    Program Director Dr Dan Delozier as Captain Hook from Peter Pan Click image to view a larger version Joy Badley as Belle from Beauty and the Beast May 06 2013 By Melissa McCutchan CIU Student Writer As far as we know Cinderella got home before midnight and was in class on Monday So was Goofy and every other Disney character that ventured off campus for a Friday night of fun at the Disney Extravaganza held at St Andrews Evangelical Church CIU students and faculty members donned their most creative attire for the May 3 event sponsored by the Student Senate Senate Vice President Tim Caiello said the goal was for students to chill and unwind a bit before finals I ve never seen the student body go so all out to dress up for an event before Caiello said It was clear that a number of the CIU students spent time preparing their costumes From a group dressed as Robin Hood and his band of merry men to couples dressed as princes and princesses the costumes were as diverse as the Disney film collection The church fellowship hall was turned into a wonderland of sorts with a lighted dance floor

    Rankin Click image to view a larger version Dr Hans Finzel April 26 2013 The morning of May 18 will be full of celebration on the campus of Columbia International University CIU as 214 students receive diplomas recognizing degrees from bachelor s to doctoral during two commencement exercises The commencement exercises begin at 8 30 a m for graduate students and at 11 30 a m for undergraduate students Both ceremonies will be held in Shortess Chapel Giving the commencement address tothe graduate students will be Dr Jerry A Rankin president emeritus of the Southern Baptist International Mission Board IMB Rankin served with the IMB for 40 years the last 17 as president Prior to that Rankin lived in Asia for 23 years doing missionary work Today Rankin directs the Zwemer Center for Muslim Studies at CIU He has authored seven books four about missions two about spiritual warfare and one about the book of Psalms The commencement address to the undergraduate students will be delivered by Dr Hans Finzel the past president and CEO of WorldVenture WorldVenture based in Littleton Colo is a network of Christian workers in over 70 countries throughout the world Finzel is also the founder

    version The students use the information in the book Operation World as a prayer guide April 17 2013 By Melissa McCutchan CIU Student Writer Columbia International University s Student Mission Connection SMC hosted a week of prayer for the nations April 15 19 SMC erected a makeshift prayer tent outside of the G Allen Fleece Library Students signed up for a 15 minute time slot inside the tent and prayed for a specific country based on prayer requests found in Jason Mandryk s Operation World The Definitive Prayer Guide to Every Nation We want the students of CIU to be more in prayer for the world to be more aware of what s happening around the world SMC member and freshman Hannah Lingenhoel said We saw this as a good way to start people seeing that need for prayer In addition to increasing students prayer for the nations SMC s other goal was to raise awareness about the needs of other nations It s always good to have my perspective widened that God doesn t just operate here but that He operates in other nations too participant and junior Lauren Forester said Even though beforehand I didn t know anything

  • CIU Students Urged to Redeem the Media for Christ | Columbia International University
    Student Writer Columbia International University students were challenged to redeem the media for Christ in a Chapel message from media critic Dr Ted Baehr Baehr is the chairman of the Christian Film and Television Commission He is also the founder and publisher of Movie Guide a publication that provides a critical analysis of media based on biblical values Baehr s talk focused on the role his organization has played in engaging the American film industry and he challenged CIU students to do the same I believe if we are truly going to reach the world for Christ some of us are going to have to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ in the media Baehr said In addition to reviewing movies Movie Guide hosts a film gala each year Like many award shows the gala honors moviemakers and actors by category However at the end of the event Movie Guide presents an economic analysis of each movie showing that movies with Christian values turn more profit at the box office The result Baehr says movies with positive Christian content have dramatically increased from 1 percent in 1984 to 57 percent in 2011 We ve shown secular moviemakers that they can make more money at the box office with redemptive plot Baehr said The apostle Paul said he didn t care why the gospel was preached he just wanted the gospel preached However Baehr also showed the media s strong negative effect which can go so far as to harm the Christian witness Most nations think America is a debauched place Baehr said Where do they get these ideas The media When they think America is debauched they also think Christianity is debauched Dr Baehr really encouraged me in my hopes for using media to impact the
