    January 2014 December 2013 November 2013 October 2013 September 2013 August 2013 July 2013 June 2013 May 2013 April 2013 March 2013 February 2013 January 2013 December 2012 November 2012 October 2012 September 2012 August 2012 July 2012 June 2012 May 2012 April 2012 March 2012 February 2012 November 2011 cadet blogs A Lot to be Thankful For The Cadet Experience Class of 2016 Permanent link All Posts It sure is crazy to think that there is only one and a half weeks of classes left This semester has flown by It has been absolutely wonderful to be home for a bit of a break I am very thankful for the opportunity to take recruiting leave and leave the Academy on Friday instead of Tuesday Recruiting leave was offered this semester for cadets on the Superintendent s List This opportunity allowed me to talk to high school students from my area about the Academy All throughout high school I wanted to be one of the college students that came home and talked about their university This year I was able to take advantage of this and talk to students at three high schools It was my first time back to my high school and its was both exciting and kind of weird to see how some things have changed over the past year and a half I think the funniest part of the whole experience was a group of third graders at my school grades 2 12 that were completely baffled by who this lady me in uniform was Being at the Academy and in the New London area where everyone knows cadets I never realized the impact of wearing a uniform on the general public The third graders weren t scared of me but they definitely viewed me with

    2012 May 2012 April 2012 March 2012 February 2012 November 2011 cadet blogs My Families The Cadet Experience Class of 2016 Permanent link All Posts Over the past year I have realized how important family is I know that I could not be successful in life if it wasn t for my family I never realized how much I had to be thankful for and how much my family really meant to me until I went away for school It s crazy how you realize how much someone means to you when you don t see them every day Going to school more than a thousand miles away from home makes me appreciate every moment I get to spend with my family I know a lot of my friends went away for school thinking Yes I m free My parents are not my boss and now I m out on my own I can t imagine this My parents have only ever been supportive and I wouldn t be where I am today if it wasn t for my family They are always there pushing me to get better but helping me when I struggle I have realized over the last year just how lucky I am to have parents and a big sister that I am so close to I know whenever I am having a bad day my family will be there to talk no matter what time it is They help me get through everything I have learned to cherish every opportunity I get to go home because it is only a few times a year Being here has made me much more grateful for what I have My family doesn t stop at my parents and my sister The Academy is a place where you develop

    2012 May 2012 April 2012 March 2012 February 2012 November 2011 cadet blogs The Grind Academics Choosing the Coast Guard Academy Class of 2016 Permanent link All Posts A month ago I was home on leave enjoying the Florida sun with no obligations Boy what a difference a month makes Today I look outside my window to the drizzling grey New England sky and can only dream of going home in just over two months I think every time I come back to school it s exciting to see everyone for two maybe three days and then the routine sets in It s good I like routines I know what s expected that way But personally I like to be able to remember to breathe Some days I m not so sure that fits in here I think as cadets we all get into our routine and things just keep squeezing their way into any little hole of free time they can find I suppose this is why I am here because I like a challenge and I like being around other people who also like that Or maybe I just signed that line thinking in four years I will be flying helicopters in Florida or busting drug runners in the Caribbean Regardless here I am currently just trying to remember to breathe It is so obvious that you can t get through the Academy alone I ve known that My friends are always there for me as I am for them Regardless it s still stressful and it only gets more so over the years I never imagined the difference between the19 20 credit hours I had last year and the 23 I m taking this year It s easy to get buried with work and let it pile

    2013 May 2013 April 2013 March 2013 February 2013 January 2013 December 2012 November 2012 October 2012 September 2012 August 2012 July 2012 June 2012 May 2012 April 2012 March 2012 February 2012 November 2011 cadet blogs Just You and the Ocean Academics The Cadet Experience Class of 2016 Permanent link All Posts Hi everyone It s nearly the end of the first phase of my 3 c summer training program I was lucky enough to have a very unique experience by participating in the Academy s summer ocean racing program It has been by far one of the best experiences of my life and I have made so many memories The program is designed for both dinghy and offshore sailors at the Academy It is a six week training period geared at racing 44 foot sailboats Each year there is one long distance race that the program competes in where you are sailing out in the ocean by yourselves with a safety officer and a coach on board This year the team completed the Annapolis to Newport Race Here is an overview of my first experience ocean racing In four days on a boat I don t think we could have seen any new type of weather Sun rain hail big breeze no breeze we had it all All we were missing was the snow So go figure we made every single sail change possible And of course some things went more smoothly than others There were so many cool experiences that we had on the trip I said I wanted to see a whale and just a few hours later a whale was jumping off our starboard beam We saw lots of dolphins and a whole pod played in our wake for about a mile We watched a

    November 2011 cadet blogs We Made It Athletics Choosing the Coast Guard Academy Class of 2016 Permanent link All Posts Wow We really made it The class of 2016 really made it through 4 c year The seemingly endless year is over So you know some days you just get really nostalgic and reflective Well now that the school year has come and passed I have been doing that a lot This has been guaranteed the biggest year of my life in terms of change and we are about to be thrown into the real world for the summer A year ago I was getting ready for quite frankly a summer I wasn t looking forward to My world of sailing and going to school only when I wasn t traveling was nearing its end as I prepared to go to the CGA for Swab Summer I knew what I was getting into and I knew it was going to be worth it in the long run but I wasn t totally stoked about not going to normal college Now looking back I see that I was honestly just worried about not getting the same experience as my friends But that s not me and I wouldn t change this year for any of that The friends I ve made and my teammates are closer than I think you could get at any other college We have all been through so much together so many ridiculous things squaring yelling at inanimate objects and cleaning on Friday nights It s not always fun and I thought I would hate it but seeing the light at the end of the tunnel now puts everything in perspective It is the last day of class and I feel like I still don t even
