    Civil Engineering ABOUT KODY Aloha I am Kody Kekoa and I hail from the great state of Hawaii I have the best parents and a younger sister Kiana 17 who is wrapping up her final year of high school Throughout high school I was set on going to a massive Division I college I had visions of having a lifestyle similar to National Lampoon s Animal House However when I reached my senior year the reality of college set my thought process back to square one I had no idea what I was going to do Paying for college on the mainland United States was going to burn an eternal hole in my pocket but I told myself that I was going to travel the world therefore I was not going to attend college in Hawaii I proceeded to apply for different colleges including the Coast Guard Academy I was offered the Coast Guard Academy Scholars Program Throughout the acceptance process I always envisioned what I would be doing in 20 years had I gone to a civilian college versus the Academy Ultimately I felt that the Coast Guard path was going to be an adventure that the other options

    S LATEST ENTRIES March 2014 February 2014 January 2014 March 2013 February 2013 January 2013 November 2012 October 2012 Cadet Profile Alex Kloo Manasquan NJ Class of 2015 Major Marine and Environmental Sciences ABOUT ALEX My name is Alex Kloo and I am from Manasquan New Jersey I went to a magnet high school on Sandy Hook called the Marine Academy of Science and Technology where I participated in NJROTC scuba club and the National Ocean Sciences Bowl I first heard about the Coast Guard Academy because it is a popular choice at my school I am a Marine Environmental Sciences major with a focus on Chemistry and undecided between a second focus on Physical Oceanography or Biology I have always had an interest in science and the MES major is a great fit As for athletics I row for the CGA crew team I had never rowed before but now this is one of my favorite parts of life here I enjoy rowing because it pushes you both mentally and physically It is a fantastic sport and something I plan to do long into the future Overall I find the Coast Guard Academy to be an incredibly rewarding and

    July 2012 May 2012 April 2012 March 2012 February 2012 January 2012 December 2011 November 2011 October 2011 Cadet Profile Samuel Krakower Lumberton NJ Class of 2015 Major Government ABOUT SAMUEL Never start anything off with a quote My high school AP Government teacher told me that when I started writing my essays for application to the USCGA I should definitely do no such thing It s only fair to give him some credit because I am here after all Welcome aboard I am Sam Krakower a cadet who absolutely loves the path that the Coast Guard Academy has taken me on so far If you have any questions my email is Samuel Krakower uscga edu so don t hesitate to ask me anything I ll get back to you in at most 24 hours Now let s see what I can tell you about myself I m from good ol New Jersey South Jersey let s make that clear I have absolutely no connection to the Coast Guard prior to my coming here and I can tell you this place is great I m actually very lucky to be here though I got my appointment in December 2010 I became medically disqualified not just from the Coast Guard but all branches of service That made me lose my NROTC AFROTC and U S Air Force Academy Appointments as well as my CGA one However after a long battle I was able to get a waiver to come here even though all other services said the decision was final I am eternally grateful for that I honestly can say this was the perfect college for me Everything about this place is just amazing its tradition the history drilling the sports extracurriculars it s all great I play lacrosse here as

    Major Government ABOUT JON Hello readers My name is Jon Lash You may have already guessed it but I go the Coast Guard Academy I grew up in a military family my Dad served a career in the Army which constituted moving around every three years or so I was born in Rennes France and from there lived in Germany Fort Irwin California Midlothian Virginia and Gainesville Virginia I graduated from Battlefield High School where I enjoyed playing saxophone being the drum major of the marching band attempting to pole vault and simply just being a high school kid If there s one thing I ve learned from attending the Academy it is that you can always try something new and if you work hard you will succeed at it I run cross country and distance in track I never ran distance in high school but I decided to try it at the Academy I find myself excelling on the team alongside my good friends and I can t wait to see how we improve every season As for outside of sports and school I love playing the guitar ukulele and alto saxophone I also love listening to all different

    or the wonders of life as a 4 c cadet please feel free to email me at Jessica D Lukasik uscga edu I d be more than happy to give you whatever info or insights I can I spent the entire first 18 years of my life living in the Deep South just waiting to get out It s not that there was anything wrong with life in Georgia On the contrary I was thoroughly enjoying myself in high school I ve always kept insanely busy with violin swimming academics yeah I m that turbo nerd triathlons and musical theater and most recently rugby I love to bake bask in the sun shop till I drop and write short stories when I m not otherwise occupied But the same personality trait that allowed me to have so much fun back home the drive to be totally hyperactive also made me feel a little restless stuck in the Atlanta suburbs I wanted to see the world I wanted to have a job a significant job I wanted to be somewhere where I d forever and always have the opportunity to try new exciting challenging things How lucky I was to find the Coast Guard Academy It s a little bit baffling how I ended up here at the CGA I spent most of my Junior year in high school looking into Ivies for college I d never had any intention of joining the military and quite frankly I knew next to nothing about the Coast Guard and absolutely nothing about the Academy I found it almost by accident you never know where a Google search will lead you but I was intrigued I came to the Academy toured as a bean sprout and I was hooked The energy the enthusiasm the

    2011 Parent s Weekend What Is A Fourth Class Cadet Cadet Profile Matthew Martin Phoenix AZ Class of 2015 Major Marine and Environmental Sciences ABOUT MATT Hi all my name is Matt Martin and I am a 3 c cadet here at the Academy I am majoring in Marine and Environmental Sciences and am a member of numerous fun clubs like Jewish Club Kayak Club Compañeros Club and quite a few others I went to Mountain View High School a public school in a suburb of Phoenix I was a state champion basketball player and loved doing community service with my church and my school I have a older brother and an older sister and I am the first to join the military I had read all of these blogs when I was checking out colleges and they were a real help for me in deciding to come here I also came to visit during the Spring Break of my junior year That got me interested enough to apply for the AIM program which I was accepted for and that was my next visit that summer AIM was a huge factor in why I chose the Academy and I strongly recommend it for those interested After all that I was still not sure I wanted to join a military service and wasn t sure whether it was worth all the hard work It came down to the wire until it just made sense the Academy was right for me I wanted a top notch education a small school the ability to stay in shape the leadership development and the unbelievable opportunities cadets receive here Most importantly I wanted to do something different I wanted to be challenged I wanted to make something of myself and the Academy was the best
