    Hedberg Library Tour Religious Life Student Life Dean of Students Career Services Dining Health and Counseling Center Security Back to previous page Carthage faculty chosen to participate in humanities program April 12 2013 by Staff Two members of the Carthage faculty were chosen to participate in the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Programs for College and University Teachers a competitive opportunity for professors and scholars in the humanities Professors Michael Brent and Joseph McAlhany were selected to attend a series of seminars taking place in summer 2013 Michael Brent a post doctoral fellow and professor of Western Heritage and philosophy will attend the seminar Metaphysics and Mind at Washington University in St Louis This five week seminar will explore issues in causation ontological reduction and the relation of physics to the special sciences Prof Brent also will have the opportunity to meet with notable philosophers and discuss their work Professor Joseph McAlhany an associate professor of Great Ideas and Classics will attend The Centrality of Translation to the Humanities New Interdisciplinary Scholarship an institute that will examine translation and the role it plays in the humanities For three weeks Prof McAlhany and 25 of his peers will be introduced to the emerging field of translation studies and delve into the complex issues that translation involves Topics include a study of biblical translations the rise of Inter American literature and the translation of Freud News English honor society hosts reading event with Kenosha school Carthage faculty chosen to participate in humanities program Alumnus takes faculty position at renowned London university Student blog describes action during Omrit excavation Carthage RockSat team prepares for launch Carthage welcomes luncheon speaker Christopher Ruud New shadowing program lets students sample health care careers Winners announced in Carthage s international photo contest Carthage unveils plans for

    families facing conflict He worked as a staff writer for The Clergy Journal magazine A resident of Racine Rev Larson there developed Gener age of Racine a consulting service to advise church executives on ministry to the aging Rev Larson came to Carthage in 1991 In the Religion Department he mainly has taught classes on scripture and gerontology In the Communication and Digital Media Department he has focused on public speaking and mass communications courses This is the second time he has served as dean of the chapel following a period in the early 2000s when he oversaw the operations during the search for a permanent leader Rev Larson has emphasized the inclusiveness of the College s ministry reaching out to worshippers from other denominations and world religions and he provides extensive spiritual counseling to those in the Carthage community He initiated the Let s Talk video series dedicated to religious and ethical issues Rev Larson earned his D Min M Div and B D degrees from the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago and an A B from Bethany College in Lindsborg Kan He has been married to his wife Letty for 52 years The couple has three adult children and three grandchildren Carthage New Town Award Wally Graffen Wally Graffen Director of Organization Development Midwest Region for the Boys Girls Clubs of America received the Carthage New Town Award Mr Graffen has devoted his career to the Boys Girls Club organization which strives to inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential His association with the Boys Girls Club began in 1970 when he became the ninth member of the Boys Club of Oshkosh Wis In 1979 he received the Boys Club of Oshkosh Youth of the Year Award He began working for the Oshkosh organization one year later From 1980 to 1993 he held the positions of program director facility director and assistant executive director In 1993 Mr Graffen was named executive director of the Boys Girls Club of Kenosha Under his leadership the organization grew from serving 130 Kenosha youth to more than 9 000 Its annual budget expanded from 150 000 to 2 million Today the Kenosha organization has 12 locations and one athletic park A new 80 000 square foot facility opened in June 2011 Mr Graffen was a driving force behind the facility s successful 13 8 million capital campaign Housing the Madrigrano Family Sports Complex and the Natalie and Dennis Troha Youth Center the Kenosha facility is one of the largest in the nation In October 2012 Mr Graffen accepted a position with the Boys Girls Clubs of America as a Regional Service Director and became the Midwest Region s Director of Organization Development in February 2013 Mr Graffen has served many community organizations He served as president of his daughter s Parent Teacher Association and swim team and as a board member for the Kenosha Chamber of Commerce He also served on the Kenosha County Economic Development and

    has been a tremendous ambassador for our country Kenosha and the College On May 26 she will share her journey with the Class of 2013 and charge each of them with finding a way to be a positive force in the world thereby joining her as further testaments to the transformative power of this incredible institution Originally from Kenosha Miss Kaeppeler graduated from Carthage in 2010 with a bachelor s degree in music emphasis in vocal performance On Jan 14 2012 she was crowned the 93rd Miss America only the second woman from Wisconsin to hold the national title As Miss America she traveled the country for The Miss America Organization as the National Goodwill Ambassador for Children s Miracle Network Hospital and as an advocate for children of incarcerated parents In June 2012 she was named to a list of Top 100 Women Leaders in STEM science technology engineering and mathematics by STEMconnector org in partnership with U S News World Report She is currently the national spokesperson for Big Brothers Big Sisters The Rev Larson has taught religion and public speech at Carthage since 1991 and became Dean of Siebert Chapel in 2011 He has served as a Lutheran pastor in Chicago St Louis and Racine Wis on the staff of the Metro Chicago Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and as co director of post doctoral education at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago He was for 20 years proprietor of Gener age of Racine a consultation service on ministry for the aging In this capacity he traveled widely presenting workshops to assist church executives and clergy in providing enhanced ministry to aging congregants The Rev Larson earned his D Min M Div and B D degrees from the Lutheran School of Theology in

    to all College and academic honoraries including departmental or disciplinary honor societies These would include Alpha Lambda Delta Alpha Chi ODK and All College Honors Service groups Greek organizations and other organizations will be allowed to wear pins or badges if they wish You may not have anyone accompany you across the stage to receive your diploma Cap and gowns are to be turned in after commencement in Tarble Arena Tickets We encourage you to invite your family and friends to your graduation however this event requires tickets Each graduate will receive five 5 tickets when he she completes the survey and pays the 20 cap and gown fee at Graduation Gear Up or in the Office of Institutional Advancement You may request additional tickets and approximately 10 days before the ceremonies we will distribute any remaining tickets Please do not count on any additional tickets If you lose your tickets you are not guaranteed replacement tickets so please be sure to store the tickets in a safe place Tickets will not be distributed before March 6 2012 Seating The seats in the TARC are not reserved and are filled on a first come first seated basis Doors to the TARC open at noon however entrance to the Field House will be restricted until 1 p m Large video screens help to ensure everyone will be able to see the Commencement ceremony Overflow Seating If you have more than five guests who wish to join you on campus for the Commencement ceremony there will be a live video feed in the Todd Wehr Center TWC Room 128 to accommodate people without tickets for the TARC There will be a large screen with audio in the room Doors to the TWC Room 128 will open at noon The facility is air conditioned with easily accessible restrooms This is a very good option for people with small children those who find it difficult to sit for long periods of time and those who do not wish to deal with a large crowd Online viewing Log on to live carthage edu to access links for live video and audio streaming webcasts Your family and friends may view the New Alumni Convocation May 24 4 30 p m Baccalaureate May 26 11 a m and Commencement May 26 2 30 p m Restrooms The Field House is located on the third level of the TARC There are no restrooms available in the Field House The closest restrooms are one flight below For people who cannot manage the stairs there is an elevator available Special Needs Seats A space is reserved at the front of the room for people in wheelchairs or those who cannot stand However only one other member of your party may accompany each person requiring seating in this area There is a lot of standing that occurs during the ceremony Guests in wheelchairs may wish to arrive early to ensure they have a front row seat so they may see all
