    Engineering Faculty Humanities Faculty Management Faculty Mathematics Faculty Science Faculty Professional Maritime Studies Faculty Library Registrar Academic Support Services Academic Advising Fourth Class Academic Orientation Cadet Academic Advisory Board Cadet Academic Assistance Program Writing and Reading Center HWRC International Council Peer Tutor Program Honors USCGA Scholars Honors Internships National Honor Societies Saratoga Fellowship USCGA Annual Ethics Forum Center for Advanced Studies About Lunchtime Seminar Series Excellence in Scholarship Awards Summer Fellowship Reports LTJG JOE DIRENZO IV Ltjg Joe DiRenzo IV Granted the Fulbright Fellowship A 2010 graduate of the U S Coast Guard Academy LTJG DiRenzo was granted a Fulbright Scholarship to study sustainable energy engineering in Norway during academic year 2012 2013 LTJG Joe DiRenzo IV of Suffolk Virginia was granted the scholarship and will pursue a master s degree in innovative and sustainable energy engineering from the Norwegian Technical University NTNU with a concentration in renewable energy generation and utilization DiRenzo is currently serving as the first lieutenant aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Vigilant a 210 foot medium endurance cutter homeported in Port Canaveral Florida DiRenzo selected the ISEE program because of its research oriented curriculum with real world applications which he hopes will enhance renewable energy initiatives within the Coast Guard During his time at NTNU DiRenzo will also study at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden where he will focus on using sustainable energy systems for shipboard components as well as studying the feasibility of implementing sustainable energy into the Coast Guard s cutter fleet Norway and Sweden have integrated modern forms of renewable energy into many aspects of industry and daily living Sweden is attempting to become the first oil free economy by replacing fossil fuel with bio fuel Like the United States Norway and Sweden are maritime nations and have developed renewable energy

    Excellence in Scholarship Awards Summer Fellowship Reports 1 C JOE DIRENZO IV 1 c Joe DiRenzo IV Granted the Fulbright Fellowship 1 c Joe DiRenzo IV of Suffolk Virginia has been granted the Fulbright Scholarship for the academic year 2010 11 The Icelandic Fulbright Commission offered him a Fulbright Fellowship to pursue his Master s degree in Renewable Energy Science RES with a concentration on fuel cell systems and hydrogen technology He will arrive in Iceland after serving aboard USCGC Vigilant homeported in Cape Canaveral Florida Joe selected this RES program as it offers a research oriented curriculum on renewable energy in cooperation with the University of Iceland and University of Akureyni and in partnership with other leading universities around the world These research opportunities are especially relevant for the U S Coast Guard because of the specialization in infrastructure for the transportation sector marine transportation and hybrid propulsion systems As part of his graduate studies Joe is planning to research the feasibility of introducing hydrogen fuel cells to power certain electrical systems onboard Coast Guard vessels Joe chose to study in Iceland as 73 of Iceland s primary energy comes from indigenous renewable energy sources which is the highest of any country in the world Iceland has integrated all the modern forms of renewable energy into daily living It is the forerunner in modernizing the use of energy through programs like electric cars buses and ships powered by hydrogen In addition Iceland like the United States is a maritime nation and has developed renewable energy science for application in the maritime environment While undertaking research on integrating hydrogen fuel cells into U S Coast Guard vessels Joe wants to observe projects where hydrogen fuel cells are being integrated into the Icelandic fishing fleet Immediately after completing his studies in
