  • Certificate Programs Added | Columbia International University
    Certificate prepares students for effective life and work in Muslim contexts October 14 2014 Columbia International University has added two certificate programs designed to enhance the ministry of people serving in cross cultural environments and can be earned completely online The Intercultural Studies Certificate and the Muslim Studies Certificate can also be used as building blocks toward completing a Master of Arts degree The Intercultural Studies Certificate provides students with an essential understanding of the mission of God culture worldview and ethnography while the Muslim Studies Certificate prepares students for effective life and work in Muslim contexts Each certificate includes two required courses and two electives The two required courses in the Muslim Studies Certificate provide essential understanding of Muslim beliefs and practices as well as various forms of Christian witness The four courses in each certificate meet the basic requirements for a concentration and can be plugged in to other degree programs Both certificates can be earned completely online or as a combination of resident and online courses CIU Intercultural Studies professor Dr Ed Smither says he hopes students earning the certificates will gain the skills to understanding the mission of God from Scripture and to effectively minster across

  • Dr. David Osterlund Honored | Columbia International University
    A plaque will recognize him at the school s Totino Arts Center where he coordinated the design of the music wing I was profoundly gratified at this honor Osterlund said Of course over the years I have seen various plaques on the walls of the Totino Fine Arts Center It is a pleasure to be asked to join the club The honor recognizes Osterlund for not only his leadership at Northwestern but also for his music accomplishments at CIU and for his role in establishing the CIU Prison Initiative where he still actively serves as director emeritus The CIU Prison Initiative offers the opportunity for qualifying male and female inmates to earn Associate of Arts degrees before being disbursed throughout South Carolina s prison system to minister as chaplain s assistants Osterlund came to CIU as music chairman in 1989 and over the years directed choirs and bands taught a number of music courses and also developed a course called Christ the Creative process with the help of Christian recording artist Michael Card In March of 2004 Osterlund was planning to retire when the director of the South Carolina Department of Corrections contacted him to ask if he would consider

    Hobby Lobby a nationwide chain of craft stores wanted to protect its religious pro life convictions and not be forced to offer four specific contraceptives that cause abortions as mandated by federal law in the Affordable Care Act Representing Hobby Lobby was The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty in Washington D C where Blomberg serves as legal counsel The Becket Fund is a non profit public interest legal and educational institute with a mission to protect the free expression of all faiths Blomberg graduated from CIU in 2003 with a degree in Psychology and in 2008 from the University of South Carolina School of Law He is the featured speaker at the President s Lunch Oct 31 during Homecoming 2014 The lunch begins at 12 30 in the Moore Fitness Center The public is invited to the ticketed event In the premier edition of CIU s new magazine CIU Today to be published in October Blomberg talks about his involvement in the Hobby Lobby case Here is an excerpt from the Q A article Why was the Hobby Lobby case important to religious liberty For many reasons not least is because the government s position was so extreme If the government won then it could force business owners to violate their consciences in innumerable ways The most obvious example is the religious belief at issue in Hobby Lobby paying for employees abortion inducing drugs and devices But other examples abound including being forced to pay for surgical abortions as some states are already trying to do Without Hobby Lobby religious business owners would have been forced to either close their shops or violate their consciences with a resulting forced exodus of the devout from the marketplace How did CIU prepare you for constitutional litigation Very well First CIU built up

  • Blood Drive Big Success | Columbia International University
    CIU student Elizabeth Dews giving blood September 17 2014 By Emily Regan CIU Student Writer Columbia International University students came through in a big way for the American Red Cross and the community A goal of 31 donors was set for a September 15 blood drive That goal was exponentially exceeded an hour before the drive ever ended The student center quickly became a place where students anxiously gathered to either donate or to encourage their friends and professors who rolled up their sleeves CIU Dean Dr Bryan Beyer who is on the local board of the American Red Cross says the school has been sponsoring blood drives twice a year for at least the past 25 years As a Christian university it is important that we sponsor events like this so that we can be an example to the community Beyer said The blood drive was promoted on campus but also to the community on CIU radio station WMHK The student leadership really got involved this year and made this a great event Rick Swift dean of Student Life said The majority of the blood donated today came from our students And the CIU students indicated their desire to

    each based on the fact that believers in Christ are filled with God given treasure the Holy Spirit The moment you and I put our trust in Christ everything changed Schaeffer said The very God of the universe came to live in you and me Though all believers possess God s treasure Schaeffer said many Christians live without an awareness of the treasure in their daily lives Do we live like we know that the Spirit of God is with us right now Schaeffer challenged students The question is not Is He with us but Am I aware Do I live like He s there The Christian Life Conference concluded on Sept 11 with a Prayer Day in which classes were canceled Students and faculty were given time for corporate and individual prayer Scripture reading and teaching The College of Intercultural Studies faculty also led a time of prayer and remembrance for the Sept 11 terrorist attacks Students and faculty were asked to pray for people in the Middle East being persecuted by Islamic extremists for terrorists and for those who lost loves one in the Sept 11 attacks Nearly 3 000 people lost their lives each of them made

    test scores and the graduation rate areas that some parents and students use as a guide to choose a school CIU Provost Dr James Lanpher says the rise in the rankings reflects CIU s commitment to excellence and he specifically notes CIU s peer assessment score in the survey increased by about 15 percent The score is determined by a survey of presidents provosts and others at institutions in the South that are similar to CIU When this score goes up it means that others in the higher education community are having a higher opinion of us based on what our faculty produce and on CIU graduates that they know Lanpher said As high school students look for a college it s definitely to their benefit to choose a school that has a good and increasing reputation Lanpher says another contributing factor to CIU s ranking is retention and graduation rates U S News puts together several bits of data to come up with a predicted graduation rate and then they compare this to a school s actual graduation rate In CIU s case the actual graduation rate is significantly higher than the predicted rate This implies that students at

    store at Columbia International University underwent a major upgrade new lights and floors new clothing and food options and even a new name As of Aug 11 the Ram Shack is open for business The Ram Shack is taking the place of what was once the campus bookstore where students would purchase books and other materials needed for classes CIU switched to an online textbook provider last spring which cleared up space for the new campus store and café The area was partially renovated last spring and the upgrade was completed over the summer We wanted to make it more inviting for students and less like a bookstore manager Kathy Weathersby explained More like a coffee shop area The Ram Shack offers clothing and basic school supplies as well as pizza chicken wings a salad bar and freshly made scones It also offers soft drinks coffee and pre packaged college essentials like Oreos and ramen noodles Students can grab a snack and study at a table or catch up with a friend over coffee We were trying to give the students a more comfortable place to hang out in the evening as well as more food options so they wouldn t have to drive off campus for late night snacking Weathersby said As part of their meal plans students are also given 100 in Ram Bucks a credit which is put on students ID cards and can be used to purchase any of the store s diverse offerings The best part has probably been the Ram Bucks junior Hannah Jones said I can walk in and even if I don t have money on me I can buy a scone or a coffee In addition CIU s physical plant built a porch area in front of the store where students
