    view a larger version David Emerson November 15 2013 CIU alumnus David Emerson is the new chief executive officer of The American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter located in Phoenix It is the fifth largest Red Cross chapter in the United States serving more than five million people in Arizona It has 30 staff members 500 adult volunteers and 400 youth volunteers Emerson graduated with a Master of Arts degree

    version Julia Panos carries the ball for the North women Photo by CIU student photographer Timothy Wolff November 11 2013 By Melissa McCutchan CIU Student Writer With fall semester coming to a close CIU students took a break from their studies and donned their silliest clothes for Student Union s Spirit Week held Nov 4 9 The week featured dress up days and a variety of fun activities all leading up to the annual CIU Bowl held Nov 9 Our goal was to encourage the students to have fun and enhance the good community that we already have in the student body Student Union member and sophomore Katie Baum said Spirit Week kicked off with a special Bible Trivia chapel on Monday Each residence hall sent one representative to compete in the game show style competition The prize A gift card for the hall to share The festivities continued on Tuesday as students put on their blue and gold to support the men s and women s basketball teams who played home games that evening The following day residence halls competed in Decades Day with each residence hall assigned to dress in a different decade Walker Hall won the competition with their 1950s attire My favorite day was Decades Day freshman Lydia West said I really love seeing people get into the different activities Throughout the week Student Union also encouraged students to take a break from their studies They hosted a game night a free car wash and a movie night to get students connected and having fun The week culminated on Saturday with the much anticipated CIU Bowl The CIU Bowl is an annual flag football game Students divide into two teams North and South with separate games for men and women Most teams begin practice weeks before

    Photo Gregg Martin Click image to view a larger version Basketball baby Grace Mendenhall wife of CIU men s coach Kyle Mendenhall shows off the couple s new baby Hezekiah born just a week before the season opened Photo Gregg Martin November 05 2013 Columbia International University celebrated its 90 th anniversary by making CIU history For the first time the CIU Rams entered intercollegiate men s and women s basketball with games against the Johnson University Royals of Knoxville Tenn on Nov 2 The games capped off a 90 th anniversary homecoming celebration at CIU The men won their inaugural game 113 97 The atmosphere was electric as fans packed the Moore Fitness Center to support the Rams Senior point guard and team captain Isaiah Reeves scored the first basket in program history and went on to lead the team with 23 points and 9 assists Meanwhile the women opened the double header with a loss to the Royals 67 40 Despite the defeat women s coach Tammy Holder was upbeat I am so proud of the effort and intensity of this team Holder said It was an amazing atmosphere in which to play our first ever game and

  • Ram Jam: CIU Ready for Intercollegiate Basketball | Columbia International University
    staff crowded into Moore Fitness Center for Ram Jam a fun filled introduction of the men s and women s basketball teams along with the debut of CIU s mascot Ram Jam is an opportunity to introduce the team to the student body women s head coach Tammy Holder said It s our chance to show appreciation to the fans and encourage spirit throughout the season Fans were on their feet cheering as the teams introduced their players and coaching staff Finally the athletics department debuted their new mascot an energetic ram who spent most of the evening getting the fans on their feet The men s team also scrimmaged Orangeburg Calhoun Prep Academy in a close and hard fought game With 24 seconds on the clock the Rams tied the scrimmage 75 75 Tensions were high as the seconds ticked away until Orangeburg Calhoun sank a three point shot that ended the game Despite a tough loss fans and players alike were in high spirits I was really surprised by the student section men s guard and freshman Alex Fant said They were just standing and cheering the whole time The athletics department held a drawing for T shirts gift cards and the grand prize a shofar bought during the last CIU Israel study tour The shofar is a ram s horn used in Israel as a signaling trumpet and is blown at CIU athletic events Students and players alike were in high spirits after the scrimmage and are eagerly awaiting the start of the official season The fans definitely got our guys pumped tonight Coach Holder said I believe we ll definitely have a home court advantage because of our great fans The Rams played the scrimmage without Head Coach Kyle Mendenhall who was rather busy elsewhere His

  • CIU Students Read Through the Bible – Aloud | Columbia International University
    By Melissa McCutchan CIU Student Writer CIU students faculty and staff gathered around a navy blue tent from 8 a m to midnight each day the week of Oct 21 They had a clear goal in mind to take turns reading God s Word aloud from Genesis to Revelation in three days CIU took time to emphasize one of its core values the Authority of Scripture Chapel speakers addressed the topic and the Scripture reading tent was set up to get the CIU body deep into God s Word Rachel Weaver a student in the CIU Seminary School of Ministry organized the Scripture reading tent as a way for the CIU community to fellowship around God s Word Students signed up for a 15 minute time slot where they read until someone else came to take their turn I love getting to read the Bible like this because of the community that forms around it Weaver said People are really excited about it I ve had so many tell me they have been encouraged by it This is the third time the CIU body has read through the Bible as part of its emphasis on the authority of Scripture It

    Rams soccer team has been named Athlete of the Week by the National Christian College Athletic Association NCCAA Freshman goalkeeper Luke Brooks took the honors Oct 1 among defensive players in Division I Brooks had seven saves for CIU in a 2 0 shutout of Bob Jones University on Sept 24 Brooks was also stingy at the net in a 4 1 win over Concordia College three days later CIU
