  • President Obama to Honor CIU Alumnus | Columbia International University
    among 102 mathematics and science teachers from all 50 states the District of Columbia Puerto Rico and the Department of Defense Education Activity to be to be recognized The annual award honors outstanding K 12 science and mathematics teachers who are selected by a panel of distinguished scientists mathematicians and educators following an initial selection process at the state level Sarazen has been a public school elementary teacher for 20 years mostly in the Columbia S C area In addition he taught for two years in Chengdu China with International Schools of China Sarazen who teaches with the belief that if no learning has occurred then no teaching has taken place says he is humbled and honored to receive the Presidential Award It serves as a reminder to me that God and others are responsible for the achievements in my life Sarazen said So in a larger sense I represent the educators I have worked with and students I have taught This award encourages me to teach with renewed purpose to accept new challenges and to serve my colleagues to the best of my ability Sarazen also conducts district professional development presentations and has written an article on teaching fractions

  • Former CIU administrator/professor Peter Letchford with the Lord | Columbia International University
    passed away on Dec 17 2013 in Augusta Ga following a fruitful life of ministry He was 96 years old Letchford had a long resume that included missionary to Africa church pastor and dean of the Graduate School of Missions He was involved in ministry to the very end Nearly a year ago he was still teaching a Bible class for seniors at First Presbyterian Church of Augusta when his life caught the attention of The Augusta Chronicle http chronicle augusta com life your faith 2012 02 17 ex missionary now leader bible class augusta church CIU Chancellor George Murray who sat under Letchford s teaching when he was a CIU student remembers him as a great Bible teacher and preacher who could explain Scripture and apply it in relevant ways He helped me fall in love with the book of Hebrews Murray recalls He was also a rigorous and demanding Greek teacher When he spoke publicly he was a bit of a contrarian often taking issue with commonly accepted thought even Christian thought making you think carefully about what you believed and why Murray says Letchford was also a fabulous organist who would accompany the worship singing in the

  • Graduation Celebration x 2 | Columbia International University
    separates CIU from one of the state s largest prison facilities Graduation day includes commencement in Shortess Chapel on the main campus and at Kirkland Correctional Institution where the CIU Prison Initiative holds a separate ceremony for a cohort of CIU student inmates The Initiative offers an Associate of Arts degree to qualifying inmates who are then sent out to state prisons across South Carolina as chaplain s assistants The Dec 13 celebrations this year started in the morning in Shortess Chapel on the main campus where 106 students were recognized for earning degrees from Associate of Arts to doctorates The commencement speaker was Don Brock the senior pastor of Gateway Baptist Church in Ballentine S C He was substituting for CIU Chancellor Dr George Murray who was under the weather Speaking from the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25 Brock told the graduates that the parable reminds him of how God has invested in each believer He has invested the Holy Spirit in your life He has invested spiritual gifts into your life He has invested certain abilities He has even invested a personality into you Brock began The reality is that one day I will give an account to God for that investment I will give an account to Him for what has happened to those resources He invested into me Brock then challenged the graduates So as you begin this next journey of your life I hope you are taking stock in the investment God has made in you and what are you going to do with that investment Then in the afternoon several members of the CIU faculty and administration crossed the river by car over a bridge for the CIU Prison Initiative commencement where a cohort of 12 male student inmates received their diplomas

    the end of the semester to celebrate God s faithfulness in their various off campus ministries Student Mission Connection SMC hosted a Christmas cookie social for the students to fellowship and share testimonies of what God had done through them We re here to celebrate SMC member and junior Matthew Dunavant announced God has done great things this semester and that s exciting SMC is a student organization that connects CIU students with ministry opportunities in Columbia Students form ministry teams to reach out to various segments of the community including the homeless internationals victims of sex trafficking and many others I joined the international ministry this semester junior Whitney Spradley said There s an international Bible study every Friday It s so exciting to eat a meal and open the Word of God with these people Students also shared testimonies of how God is moving in the Muslim ministry In the fall of 2012 some SMC members prayed for opportunities to befriend Muslims in Columbia A year later the ministry is thriving I didn t realize how much God had moved until I sat down and thought about it Muslim ministry leader and sophomore Amy Hollinger said God has opened so many doors and we re excited to see what He s going to do Students also befriended the homeless planted churches in downtown Columbia and shared the gospel with international students at Ben Lippen School a Pre K to 12 grade ministry of CIU that includes a boarding program for 81 international students One of my girls at Ben Lippen School grew up in China sophomore Rianna Vinzani said It was cool to see how shy she was in the beginning and then little by little getting to know her I saw her break out of that shell

  • CIU Announces Winner of Full-Tuition Scholarship | Columbia International University
    McQuilkin Scholarship Weekend included 47 high school seniors representing 11 states with one student travelling from the country of Hungary The weekend featured intense interviews interactive group activities panel discussions and just plain fun Andrew learned that he was the winner of the scholarship on the Monday following the competition when he received a congratulatory phone call from CIU president Dr Bill Jones I was very surprised Andrew said I guess I was kind of shocked Andrew was very familiar with CIU long before the competition His father and mother John and Cindy Hampshire graduated from CIU in the 1980s and his sister Kristy in 2012 Andrew was born and lived the first 10 years of his life in Nairobi Kenya where his parents served as Wycliffe Bible Translators influencing his decision to major in Intercultural Studies at CIU so he can also be prepared for missionary work after graduation I ve always loved mission trips and I love meeting new people Andrew said It just seems like that is where God is leading me Andrew s love for God and for people led him into a busy life of outreach during his high school years He has served at
