EMPN 2 Electronic Pre Loan Entrance Counseling NOTE Please wait until after June 1 2013 to complete this process for loans for the 2013 2014 award year Loan Eligibility Amounts The maximum Federal Direct Stafford Loan amounts available vary according to academic level and dependency status Please see the tables below for more information Dependent Undergraduate

    supported I am intelligent because Carthage has intelligent leaders I am determined because Carthage is determined to be the best Jeremiah Watson 13 Davenport Iowa Major Psychology Minor Criminal Justice Plans after Carthage Graduate studies in Social Work How would you describe your Carthage experience My Carthage experience has been phenomenal Carthage has become more of a home to me than I could ever imagine The friends and mentors I have gained in the past four years have become an irreplaceable part of my life What does Carthage mean to you Carthage means family to me I have made numerous lifelong bonds on this campus Whether it be my fraternity brothers co workers or professors I have gained more family members than I could have ever imagined What is your favorite Carthage memory I could not pick just one memory of Carthage I would have to say my entire junior year was the highlight of my Carthage career I say this because I was president of my fraternity which was a dream come true and I was able to be the executive in all the functions of a national organization That alone made it the most rewarding and memorable part of my time here at Carthage Celebrating Carthage is a campaign that began in 1991 and an effort to raise 165 million for Carthage 1 million for every year Carthage has existed We are more than 90 percent of the way there Why do you think alumni should be a part of this campaign and give their financial support In order for Carthage to continue to acquire the most talented students we must be willing to invest in them These students will be the future leaders of a generation who will change the world This year s theme at Carthage is I am because we are How does contributing to the Carthage Fund support Carthage s theme this year This theme is supported through all the students who have become great leaders due to the generous donations of past students of Carthage They are what Carthage has been and we can only hope to achieve as much as they have Justin Taylor Kirkpatrick 13 Elkhorn Wis Majors International Political Economy Chinese Minor Economics Plans after Carthage Many different options however leaning towards taking a gap year in a foreign country What is your favorite Carthage memory My favorite memory of Carthage took place in another country During 2011 2012 I spent the academic year abroad in China While in Beijing I visited Huairou the district with which Carthage has a language exchange While visiting Huairou I met all of our past Chinese Target Language Experts It was amazing to see how much their time at Carthage had changed their lives and how much of an impact it was having in this community So for me my favorite memory at Carthage is not necessarily what Carthage is doing for me but the international connections that Carthage is allowing me to make
