    February 2013 January 2013 December 2012 November 2012 October 2012 September 2012 August 2012 July 2012 June 2012 May 2012 April 2012 March 2012 February 2012 November 2011 cadet blogs Time Moves Faster Now Academics Athletics Class of 2018 Permanent link All Posts Hi everybody I ll start off by saying that my email is Cody L Williamson uscga edu and anyone can contact me if you have questions So the month of September as has come and gone and I ve been in school for the same amount of time as Swab Summer Comparing the two time moves much faster now The days themselves feel long but all of a sudden it s Friday and you ask yourself were the week went My classes are going well I have pretty much found my groove Homework is the biggest issue when it comes to time and stress The classes themselves are not bad but at the end of the day when all I want to do is sleep is when this place feels harder than your average college Having all my classmates around and seeing them going through the same struggles helps me stay motivated An old retired Coast Guard veteran once said something that stuck with me through the admission process Swab Summer and now If the guy next to your is doing it and thousands of guys before you did it then you sure can do it you are strong enough to finish so don t let anyone tell you otherwise Right now I am in the middle of the sailing season I have never sailed before and the first time I set foot on a sail boat was Swab Summer However in a few short months I have pretty much learned all the basics to sailing a

    2013 April 2013 March 2013 February 2013 January 2013 December 2012 November 2012 October 2012 September 2012 August 2012 July 2012 June 2012 May 2012 April 2012 March 2012 February 2012 November 2011 cadet blogs The Unbelievable Summer The Cadet Experience Class of 2017 Permanent link All Posts We re all finally back at the Academy and I can t believe how many different experiences my classmates had over the summer Returning as 3 c is exciting but not nearly as great as the summer that s quickly coming to a close For the first five weeks of the summer I served on the Coast Guard Cutter William Flores a fast response cutter stationed in Miami Florida In the three weeks we were underway we took on quite a few Cuban migrants and helped transfer 1 800 lbs of illegal drugs I qualified as Quartermaster of the Watch QMOW and Alien Migrant Watchstander and was included in the duty rotation just like any other crew member It was motivating to really feel like I had a noticeable impact and was on the front lines of many Coast Guard missions One specific sea story I ll share takes place off the coast of central Florida one morning around 8 30 I was standing QMOW and the commanding officer was the only other person on the bridge with me steering and navigating the cutter It was a calm day and there wasn t much radio traffic until Sector started alerting us of two small rafts near the coast full of illegal migrants I sprang into action plotting the point relayed by Sector that designated the location of the rafts and advised the CO on course and speed to arrive at the location As great as getting qualified was it was even more

    September 2013 August 2013 July 2013 June 2013 May 2013 April 2013 March 2013 February 2013 January 2013 December 2012 November 2012 October 2012 September 2012 August 2012 July 2012 June 2012 May 2012 April 2012 March 2012 February 2012 November 2011 cadet blogs Class is my Extracurricular Activity Athletics Extracurricular Activities and Faith Based Involvement Class of 2017 Permanent link All Posts Over the past couple of weeks I ve had quite a few opportunities to participate in different activities offered by clubs and sports Between Sustainability Club the Spectrum Council and crew every week has something or somethings to keep me excited Most recently representatives from the food co operative in town Fiddleheads came to speak with the Sustainability Club and brought snacks We were all fascinated by the co operative business model and the entrepreneurial spirit of those who started Fiddleheads Without this small grocer it could be difficult to find unquestionably healthy foods in the area Fiddleheads also strives to keep local items on the shelves a much easier task in the summer but still attainable year round I ve volunteered there in the past and really like the connection to the community I gain by interacting with the store s patrons Also recently the Spectrum Council hosted a panel of gay and transgender service members active and retired enlisted and officers It is so exciting to be a member of the military during this time of transition following the repeal of Don t Ask Don t Tell and being able to openly attend such a panel and see how many proud supporters exist is truly inspiring A common theme brought up was how the panel felt they were being treated by their peers and subordinates and how they deal with insensitive but culturally popular remarks

    2015 June 2015 May 2015 April 2015 March 2015 February 2015 January 2015 December 2014 November 2014 October 2014 September 2014 August 2014 July 2014 June 2014 May 2014 April 2014 March 2014 February 2014 January 2014 December 2013 November 2013 October 2013 September 2013 August 2013 July 2013 June 2013 May 2013 April 2013 March 2013 February 2013 January 2013 December 2012 November 2012 October 2012 September 2012 August 2012 July 2012 June 2012 May 2012 April 2012 March 2012 February 2012 November 2011 cadet blogs What Makes the Corps Great Choosing the Coast Guard Academy Class of 2017 Permanent link All Posts They don t call the first half of spring semester The Dark Ages for nothing Between snow rain and my personal favorite ice pellets constantly falling and below freezing temperatures there isn t much to look forward to each day This week we switched back to short sleeved uniforms and while the ice storm yesterday made this seem premature the bright sunshine sparkling on the Thames and temperatures expected to soar to 50 degrees have everyone smiling In the depths of the Dark Ages though there were still small things to keep us all going The Hedrick Fellow and the Ethics Forum were just a few weeks ago where we heard from some amazing speakers like Justice Antonin Scalia and Mr Paul Bucha Medal of Honor recipient While most college students spend their evenings managing their time however they please we all rushed from class to practice to dinner then back into uniform for these presenters and we were not disappointed Following their presentations I had many conversations with my shipmates about their presentations all of us were engaged and thinking about what they had to say A few people commented at how silently 900 cadets
