    Travel and Planning Forms and Downloads Staying in Touch Contact Us Frequently Asked Questions AIM Summer Program Application Process Cadet Life and Career Options Early Action Medical PFE Preparation for Non Seniors Standardized Tests Statistics Request More Information Congressional Staff Meet the Admissions Staff Physical Fitness Exam The Physical Fitness Exam PFE is a measure of your physical aptitude It consists of three elements worth a maximum score of 100 points each and must be administered in the following sequence Cadence Push Ups Audio file Two Minute Sit Ups 1 5 Mile Run A minimum score of 130 points is required for admission to the Academy A score form will be available for download when you apply to the Academy online You can download the PFE Instruction Manual to help you prepare now for the exam Please be aware that this is different from the Candidate Fitness Assessment CFA and must be completed separately If you would like advice on how to prepare physically for the Academy download the Physical Fitness Guide You should always consult your physician before starting a physical fitness program IMPORTANT The PFE will be administered during the first week of Swab Summer Cadets who fail

    Driving Directions AIM Summer Program What to Expect AIM Eligibility and Selection Application Tuition and Payment Travel and Planning Forms and Downloads Staying in Touch Contact Us Frequently Asked Questions AIM Summer Program Application Process Cadet Life and Career Options Early Action Medical PFE Preparation for Non Seniors Standardized Tests Statistics Request More Information Congressional Staff Meet the Admissions Staff DoDMERB Medical Exam The Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board DoDMERB determines the medical fitness of all applicants to the five United States federal service academies The names of applicants deemed competitive for an appointment to the Coast Guard Academy or one of our preparatory school programs will be provided to DoDMERB once they have completed the application process Within two weeks you will receive instructions from DoDMERB or their contractor Concorde Inc about how to schedule your medical examination Do not delay Schedule your physical exam immediately upon receipt of your scheduling information If your initial medical exam is not completed by March 15 or if you are not found qualified by May 15 your application may be withdrawn from further consideration You do not need to take a second medical exam if you have already taken one

    Payment Travel and Planning Forms and Downloads Staying in Touch Contact Us Frequently Asked Questions AIM Summer Program Application Process Cadet Life and Career Options Early Action Medical PFE Preparation for Non Seniors Standardized Tests Statistics Request More Information Congressional Staff Meet the Admissions Staff After the Exam After the initial exam your file will be reviewed at DoDMERB They will find you either Meet Standards are in a Remedial status or Do Not Meet Standards You can check your medical status on the DoDMERB website If you are in a Remedial status DoDMERB will request additional tests exams or information to answer any questions they have You should comply with any requests immediately After receiving your additional information DoDMERB will again review your file If you Do Not Meet Standards the Academy will automatically consider you for a waiver Do not send waiver requests to the Academy Waivers are granted on a limited basis and with the best interest of the Coast Guard in mind We will notify you of our waiver decision in writing as soon as the review process is complete New waiver cases are not normally considered after May 1 If you are injured or hospitalized

    Use of hearing aids Perforated eardrum within 120 days of physical exam Endocrine System and Metabolism History of goiter persistent hyperthyroidism thyroiditis hyperparathyroidism hypoparathyroidism or diabetes mellitus Extremities All anomalies in the number the form the proportion and the movements of the extremities that produce noticeable deformity or interfere with function Torn cartilage unstable ACL or PCL or surgical correction of any ligaments if unstable or symptomatic Chronic knee pain syndrome Flatfoot when accompanied by symptoms Use of rigid prescribed orthotics Any surgical procedure on any joint during the past six months Eyes and Vision Uncorrected visual acuity worse than 20 400 in either eye Vision not correctable to 20 20 in either eye Refractive error exceeding plus or minus 8 00 diopters spherical equivalent Astigmatism exceeding 3 00 diopters and anisometropia exceeding 3 5 diopters Refractive error corrected by orthokeratology kerato refractive PRK laser or any other corneal enhancement Genitourinary System Horseshoe kidney or absence of one kidney Atrophy or absence of both testicles Undescended testicle Active or difficult to treat genital herpes even if asymptomatic Bilateral kidney stones or single kidney stone with one year of the exam Head Scalp Face and Neck Abnormalities which interfere with wearing military equipment or are disfiguring Heart and Vascular System History of hypertension Valvular septal congenital or other defects Lungs and Chest History of pneumothorax within the past year if due to simple trauma or surgery or a history within the past three years if spontaneous Asthma including reactive airway disease exercise induced bronchospasm or asthmatic bronchitis reliably diagnosed and symptomatic after the 13th birthday is disqualifying Reliable diagnostic criteria may include any of the following elements Substantiated history of cough wheeze chest tightness and or shortness of breath which persists or recurs over a prolonged period of time generally more
