    the finish line of the 5k Click image to view a larger version Temperatures near freezing did not deter the runners Click image to view a larger version Dozens of volunteers helped make the Second Annual CIU Discover Run a success February 04 2013 The wooded hills of Columbia International University make for a demanding run But dozens of athletes from around South Carolina were up to the challenge on a cold Ground Hog s Day 2013 as they took part in CIU s Second Annual Discover Run that included a 5k and 10k race CIU men s cross country recruit Garrett Searcy ran away with the 5k race winning by almost two minutes with a time of 20 32 For Gary McAlister of Rock Hill S C it was almost like the movie Ground Hog Day McAlister was first across the finish line this year just like last year but in a different race McAlister the winner of last year s 5k this time won the 10k with a time of 43 14 On the women s side Irmo High School senior Janay Chisolm took the 5k with a time of 23 45 CIU cross county recruit Alexis Zwilling

  • First Black Student Admitted to CIU Returns as Chapel Speaker | Columbia International University
    now Columbia International University CIU made CIU the first institution of higher education in South Carolina to voluntarily admit a black student Spencer who attended CIU from 1963 1965 returns to Columbia to address a Chapel service on Feb 7 at 11 a m as part of CIU s commemoration of Black History Month The public is invited to attend In the early 1960s as the federal government began to mandate the integration of Southern public colleges the CIU Board of Trustees was already grappling with the issue in March 1963 According the book This Side of Heaven Race Ethnicity and Christian Faith by Robert J Priest and Alvaro L Nieves the board voted that in the future no one be refused admission to the Bible College on the basis of race solely becoming the first white institution of higher education in South Carolina to voluntarily desegregate Spencer a black Jamaican began classes at CIU on Sept 5 1963 At that time CIU President Dr G Allen Fleece reported to the board our first Negro student Peter Spencer from Jamaica had the highest recommendation and has proven to be everything we could desire Spencer would go on to become a

    coach Stefanie Basinger January 17 2013 Athletics history continues to be made at Columbia International University CIU as Georgia high school basketball standout KaRa CAR ah Thompson became CIU s first women s basketball signee CIU women s and men s basketball programs are scheduled to begin play this fall KaRa from Greenbrier High School in Evans Ga signed a letter of commitment Jan 16 at CIU with her mother Melissa Wheat and high school coach Stefanie Basinger looking on KaRa is a shooting guard for the Greenbrier Lady Pack which has a winning record of 14 3 KaRa is team captain a scholar athlete and averaging in double figures CIU Women s Basketball Coach Tammy Holder says KaRa possess all the qualities that CIU is looking for in a Christian student athlete both on and off the court KaRa excels not only on the basketball court as a team leader but is an outstanding student and loves the Lord with all her heart Holder said KaRa whose dream is to become a basketball coach is looking forward to making CIU athletics history One of the things I ve always wanted to do in my life is make history somehow

  • Bookends: Two Reflections on the Teaching Career of Dr. Bill Larkin | Columbia International University
    such a thing as Facebook let alone the Internet Larkin was making an impact on students at CIU Liu discovered that recently when she met CIU alumnus Leiton Chinn a former missionary to Korea at the 2012 Urbana Missions Conference in St Louis Chinn was in one of Larkin s first classes when he began his teaching career at CIU in 1975 Dr Larkin introduced himself as just beginning his teaching ministry Chinn recalls His humble spirit was not perceived as nervousness or feeling intimidated As he reviewed the course expectations it was clear that though he was a rookie instructor he assumed his responsibility in the confidence of the One who called him After 38 years of teaching and scholarship Larkin s resume includes a long list of accomplishments Heis an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church in America and joined the faculty of CIU after a year of pastoral ministry in Philadelphia and the completion of graduate study in England He has authored or co authored six books including Bible commentaries He has contributed numerous articles to a variety of scholarly publications and is recognized by his peers as a leader in evangelical missions and biblical societies Chinn says he was a benefactor to Larkin s diligence to the Word of God I was impressed with Dr Larkin s focused desire that we learn how to study the Scripture and glean from its depths Chinn said While he fulfilled his professional responsibilities as an instructor I felt that his teaching was a ministry rather than a job and that his personal passion for understanding the Bible exuded in his teaching Liu agrees that Larkin teaches his students to be careful expositors of the Bible He teaches us to understand the Scripture within its context and communicate its message

    Robertson McQuilkin New Book to Honor CIU President Emeritus Robertson McQuilkin Click image to view a larger version Robertson McQuilkin shares a laugh at CIU Homecoming 2012 January 04 2013 A book in honor of the life and work of Columbia International University President Emeritus Robertson McQuilkin is being written Organized and edited by CIU professor Dr Christopher R Little the book will include chapters by such well known figures as Ralph Enlow president of the Association for Biblical Higher Education ABHE long time CIU professor William Larkin apologist Paul Copan and Hans Finzel the former president of the missions organization WorldVenture CIU dean of the College of Intercultural Studies Mike Barnett says the goal of the book is to use McQuilkin s legacy and writings as a foundation and springboard to carry forward discussions on various topics of fundamental importance for a new generation in the 21 st century These topics include hermeneutics world missions spiritual living Christian ethics and church leadership Robertson McQuilkin served as CIU s third president from 1968 to 1990 Prior to becoming president of CIU McQuilkin served as headmaster of Ben Lippen School then for 12 years as a missionary in Japan Today McQuilkin
