  • Model United Nations — Carthage College
    international issues and a willingness to express your ideas How can you benefit from being a member of MUN Model United Nations helps develop a vast array of skills needed in the professional world A participant s public speaking debating writing and research skills will all be greatly improved Negotiation skills will also be significantly enhanced as you work closely and often intensely with other delegations to refine a resolution that can be passed by the Model United Nations The organization was founded in 1997 and has since grown in size and achievement What exactly do we do you may ask MUN attends at least two conferences a year in cities such as Chicago New York and St Louis At these conferences we attend a simulation of a session of the United Nations and represent the interests of an assigned country In recent years we have represented such countries as Turkey The Russian Federation Costa Rica Austria Laos and Singapore In acting in the country s best interests we are not allowed to let our personal opinion interfere in the policy we argue for and must stick to the stance of the country we represent Another goal of the organization

  • New President — Carthage College
    Carthage Prior to becoming Dean of the School of Music Dr Woodward was for four years Dean of Graduate and Professional Studies where he led the establishment of the college s first doctoral program in physical therapy as well as an expansion of the master s degree programs in business administration education exercise science and sport management In 2010 he served as interim Provost Vice President for Academic Affairs leading the college in the formation of a new ten year strategic plan IC 20 20 that focuses on academic enhancement elevation and holistic education Mr Woodward has increased gifts from alumni in scholarship funding in special touring and contemporary music programs and for the endowment and recently implemented a new merit aid program to attract outstanding music students Under his leadership the School of Music has created a new vision focusing on creativity diversity and entrepreneurship in the arts and begun to develop several programs with conservatories throughout Asia Ghana and South America As Dean of Graduate Studies he doubled enrollment and applications and helped create a program of post doctoral teaching and research fellows A strong supporter of diversity as provost he led a program of minority pre doctoral fellows for the School of Humanities and Sciences as well as hosted the 2011 National Conference on Undergraduate Research with more than 3 000 students from around the country presenting their research and creative work Dr Woodward states It is a very special honor to be chosen to succeed President Campbell and I am humbled by the appointment Carthage College is an inspiring and beautiful institution with a wonderfully solid and firm foundation After my visits to the campus and after meeting so many members of the Carthage community I feel certain that this college is poised on the brink of becoming a true leader in undergraduate higher education in the United States The best of what an undergraduate education can be is still in front of us and Carthage College will be one of the institutions leading this new era What a fabulous place and what an exciting future we all have to work toward and look forward to together Dr Woodward joined Ithaca s Department of Music Theory History and Composition as a composer in 1984 becoming a full professor in 2000 From 1985 to 2003 he was chair or co chair of graduate studies in music and director of summer programs in music and from 1981 to 1983 he was director of music admissions and assistant to the dean He has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses and has written works for orchestra wind ensemble band and chamber ensemble as well as jazz popular and theater music He earned his bachelor s degree from the University of Connecticut master s degree from Ithaca College and Doctor of Musical Arts from Cornell University where he was a student of Karel Husa He previously served on the music faculty at Cornell and at Valparaiso University and was
