  • Biography — Julio Rivera — Carthage College
    State University examining trends in the development of the urban fringe in the Phoenix metropolitan area He has brought students to Ometepe Island Nicaragua as part of a service learning course in the Geography and Biology of Nicaragua He has directed numerous undergraduate student senior thesis projects many of which were presented at regional and national conferences He was the recipient of the 2002 Carthage College Distinguished Teaching Award Dr Rivera is a national leader in the in the undergraduate research movement and is the President elect of the Council on Undergraduate Research where he serves on its executive board and was named its volunteer of the year in 2005 He regularly serves as a consultant to other colleges and universities as they develop undergraduate research programs and is part of two National Science Foundation grant programs to expand opportunities for students He serves as a consultant to both government and business including Snap on Tools World Link Inc Racine County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Racine Harbor Commission He is the author of a number of papers and is a member of the Association of American Geographers National Council on Geographic Education the American Conference of Academic Deans

    Carthage Dr Julio Rivera regularly led students on a study tour in Ometepe Island Nicaragua Dr Rivera with a student at his Commencement In 2009 Carthage student Rebecca Woiteshek then a senior was selected to participate in Posters on the Hill in which undergraduate students present their research to members of Congress and their staffs Dr Rivera accompanied Ms Woiteshek to Washington D C where they met Congressman Paul Ryan

  • Biography — Isabel Rivero-Vila — Carthage College
    in Salamanca Spain She also taught French at the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca and at the University of Wisconsin Parkside She has a Ph D in French Linguistics and Literature Universidad de Salamanca Spain and a Bachelor of Arts degree in French Education Universidad de Burgos Spain She has studied at several universities in France and Spain She did her doctoral research in Université de Paris 13 and earned her master s degree from the Université de Caen Basse Normandie France She has also received the extraordinary award after the defense of the first part of her thesis In June 2011 she successfully defended and obtained her Ph D Doctor Europeus in French and Second Language Acquisition from the Universidad de Salamanca The title of her thesis was L interculturel à travers le multimédia dans l enseignement du français langue étrangère In her thesis she provides a method with activities that she developed to teach intercultural aspects of the Francophone world and its representation in Francophone movies for French learners This method is currently being reviewed for publication in Paris She has also developed a successful connection between Carthage and Universidad de Salamanca where each summer she presents the TLE

    world premieres of works by composers Max Yount James Yoghourtjian who dedicated his string quartet to the performers Keith Carpenter Andrew Massey and a self commissioned work by Mark Petering titled Wedding Train for string quartet As a soloist she has performed with the Carthage College Chamber Orchestra the Southern Lakes Masterpiece Chorale Orchestra and the Milton Janesville Choral Union Orchestra In the spring of 2011 she will be the featured soloist with the Rock Prairie Chamber Orchestra at the University of Wisconsin Rock County She has also performed in concert with violinist Rachel Barton Pine saxophonist Branford Marsalis pianist Leonard Rose and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and in joint recitals with Charles Vernon bass trombonist of the Chicago Symphony and New Age pianist Linda Seeley There are several concert series in which Mrs Rivest has been featured including the Musical Arts Society of Delavan Broad Street Concert Series in Lake Geneva MacDowell Club of Janesville Music and More in Racine Cargill United Methodist Church in Janesville Calvary Church in Lake Geneva Fine Arts at First and First United Methodist Church of Racine She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in music education from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee completing license programs in both Instrumental Music Education and General Music Education In 2004 she completed her Masters of Music in Violin Performance from the University of Wisconsin Madison Her teachers include Dr Gerald Fischbach Yuri Beliavsky of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Dr Sam McClure and Dr Tyrone Greive In addition to her performing career Mrs Rivest is an active teacher and clinician She has presented music clinics with students from throughout Wisconsin and Illinois working along side of clinicians such as the Manhattan String Quartet of New York Ara Gregorian of East North Carolina University Dr Sam McClure of Truman State
