    CONTACT INFORMATION Dr Karen Wink U S Coast Guard Academy Humanities Department dh 27 Mohegan Avenue Satterlee 236 New London CT 06320 Karen A Wink uscga edu 860 444 8348 Dr Karen Wink Associate Professor of English Humanities Department U S Coast Guard Academy USCGA Associate English Professor Karen Wink has been an educator in secondary college and corporate settings for more than 20 years Ms Wink began her career in 1985 as an English and speech teacher at Crestwood High School in Mantua Ohio In 1986 she left public school teaching temporarily to become the Director of the Sylvan Learning Center in Middleburg Heights Ohio and concurrently pursued a Masters degree in Reading Education at Baldwin Wallace College In 199O with a new degree in hand Ms Wink was promoted to Corporate Educational Trainer and Program Manager at Sylvan Learning Systems first in Montgomery Alabama then in Baltimore Maryland where she worked until 1993 At this time she enrolled in the University of Maryland full time to pursue her Ph D During her graduate studies Ms Wink at different times assumed a graduate assistantship in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction returned to secondary teaching English 9 11th grades in the Howard County school system in Columbia Maryland and served as an adjunct Freshmen English instructor at the University of Maryland In 1999 she earned her Ph D in English Education with an emphasis on rhetoric and composition Following she has assumed the roles of the Director of the Reading Program for three years and an English professor for nine years at the Academy Her central duties have been teaching advising tutoring and serving on committees as well as speaking at conferences professional writing and reviewing journal manuscripts Education Ph D English Education magna cum laude University of Maryland

    860 444 8334 Alina M Zapalska Professor Department of Management U S Coast Guard Academy Dr Alina Zapalska is a Professor of Economics Director of the USCGA Honors Program and an advisor to Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society Professor Zapalska s extensive and varied teaching experience spans 30 years in the U S and abroad She has presented numerous academic papers at professional conferences has published more than 200 articles in professional refereed journals several book chapters monographs research projects and papers and conference proceedings Her primary teaching and research interests are in the areas of Macroeconomics Experimental Economics Micro entrepreneurship International Business International Trade and Finance and Transitional Economies and Pedagogy Her international work and study experience has enabled her research to be focused on analyzing economies of Poland Hungary Czech Republic Thailand China New Zealand Sweden U S Australia Bangladesh and South Korea Professor Zapalska has been an active president member and chairperson of many national and international academic organizations In 1998 she was a consulting professor at Auckland University of Technology AUT Auckland New Zealand that resulted in establishment of the Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies at AUT Later due to her success in consulting and joint research during a sabbatical in 2000 she was appointed Adjunct Professor of Economics at Auckland University of Technology prior to her work at the CGA During her eleven years at USCGA she coordinates the American Service Academies Program The primary purpose of this program is to educate inspire and empower future leaders in the U S Coast Guard with a clear understanding of the Holocaust The program focuses on the Holocaust and related contemporary moral and ethical dilemmas and provides an authentic learning experience for future military officers extending beyond what they are taught in the classroom Participants are expected to become ambassadors of ethical behavior and take full responsibility to translate their understanding and knowledge of the Holocaust to their peers because of their close examination of this historical atrocity Being of Polish origin she felt honored to be able to develop and run this program and provide this great experience to the cadets Professor Zapalska also coordinates the Saratoga Fellowship Program a post graduate fellowship opportunity for junior officers in the U S Coast Guard and the Armed Forces of the United States The program has been founded and organized by the John Jay Institute in Philadelphia Pennsylvania In 2005 Professor Zapalska developed the U SCGA International Ballroom Dance Club IBDC that provides the opportunity for cadets to develop social dancing skills and to compete in dance sport competition The IBDC has been extremely successful in creating diversity and expanding the moral ethical and intellectual dimensions of the academic military and athletic program at the Academy With the assistance of the IBDC Professor Zapalska also organizes the CGA ballroom dance lessons for the CGA staff and faculty as well as the Community dances where the local community enjoys group dance lessons and dancing with the CGA cadets Professor Zapalska

    Academic Advisory Board Cadet Academic Assistance Program Writing and Reading Center HWRC International Council Peer Tutor Program Honors USCGA Scholars Honors Internships National Honor Societies Saratoga Fellowship USCGA Annual Ethics Forum Center for Advanced Studies About Lunchtime Seminar Series Excellence in Scholarship Awards Summer Fellowship Reports CONTACT INFORMATION Dr Sharon Zelmanowitz U S Coast Guard Academy Engineering Department dec 15 Mohegan Avenue New London CT 06320 Sharon Zelmanowitz uscga edu 860 444 8550 Sharon Zelmanowitz Ph D P E Civil Engineering Professor and Section Chief Engineering Department U S Coast Guard Academy Dr Zelmanowitz graduated from Cornell in 1983 with a B S in Agricultural Engineering and from N C State University with an M S in Biological and Agricultural Engineering in 1986 After earning her Masters Dr Zelmanowitz worked as an environmental engineer at Alliance Technologies in Chapel Hill North Carolina At Alliance she engaged in a wide variety of projects for the EPA including developing emissions inventories for the acid precipitation database and updating hazardous waste databases She left Alliance to attend the University of Wisconsin Madison and earned a Ph D in Civil and Environmental Engineering in August 1991 Her dissertation work involved studying the fate of acidic leachates and heavy metals in soils beneath coal storage piles In August 1991 Dr Zelmanowitz took a teaching position in Civil Engineering at the U S Coast Guard Academy and is presently a full professor section chief and coordinator of environmental engineering for the major She engages cadets in Coast Guard research and consulting work such as development of shipboard wastewater systems and evaluation improvement of storm water systems at CGA Dr Zelmanowitz maintains an active relationship with local water and wastewater plants which has led to academically enriching service based class projects Education Ph D Civil and Environmental
