  • Biography — Gregory Berg — Carthage College
    performances Professor Berg received his bachelor s degree from Luther College Decorah Iowa in 1982 and was named by the faculty as outstanding music major of his class He went on to earn a master s degree in vocal performance at the University of Nebraska Lincoln From there he was privileged to be singer with the prestigious Lyric Opera Center for American Artists in 1985 86 His awards as a singer include four first place finishes in state and or regional NATS competitions and he was a district winner of the 1984 Metropolitan Opera Auditions With orchestra he has performed such operatic roles as Count Almaviva Le Nozze di Figaro Michel Il Tabarro Ottone The Coronation of Poppea Schaunard La Boheme Ko Ko The Mikado and Sam Trouble in Tahiti His solo performances with orchestra also include such works as Hodie Mystical Songs and The Songs of Travel Vaughan Williams Magnificat and St John s Passion J S Bach St Nikolai Mass Haydn Te Deum Dvorak Mass for the Children Rutter and Old American Songs Copland He has served as CD DVD reviewer for the Journal of Singing the official scholarly publication of NATS the National Association of Teachers of Singing since 2001 Professor Berg is a familiar voice to many people in Southeastern Wisconsin because of his on air work with WGTD FM 91 1 the local NPR affiliate for whom he hosts a daily interview program called The Morning Show His list of noteworthy guests includes Jimmy Carter Alan Alda Bill Moyers and Tim Russert plus such notable musical guests as Thomas Hampson Dimitri Hvorostovsky Eileen Farrell Shirley Verrett and Metropolitan Opera General Manager Peter Gelb He also serves as minister of music at Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Racine Wis He is the composer of three liturgies

    The piece was titled Most Alive and featured lyrics he wrote Music professor James Ripley orchestrated the work Summer 2011 Prof Berg turned critic with a review published in the January issue of Opera News the most widely read opera periodical in the world He reviewed the world premiere of Rio de Sangue at the Milwaukee Florentine in October 2010 The opera received almost universally poor reviews he reports Mine was actually a bit more positive in that I tried to highlight what I thought were successful aspects of the production That said Prof Berg delivered some zingers including the observation How ironic that an opera named for a river should flow so poorly The pacing of events was wayward the tone relentlessly bleak the dialogue poetically stilted and only the briefest occasional attention was given to the characters inner lives Prof Berg also writes the CD DVD review column for the Journal of Singing the official journal of the National Association of Teachers of Singing edited by Richard Sjoerdsma professor emeritus of music December 2009 Prof Berg conducted his sixth Sing Along Messiah at First United Methodist Church as part of their Fine Arts at First series on Dec

    permanent duties in February 2004 after serving seven years at Carthage as an assistant men s basketball coach During that time he helped the Red Men compile a 136 49 record with three CCIW championships three appearances in the NCAA Division III Men s Basketball Championship and third place national finish in 2002 Before starting at Carthage in the 1996 97 academic year Bernero spent nine years as an assistant men s basketball coach two years at Elmhurst College 1995 96 three years at North Park University 1992 94 and four years at the University of Chicago 1988 91 A native of Buffalo Grove Ill Bernero graduated from Lake Forest College in 1987 with a bachelor s degree in business As a member of the men s basketball team he is the Foresters seventh all time leading scorer He earned his master s in business administration from North Park in 1993 Bernero begins a four year term on the NCAA Division III Women s Basketball Championship Committee in 2008 He and his wife Rachel Pearson Bernero live in Kenosha Wis with their daughter Eleanor and son Anthony Rachel a former women s basketball player at North Park University and a
