    Operations Research and Computer Analysis ABOUT LUKE Hello My name is Luke Carani and I was born and raised in Gilberts Illinois Growing up in the Midwest my knowledge of the Coast Guard was unfortunately limited and it wasn t until August of my senior year of high school that I even considered applying to the USCGA But now here I am Sitting at the Academy writing blog articles and hopefully helping to answer any questions for those of you in whose shoes I was standing not so long ago In high school I played basketball and soccer and I was also involved in the school musicals although I can t sing at all I love to play sports work out read hang out with friends bake and cook and I m always willing and open to try new things I love listening to music as well and some of my favorite bands artists are The Classic Crime Billy Joel Taylor Swift and anything country I can t play any instruments but I would love to someday learn the piano Here at the Academy I row on the crew team and it is an experience like nothing else The guys

    My name is Samantha Cardoza but everyone just calls me Sam I was born and raised in beautiful San Diego California where my parents and two younger brothers still live So a little background on my family my mom is a first grade teacher my dad is a psychiatric nurse that works with the police and my two younger brothers are in 7th and 9th grade Now a little about me I am a huge reader You will never see me without a book either in my hands or in my backpack I also love to do things outdoors Running doing sports or just being outside in general definitely makes my day whenever I get the chance to do it Now for the Academy This is actually my third year being involved in something at the Academy In 2009 I attended AIM Academy Introduction Mission which was a blast I absolutely loved it Even though it was only a week it really gave me a great perspective on the Academy and how everything functions here In 2010 I was accepted into the Academy and attended Swab Summer It was a huge wake up call for me and was a fantastic learning experience I was medically disqualified six weeks into the summer and was sent home I re applied and was re accepted I am now a part of the class of 2015 and I am honored to say that I am In high school I was a swimmer and water polo player and was involved in many clubs and organizations Here at CGA I am in rugby and water polo I am also involved in swing dance Fellowship of Christian Athletes FCA Officers of Christian Fellowship OCF protestant choir and sometimes the worship team Vespers and a bible study off

    January 2013 December 2012 November 2012 October 2012 September 2012 August 2012 July 2012 June 2012 May 2012 April 2012 March 2012 February 2012 January 2012 December 2011 November 2011 October 2011 Cadet Profile Alexis Chavarria Aguilar Chattanooga TN Class of 2015 Major Civil Engineering ABOUT ALEXIS Hey folks My name is Alexis Chavarria Aguilar Yes I know what you re thinking but not to worry A lot of people struggle with the pronunciation of my last name and have compromised by simply calling me Chav I was born in Georgia but grew up in Chattanooga Tennessee playing soccer and rowing crew throughout high school Both of my parents work in healthcare which influenced me to pursue a career that also involves helping others Motivated by a passion for aviation I volunteered at an air medical transportation service where I met a former Coast Guard HH 65 pilot He advised me to look into the Coast Guard Academy as a possible strategy to flight school After some research I was hooked devoting the rest of my time in high school to earning an appointment Despite my valiant efforts I did not receive a direct appointment into the Academy and was instead offered a scholarship through the Coast Guard Academy Scholars Program I accepted and subsequently spent two semesters at Marion Military Institute in Alabama Not only did my experience at prep school strengthen my zeal for the Academy but it also presented me with a variety of exceptional memories including an opportunity to take private flight lessons Eventually I commenced from MMI with a quality GPA roughly 25 flight hours under my belt and an appointment to the CGA with the class of 2015 Nowadays I spend the majority of my time navigating through an endless sea of work shooting

    miles south of Chicago I play volleyball at the Academy and I am a senior this year I listen to all sorts of music and enjoy painting in my free time I just started last year and it is a way for me to clear my mind My blog isn t for the ordinary perspective cadet It is for the people out there who don t know if they have what it takes My road to the Academy is different than most since it was the only college I applied to I tore my ACL right before my senior year of high school so I thought I was going to have to settle for community college I didn t have a college fund so volleyball was supposed to be my ticket However it had just tore and disintegrated with my ACL In the rest of my blog I hope to inspire those who have self doubt I want to share my journey of loss and growth and hopefully someone will get the courage they need to at least apply to the Academy or to college in general I didn t believe I would even get accepted into the Academy or

    2012 Winter Wonderland What Sets Us Apart December 2011 November 2011 Getting Run Over by a Truck Almost Thanksgiving October 2011 R Day 2011 The Worst Sound Reveille Homecoming Weekend 2011 Cadet Profile Peter Driscoll New Bern NC Class of 2015 Major Government ABOUT PETER Hey I m Peter Driscoll from New Bern North Carolina I am the oldest of six children My mom and dad are both Navy officers one is a retired SAR helicopter pilot and the other is an engineer turned doctor We ve moved several times Pennsylvania the Washington D C metropolitan area the Florida Panhandle and eastern North Carolina Go Tar Heels In high school I was a straight A student I was the varsity swim team captain and active in my parish and school clubs When I came to the Academy instead of swimming I chose crew I am the novice coxswain for the men s team Sometimes it sucks but sometimes it s lucky to be the smallest guy in a group I also participate in Mock Trial and the Catholic Club but I don t want to overbalance academics and extracurriculars Speaking of academics I am a tentative Government major who is considering whether or not to switch to Marine and Environmental Science I would love to double major but that is almost impossible here No matter what happens when I graduate whether first in the class or last I will still become an Ensign Which leads me to my last point unless you ve already hit the Back button on your browser I chose the Academy because I wanted to actively help people not sit behind a desk The leadership opportunities available to graduates make every second here worth it my goal is to gain promotion to Flag level while serving
