  • Flexible supercapacitor raises bar for volumetric energy density | think:blog
    energy density which means they can charge quickly and give a boost of power but don t last long Conversely batteries have high energy density and low power density which means they can last a long time but don t deliver a large amount of energy quickly Microelectronics to electric vehicles can benefit from energy storage devices that offer high power and high energy density That s why researchers are working to develop a device that offers both To continue to miniaturize electronics industry needs tiny energy storage devices with large volumetric energy densities By mass supercapacitors might have comparable energy storage or energy density to batteries But because they require large amounts of accessible surface area to store energy they have always lagged badly in energy density by volume Their approach To improve the energy density by volume the researchers designed a hybrid fiber A solution containing acid oxidized single wall nanotubes graphene oxide and ethylenediamine which promotes synthesis and dopes graphene with nitrogen is pumped through a flexible narrow reinforced tube called a capillary column and heated in an oven for six hours Sheets of graphene one to a few atoms thick and aligned single walled carbon nanotubes self assemble into an interconnected prorous network that run the length of the fiber The arrangement provides huge amounts of accessible surface area 396 square meters per gram of hybrid fiber for the transport and storage of charges But the materials are tightly packed in the capillary column and remain so as they re pumped out resulting in the high volumetric energy density The process using multiple capillary columns will enable the engineers to make fibers continuously and maintain consistent quality Chen said The findings The researchers have made fibers as long as 50 meters and found they remain flexible with high capacity of 300 Farad per cubic centimeter In testing they found that three pairs of fibers arranged in series tripled the voltage while keeping the charging discharging time the same Three pairs of fibers in parallel tripled the output current and tripled the charging discharging time compared to a single fiber operated at the same current density When they integrate multiple pairs of fibers between two electrodes the ability to store electricity called capacitance increased linearly according to the number of fibers used Using a polyvinyl alcohol phosphoric acid gel as an electrolyte a solid state micro supercapacitor made from a pair of fibers offered a volumetric density of 6 3 microwatt hours per cubic millimeter which is comparable to that of a 4 volt 500 microampere hour thin film lithium battery The fiber supercapacitor demonstrated ultrahigh energy density value while maintaining the high power density and cycle stability We have tested the fiber device for 10 000 charge discharge cycles and the device retains about 93 percent of its original performance Yu said while conventional rechargeable batteries have a lifetime of less than 1000 cycles The team also tested the device for flexible energy storage The device

    fed on large prey This small Bolivian species probably fed on the ancient relatives of today s guinea pigs and spiny rats the researchers said Most predators don t go after animals of equal size but these features indicate this small predator was a formidable hunter Croft said The specimen had not been studied in detail after being collected It was provisionally identified as belonging to a particular group of extinct meat eating opossums due in part to its small size Further adding to the identity challenge almost all small sparassodonts have been identified by their teeth and lower jaws which this skull lacks Croft wanted to study the skull because its age is nearly twice that of the oldest known species of meat eating opossum The specimen was found in a mountainous site known as Quebrada Honda Bolivia in 1978 in rock layers dated 12 million to 13 million years ago Structurally extinct meat eating opossums and sparassodont skulls share a number of similarities due to their similar meat eating diet Engelman said No single feature found in the skull was so distinctive that we could say one way or the other what it was Croft said but the combination of features is unique and says this is a sparassodont One key was that a particular bone of the orbit the boney socket of the eye does not touch the nasal bone in an opossum but does in a sparassodont The short snout was a kind of red herring While jaguar sized sparassodonts had them the smaller members of the order had fox like faces And this species was smaller than most of those These smaller sparassodonts also have gaps between their teeth that are absent in most larger species The skull shows no gaps Overall the animal s

    to the reader s discovery in the book s 142 pages Schillace s story about Jacob actually began in 2007 as a dare among three graduate students in Athena Vrettos Gothic literature course at CWRU The goad write a short story as the assigned final paper Schillace was the only one to follow through with the challenge writing the short story in one evening and she still turned in a final paper Over the past six year she added to the short story that turned into the series Schillace also has in the works a three book chronicle called The Witchwood at Nob s End and is nearing completion of a forthcoming nonfiction book called Death s Summer Coat 2015 which examines grief rituals from other cultures to better understand our own Schillace PhD and SAGES fellow who teaches seminars on the history of science and 18th century Gothic literature said much of her writing is about where humans and medicine meet It s an interest she developed as a teen spending hours reading history books in cemeteries Reading about bubonic plague she was both fascinated and horrifies to discovery how many people especially children her own age died of disease This early interest and further study of medical history raised her concerns for young people who strive for normal lives while battling illnesses or coping with disabilities Schillace herself carved out a normal life in an underground house on 50 acres near the old Peabody Coal mining land in Coshocton Ohio Her mother s cancer and her father s heart disease gave her a rare perspective on life When Schillace is not juggling work and writing she is also the managing editor of the journal Culture Medicine and Psychiatry The publication was once housed at Harvard University but is

    energy While several of the women reported overall good health the severity of depression suggests that these caregivers mental health is in jeopardy Juratovac said For example some women may have experienced more depression related to their living situation or relationship to the care recipient yet some women experienced depressive symptoms that may be related to the presence of help from other family members or formal outside agencies The American Association for Retired Persons AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving NAC report that about half of the 66 million family caregivers nationally also work outside the home And women provide more than half of the free caregiving which AARP and NAC estimate would cost more than 450 million annually if someone were paid to do the work These savings to society may overshadow the cost it has on the caregivers economic stability and health Juratovac said It is known from national surveys e g Metlife that caring for someone at home can cost employed women caregivers in obscured ways as they may pass up job advancement lose employment benefits by working fewer hours and strain household budgets to pay for caregiving expenses Juratovac said she hopes the detailed findings promote a discussion among policymakers and employers to help employed caregivers facilitate their dual workloads She suggests for example flexible work schedules that allow employed caregivers to manage their responsibilities on behalf of their care recipient such as consulting with health care providers when necessary during the work day while maintaining their productivity and managing their responsibilities in the paid workplace And since the researchers found it difficult to characterize the variety of part time employment experiences suggestions were made for research and for industry to improve methods for measuring the time and effort that caregivers spend in caregiving tasks

    for teens struggling with a mental illness she said The stigma of the diagnosis often delays parents from seeking treatment And a 2011 Schizophrenia Research literature review found that the more intelligent the teen the greater the suicidal risk than those less cognizant about what is happening to them Those with a higher intelligence also had greater abilities to hide their suicide attempts Most at risk generally are people with psychoses that cause them to lose touch with reality suffer from hysteria and delusions and sound incoherent when talking Such symptoms in teens between 15 and 18 years old can begin abruptly or be mistaken for substance abuse problems or some diseases such as brain illnesses that produce drastic behavioral changes Timmons Mitchell said Parents teachers social workers and others need to be vigilant urged Timmons Mitchell and to err on the side of concern by seeking help for a teen they believe may be suicidal In their Psychiatric Times article Psychosis and Suicidality in Adolescents Timmons Mitchell and Falcone offer warning signs that parents and professionals should watch for Abrupt shifts to abnormal behavior Talking about things that don t make sense Spikes in anger that go beyond normal teen rebellion and disagreements with family members or teachers Speaking about suicide or death and dying Reports from school about strange behavior changes By keeping parents and professionals aware of the warning signs adolescent suicide attempts have declined significantly in Ohio 11 to 6 2 percent over the past 10 years according to the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Alcohol services According to Timmons Mitchell who also is an associate clinical professor of psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve s School of Medicine attributes it to efforts and programs in the Ohio Suicide Plan written
