  • The Road Ahead - Corbett August 2015
of 2017 Permanent link All Posts It has been a while everyone but as always better late than never After watching my cadre class receive their billets go through Capstone assignments and finally graduate it has me thinking about legacy what each member of 2015 left behind or who they left behind Sure there were athletic stars superior students and those in command positions all of whom came and went but those are factual leave behinds What truly should matter when you leave this great paradise is that you offered what you could to those under you With that mentality here I sit as a 2 c I now have been through cadre summer and have seen the other side of the field the grass is greener by the way More importantly we as the Class of 2017 are to carry on 2015 s legacy through our swab class It is just the way the mentorship here works odd years train odd years and even years train even years Legacy family and team are my themes coming into this year I figured I would just give a blurb on what I hope is the mentality shared by the Class of 2017 Legacy 2015 was a great class They trained us and of course I am biased in saying that we are a great class because of them The lessons they taught us are those which I hope to carry through to 2019 and years to follow They taught us simple things such as how to have fun in a place like this Smiling does not have to be a rare occurrence it is a choice to be happy or sad not a force When we had to go to a mandatory sporting event 2015 showed up ready to have fun

  • And We’re Back! - Corbett January 2015
interim winter break This time of year can be bleak as the days grow short I notice this mainly because I hear the sound of evening colors from my room go off sooner and sooner with each passing day These darkening days can cause bleakness among the corps due to the latter mentioned darkness in addition with the bitterness of the winter air But there is a light You see a revelation has happened here at the Academy Upon returning the class of 2017 my class is faced with looking ahead We are already being trained for and talked to about the impending summer which is supposedly our most important summer so I am told I guess this makes sense as this summer we are no longer under class but just not upper class We are thrown into the fire and allowed to orchestrate out a leadership style of our own to be implemented on the incoming class Now the question rests on my mind how do I lead the incoming class Until now I haven t given leadership much thought I more or less just do rather than stop and talk about the what and why of my doings Lately however I have come to a keen understanding that developing my leadership is important to not only this summer but to myself I owe it to myself to take the time to really learn the what and why That way when I first lay eyes on the swabs I will know exactly how to handle them With that I have started developing a leadership philosophy so let me know if I have gone off the tracks here Through my own experience observations and readings this is the down and dirty of what I believe My two cents if you

2012 May 2012 April 2012 March 2012 February 2012 November 2011 cadet blogs In a Flash The Cadet Experience Class of 2017 Permanent link All Posts Last year upperclassmen said it all the time Trust me after 4 c year this place flies by Here I sit with midterms behind me and Thanksgiving staring me down I remember being in Swab Summer thinking it was the longest seven weeks of my life and now life is a steady stream flowing day to day So what have I learned thus far in the semester Other than all the crazy electrical engineering knowledge that is being crammed in my brain there have been a few Academy lessons Like I said this semester has flown by After all time stops for no man Sometimes people become so busy and caught up in life you forget to just breathe and take in your surroundings Looking around the Academy and across the Thames all the trees have changed to their fall wardrobe of oranges yellows and reds Which if you have never been to the Academy or New England is truly breathtaking Taking in the small moments is difficult but necessary to stay sane If you don t stay caught up in work you will just become overloaded frustrated and stressed I try to keep stress out as much as possible Being a 3 c is very different from being a 4 c For obvious reasons such as not having to square not having to take out trash etc Bigger than that however the respect that comes with the new title is relieving 4 c look to you for advice for help and as someone who is above them who has the wisdom of a year under their belt which is true 3 c are

  • Returning Home - Corbett August 2014
Class of 2017 Permanent link All Posts It was a long 142 days to be away from home Then again I am only from Philly so I don t have much room to talk as there are cadets from Alaska and other faraway lands As I ventured out this summer I kept track of what I needed to do to finally arrive home I started my journey in Milwaukee A small station but a great station I drove 45 foot and 25 foot boats that could zoom through the water and slice through waves at speeds upwards of 50 mph 45 knots for those who are nautical I saved a life I lifeguarded for four years in high school and had pulled struggling swimmers to the side but this was different A man s life depended on the training I had The wealth of knowledge one could accumulate in a whole year being in the Coast Guard I sat in the radio room and answered the call and I sent out our boats with our crew Everyone knew their position and there I was the rookie calm collected and managing the pickup of a 52 year old man who fell into the Milwaukee river system I did my job and a man s life was saved I was pepper sprayed yes military grade pepper sprayed voluntarily Probably one of the worst experiences of my life but it was something that needed to be done There is oh so little room to expand on all stories so I will leave this one to another day I left the station in high spirits and boarded the CGC Eagle I knew Eagle was the last part of my trip I sailed from Miami through awful weather long midnight watches and trainings on trainings
