    April 2013 March 2013 February 2013 January 2013 December 2012 November 2012 October 2012 September 2012 August 2012 July 2012 June 2012 May 2012 April 2012 March 2012 February 2012 November 2011 cadet blogs Prep Program Cadre Worth Waiting For Choosing the Coast Guard Academy The Cadet Experience Class of 2017 Permanent link All Posts This summer by far has been the most impactful experience I have had at the Coast Guard Academy so far The two most rewarding programs I was able to be a part of were first the training of the incoming cadet candidates for the Coast Guard Academy Scholars CGAS program and then the Marine Safety Training Program The CGAS program sends students with high potential to preparatory school in either Georgia Military College or Marion Military Institute I myself went through the prep program and can say it was one of the best years of my life I met great people and got pumped to join the United States Coast Guard Speaking of great people I actually met one of my best friends through the prep program Ivonne Lassalle from Puerto Rico prepped with me in 2012 We became roommates and soon thereafter best friends We have been planning our quad speeches since August 9 2012 for when we would one day be CGAS cadre Our silly dreams turned into an incredible reality when this summer we were able to stand side by side as cadre Going through the journey from cadet candidate to 2 c cadet and training the future of our Coast Guard was amazing to me I also could not have even begun this journey without the various mentors I had through all these years I will never forget my cadre experience The Marine Safety Training Program was interesting in a different

    2014 November 2014 October 2014 September 2014 August 2014 July 2014 June 2014 May 2014 April 2014 March 2014 February 2014 January 2014 December 2013 November 2013 October 2013 September 2013 August 2013 July 2013 June 2013 May 2013 April 2013 March 2013 February 2013 January 2013 December 2012 November 2012 October 2012 September 2012 August 2012 July 2012 June 2012 May 2012 April 2012 March 2012 February 2012 November 2011 cadet blogs A Reflection on the Summer The Cadet Experience Class of 2017 Permanent link All Posts As I am packing into my new room in my new company I cannot help but be amazed by how fast time has gone by It feels like I had just begun my summer training I was on a fast response cutter FRC for the first five weeks of my training It was my first real taste of the operational Coast Guard and it was unforgettable I was given the opportunity to travel to new places like Puerto Rico Dominican Republic and St Lucia We worked hard to get our qualifications and made new friendships with the amazing crew of the CGC Charles Sexton The missions of the FRC include drug and migrant interdiction as well as search and rescue I was able to be a part of two drug chases and a rescue mission of a sinking cargo vessel Firsthand experience with the missions of the Coast Guard was a great way to apply what I have been learning at the Academy as well as to learn new skills After five weeks I parted ways with the Charles Sexton and headed off to spend six weeks on the CGC Eagle for more training I had a wonderful time on Eagle while I was there I learned valuable lessons from the crew

    June 2014 May 2014 April 2014 March 2014 February 2014 January 2014 December 2013 November 2013 October 2013 September 2013 August 2013 July 2013 June 2013 May 2013 April 2013 March 2013 February 2013 January 2013 December 2012 November 2012 October 2012 September 2012 August 2012 July 2012 June 2012 May 2012 April 2012 March 2012 February 2012 November 2011 cadet blogs Flying Through February Just for Fun The Cadet Experience Class of 2017 Permanent link All Posts This second semester has flown by faster than I could have expected January was a whirlwind but I was wishing for it to pass so I could get to the excitement of February The core began the month of February with a morale event on Super bowl Sunday called 101st night It is a morale event for the 2 c and 4 c to switch places for a day The 4 c earns the 2 c shoulder boards on 101st night It is also called 101st night because there are only 101 days left to go until graduation It was a great experience and it was one more obstacle accomplished to get the class of 2017 closer to carry on February also started the 4 c boards exams This is probably the most important military test that the class of 2017 has to take It is another obstacle before carry on and the test ensures that we are ready to join the fleet for the first time this coming summer I was able to pass my boards on the first try on February 11 I was so nervous going into the room but my 3rd class and shipmates helped me to prepare My roommate and I celebrated our passing by dancing around in our room to the Frozen soundtrack A privilege of

    July 2012 June 2012 May 2012 April 2012 March 2012 February 2012 November 2011 cadet blogs 1st Semester Finish Line Academics Overcoming Challenges Class of 2017 Permanent link All Posts There is only one day until Thanksgiving leave I am so grateful that I have made it this far A few landmarks made the month of November especially notable I had the privilege of marching in the Veterans Day parade in New York with Windjammers It was so wonderful to see the community getting together to celebrate the men and women who serve our country and I am very proud to be able to join them When you are at the Academy it is sometimes hard to see what your commitment means to the rest of the world By going to the Veterans Day parade I was able to see how supportive and appreciative everyone was that I took an oath on R Day to protect and serve the people and the Constitution There were also hundreds of other people from other branches of the military at the parade and I had the pleasure of talking to them In particular an Army sergeant with eight deployments and twenty four years of service stopped to talk with me and my fellow cadets about what it is like in the operational military and he also gave us invaluable advice from his experiences As if the weekend could not get any better we also performed the Windjammers show at the Giants stadium Eli Manning ran right past me during warm up and I thought of how awesome it was that I was on the same field It was also great performing in that huge arena with the seats full of onlookers Another notable moment of November was a Calculus test I took two
