  • Carthage music professor honored with award — Carthage News — Carthage College
    my joy to work with some truly remarkable young musicians and it is to their credit that this award has been presented The award is the namesake of Carlo Sperati 1888 Luther graduate professor emeritus founder of the Luther College Concert Band and the driving force behind all music touring at Luther College Ripley began his instrumental teaching experience as a band director at various schools throughout Iowa and Minnesota including Mayo High School in Rochester Minn and Crestwood High School in Cresco Iowa He went on to hold faculty positions at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff and the Eastman School of Music in Rochester N Y Prof Ripley currently serves Carthage as director of instrumental music activities conducts the Concert Band and Wind Orchestra teaches instrumental conducting and is head of the music education program Jim Ripley represents the very best of the Carthage faculty said President Gregory Woodward He is a dedicated pedagogue a highly talented musician and a true leader among the faculty here at Carthage Jim has created a marvelous instrumental program through his own excellence and perseverance and the College and the community are greatly enriched through his efforts Under Prof Ripley s direction the Wind Orchestra has completed three tours of Japan where Prof Ripley serves as the principal guest conductor of the Sakuyo Wind Philharmony of Sakuyo University The Wind Orchestra has also appeared on numerous occasions at the Wisconsin Music Educators annual meeting as well as the Wisconsin Chapter of the National Band Association s annual convention He also serves as secretary for the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles In the time that Dr Ripley has been here he has been able to revitalize our instrumental music program said Prof Corinne Ness chair of the Music Department Jim is a

  • Carthage student interning at prestigious theatre — Carthage Theatre — Carthage College
    at the prestigious Chicago Shakespeare Theater With the internship she gets hands on experience with all of the day to day operations at one of the more prominent and prestigious theatres in the country Whether I m involved with theatre professionally or not I want to keep in it my life in some way and this is a way to do that said Shannon who is double majoring in theatre and communication I am ridiculously excited to be doing this I still can t believe it Shannon performs various tasks for the theatre including assembling press kits planning and hosting special events and openings and assisting in the execution of the theatre s marketing plan It s a lot of work she said but it s an incredible experience The Chicago Shakespeare Theater has more than 600 annual performances performed 48 weeks of the year and engages nearly 200 000 people in the metropolitan Chicago area It has received numerous awards including 62 Joseph Jefferson Awards three Laurence Olivier Awards and the coveted Regional Theatre Tony Award The Regional Theatre Tony Award honors a non profit professional regional theatre company in the United States that has displayed a continuous level of artistic achievement and contributes to the growth of theatre nationally It is one of the most prestigious awards in the industry Shannon learned about the internship from theatre professor Martin McClendon I got my resume together and then went two months without hearing from them Shannon said Then out of the blue I had a phone interview and two weeks later I got offered the position I was totally surprised With two majors and her internship responsibilities Shannon is extremely busy She interns 25 hours a week with the theatre not including the four hour commute She also has

    2012 by Michael Moore Prof Kimberly Greene chair of Carthage s Art Department is among the first four recipients in the Racine Art Museum s Artist Fellowship program Each fellowship in the biannual program comes with financial support for new creative work and culminates with a solo show in fall 2013 The nationally prominent Racine Art Museum regularly exhibits national leaders in ceramic art Kimberly Greene Sponsored by the Osborne and Scekic Family Foundation the fellowship program aims to showcase the diversity and vitality of the Racine Kenosha visual arts community by supporting the professional development of this region s artists Recipients of the fellowship which is juried by the Executive Director and Curator of Collections of the Racine Art Museum are determined by the quality of their portfolios According to RAM the first winners span a variety of styles and media The fellowship exhibition is planned from August to November 2013 at the Wustum Museum of Fine Arts in Racine News English honor society hosts reading event with Kenosha school Carthage faculty chosen to participate in humanities program Alumnus takes faculty position at renowned London university Student blog describes action during Omrit excavation Carthage RockSat team prepares for launch
