    2010 and presented the paper Applying Indigenous Rights The Case of the Mbya Guaraní of Northern Argentina at the Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies conference at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse in October 2010 Spring 2010 Penny Seymoure and Jeffrey Roberg associate professor of political science at Carthage presented a portion of their Spring 2009 sabbatical research to faculty and students at Carthage in November Their talk Tourism at What Price Human Environmental and Socio economic Effects of Tourism was focused on the creation and consequences of a provincial master plan for tourism development near the Iguazu Falls National park in northeastern Argentina Autumn 2009 Penny Seymoure and Jeffrey Roberg spoke about their sabbatical research to the Buenos Aires International Newcomers organization in July The title of the talk was The Good The Bad and The Ugly The Effects of Tourism Professor Seymoure assessed the effects of tourism development in the nearby indigenous Mbya Guarani community of Yryapu Argentina Her manuscript Tourism Development and Guarani Communities in Argentina which discusses cultural economic and psychological changes as a result of tourism development within two Mbya Guarani communities near the Iguazu National Park in northern Argentina has been accepted

  • Biography — Dimitri Shapovalov — Carthage College
    University where he studied choral conducting with Maestro Scott Tucker As director of the A F Siebert Chapel Choir Professor Shapovalov actively promoted the ensemble s mission and visibility on and off campus Since assuming leadership of the ensemble in 2007 he quadrupled its membership and expanded its performance schedule to include regular appearances at the annual Christmas Festival the Family Weekend Worship Service the Homecoming Worship Service the Palm Sunday Concert and many others In 2008 the ensemble received two large donations from enthusiastic congregation members and the singers have since enjoyed performing in their newly purchased red and white robes at important College events Professor Shapovalov took initiative to establish working relationships with local and regional religious communities and the choir looks forward to sharing its music with the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Racine Wis on a biannual basis Professor Shapovalov s other professional interests include musicology piano performance and composition As a musicologist he is a published author and translator on topics connected with Russian culture at the turn of the 20th century He has presented papers on Russian music at national and international conferences including the Prokofiev International Symposium in Manchester UK and the American Musicological Society in Washington DC Having studied piano with Alexander Braginsky at the University of Minnesota Professor Shapovalov has also been active as an accompanist and piano performer He regularly performs solo and collaboratively at Carthage and he has recently performed with the Sapphire Consort Group in the Twin Cities Minn His solo lecture recital in March 2010 featured an all Romantic program He regularly gives workshops and master classes at the meetings of the Kenosha and Racine Music Teachers Associations As a composer Professor Shapovalov studied with Igor Vorobyov at the Glinka Choir College and continued his studies
