my hometown of Albuquerque New Mexico here at the Academy I ve been a desert dweller my entire life so living by the water this past year was a beautiful change of scenery I have loved the water for as long as I can remember I swam and played water polo back home and happily play both sports here at the Academy My family has a long history of service in the military but the only service academy experience comes from my uncle a 1980 graduate from West Point He had a lot of insight to share with me regarding the academies and encouraged me to apply for all of them Long story short I came across the Coast Guard Academy via google search and quickly realized that it was the place for me The CGA offered me a tightly knit Corps of Cadets an opportunity to pursue my major of Civil Engineering and a commission as an officer in an operationally diverse service I didn t know of any cadets at the Academy who were from my neck of the woods When applying to the Academy I only had contact with the swim coach who was recruiting me Other

  • Engelhardt Profile
My name is James Engelhardt and I am from Burke Virginia a town located right outside our nation s capital Growing up in the Washington D C metropolitan area it seemed that everyone s family had military connections and mine was no exception Despite his retirement soon after my birth I learned a lot about service to the nation from my father who graduated from the U S Naval Academy Additionally as a result of not living far from Annapolis where the Naval Academy is located I visited that campus frequently for football games and other festivities In fact early on I thought that was where I wanted to go to college and upon graduation serve in our nation s other seagoing service However I learned about the Coast Guard Academy from a family friend who invited us to visit the Academy s grounds Admittedly after visiting the CGA during my freshman year in high school I fell in love with the beautiful campus as well as the Coast Guard s more humanitarian mission I applied to the Academy my senior year in high school and fortunately was accepted I can t say that at any point I have regretted

Townshend Hirst Virginia Beach VA Class of 2016 Major Operations Research and Computer Analysis ABOUT TOWNSHEND Future Shipmate Growing up with Navy jets overhead day and night it was inevitable for me to have dreams of being a pilot Never did I truly follow through with those dreams until the beginning of high school Come sophomore year I was set on attending a federal service academy The opportunities the academies offer cannot compare to a civilian school and I wanted those opportunities More importantly my dreams of flying were revived as I realized there was a chance of pursuing a career in aviation As senior year of high school rolled around I had no idea what to do Navy Air Force and Coast Guard all seemed like excellent options but a potential 9 year commitment How was I supposed to choose After months of wrestling in thought Coast Guard filled the slot I researched the services mostly by talking to their members and everyone in the Coast Guard constantly praised the service The humanitarian mission of the Coast Guard also appealed to me I d much rather be saving lives than dropping bombs So that s why I am here

is Melissa Keeley and I am a fourth class here at the Academy I came here as a mechanical engineer but am not fully decided From West Hartford Connecticut I am a local with a beach house in Charlestown Rhode Island as well Living close I get to see my parents almost every weekend I lucked out in this aspect I guess the next topic should be why I decided to come to the Academy For me this is extremely difficult to explain because I am still trying to put my thoughts together I cannot even remember when I first found out about the Coast Guard Academy My parents definitely had a role in introducing me to it and urging me to go here However I have no doubt in my mind that the final decision was mine I know many cadets who have admirable reasons that they can state within a few sentences My favorite so far has been that of my cadre from Swab Summer This 2 c said he came here to save at least one life Whenever he becomes stressed or frustrated with this institution he thinks of that one life I cannot articulate my reason in a sentence or even a paragraph I would say I enjoy the structured and disciplined environment but I don t want you to think that this place is always locked on and rigid It has its ups and downs I believe that the fewer privileges we have the more we enjoy and appreciate those we do have I cannot wait until we are finally allowed to walk around Chase Hall in flip flops or listen to music out loud or even simply walk on the sidewalk during the day I have come to appreciate what I have both in
