  • Biography — Martin McClendon — Carthage College
    Rockford College in Rockford Ill He earned a B F A in acting from Rockford College in 1991 and an M F A in acting from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in 1994 He also took a semester of actor training at Regent s College London Martin McClendon performs in Honest at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago 2009 Professor McClendon worked as a professional actor in Chicago and Los Angeles for 10 years before getting involved in teaching He has appeared onstage at Chicago s Steppenwolf Northlight Organic and Victory Gardens theatres among others Most recently he appeared onstage in the Steppenwolf Garage production of Honest in the summer of 2009 The play was originally commissioned by Carthage College He also acted in independent movies both in Chicago and Los Angeles His TV credits include episodes of ER and Early Edition as well as numerous commercials He is a member of AEA SAG and AFTRA In addition to acting he has designed and built scenery in Los Angeles his hometown of Rockford Ill and for Chicago s Defiant Theatre Company as well as other small companies in the Chicago area He received a Jeff Award Citation nomination for

    12 lectures annually formal discussions primarily focused on Heritage texts Professor McShane also co founded and co organizes with Professor Ali a number of Hannibal spin offs such as the Hannibal Book Club an opportunity for students to prepare for the Hannibal Lectures by reading or re reading the relevant books the annual HanniBall gala fundraiser for the lecture series and in the future the Delenda Press s Hannibal Lecture imprint an enterprise dedicated to publishing the lectures In addition he is a founder of another lecture series entitled Book That Changed My Life This series run with the Philosophy Club also provides a number of lectures annually to the Carthage community giving professors an opportunity to discuss their intellectual autobiographies particularly how particular books or musical compositions or artworks etc have influenced their personal development He earned a B A in philosophy and mathematics from St John s College Annapolis Md He earned a master s degree in 1992 and a Ph D in 2000 from the University of Pennsylvania where his dissertation discussed Plotinus critique of discursive rationality He taught philosophy at Loyola University Md from 2001 to 2008 He has published and lectured on a number of

    national prominence give public readings and meet with Carthage students Previously he held a full time position as visiting poet at Columbia College in Chicago from 2007 to 2008 From 2002 to 2005 he was a visiting assistant professor of English at Beloit College where he was also director of creative writing from 2004 to 2005 Previously he worked in the public schools as a visiting artist teaching poetry writing to elementary school students in New York with Teachers and Writers Collaborative and in Chicago with Hands on Stanza where he received the Gwendolyn Brooks Prize for excellence in teaching Prof Meier has published three books of poems In the Pure Block of the Whole Imaginary Omnidawn 2012 Shelley Gave Jane a Guitar Wave Books 2006 and T errain Vague Verse Press 2000 He has published widely in journals including Conjunctions 1913 A Journal of Forms Evening Will Come Columbia Poetry Review Paris Review and others In March 2011 he curated and co wrote a group of daily poems weather reports that constituted the spring issue of the online journal Slope He earned a B A in creative writing from Hamilton College in 1988 and an M A in English
