  • Cadet Life: Commandant of Cadets Biography
    USCG Commandant of Cadets U S Coast Guard Academy Captain Rivera graduated from the U S Coast Guard Academy in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Government She served as Deck Watch Officer aboard Coast Guard Cutter Venturous home ported in Long Beach California She then attended Naval Flight Training in Pensacola Florida earning her wings as CG Aviator 3251 on Coast Guard Day 1995 Captain Rivera s first operational aviation assignment was to Air Station Elizabeth City North Carolina where she flew the HH 60J Jayhawk helicopter In 1998 she commanded one of the first rescue assets on scene and executed night rescues of 43 survivors trapped by rising floodwaters in Eastern North Carolina in the wake of Hurricane Floyd Captain Rivera transferred to Air Station Kodiak Alaska where she served as Standardization Officer and Flight Examiner in the H 60 In 2002 she and her deployed aircrew rescued 23 survivors from a fishing vessel ablaze in the Bering Sea her crew received the Association of Naval Aviation and National Helicopter Association Aircrew of the Year awards and Captain Rivera was also selected for the Order of Daedalians Exceptional Pilot Award Assigned to Coast Guard Headquarters Captain Rivera was the first Aviation Special Missions Manager In this capacity she developed aviation counter terrorism policy while coordinating development operational testing and mission employment of tactical aviation capabilities She also earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College and a certificate in Homeland Security Studies from the National Graduate School Captain Rivera served as Operations Officer Chief Pilot at Air Station Sitka Alaska She then transitioned to the MH 65C Dolphin helicopter and served as Executive Officer at Air Station Borinquen Puerto Rico As Commanding Officer of Air Station Kodiak

    a member of the esteemed Long Blue Line made up of the graduates who have come before you Those that have served our great nation and humanity with honor and distinction The Coast Guard s core values of Honor Respect and Devotion to Duty will be become your guiding principles You are enrolling at the United States Coast Guard Academy a military institution rich in tradition whose sole purpose is to graduate leaders of the highest moral character ready to serve as officers in the U S Coast Guard As the Commandant of Cadets I am charged with your military and professional development I will expect you to live up to our core values and adhere to the Honor Concept which states that Cadets do not lie steal cheat or attempt to deceive You will be expected to adhere to the highest standards of conduct and integrity and have the utmost regard and respect for yourself your fellow cadets the Coast Guard personnel with whom you will work with and the American public you will serve The Coast Guard s missions are difficult ones The safety and security of our nation will depend on you as a member of the smallest branch of the armed forces The American public will rely on you to keep them safe and our ports secure 24 hours a day 365 days a year Therefore we will demand your very best as a swab and during your entire four years at the Academy During Swab Summer in particular you will be challenged and tested physically emotionally and mentally You will be placed under considerable pressure to do things you might think were impossible However through determination hard work and teamwork you will succeed Some people say this education is free It is not Attending the

  • United States Coast Guard Academy::Cadet Life
    Parking No special parking pass will be required if you plan to drive a personal automobile on base to participate in events being held on either Sunday June 28th or R Day June 29th Please have all adult passenger photo identification available upon approaching the security gate Any vehicle and its occupants entering the United States Coast Guard Academy are subject to random security searches by uniformed security officers There will be signage and uniformed personnel directing visitors to several reserved parking areas around base If these reserved parking areas are full there are several unreserved parking areas available but they are farther away from R Day activities We suggest parking your vehicle in one of the reserved parking areas upon arrival and walking around campus for the remainder of the day Transportation shuttles will be provided on base with priority seating for elderly and handicapped visitors or anyone wishing to avoid the hills and long distance walks Several lunch options are also available on base so there is no need to leave campus until the end of R Day Please drive safely Connecticut state law prohibits the use of cellular phones while driving and seat belt use is mandatory
