    Joint Theater Hospital Bagram Airfield Afghanistan As the senior hospital chaplain at the only trauma center in Afghanistan I oversee and deliver pastoral care to 528 Joint Medical Staff who provide urgent health care to U S and Coalition Forces Afghan National Security Forces contractors and local nationals What is the relationship between those you minister to and the chaplain How do they view you My primary mission is to offer spiritual care to every wounded warrior who comes through our facility In most cases patients usually stay here for 24 48 hours before being transported to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany I am viewed by the medical staff and wounded warriors as the one who cares for their soul or their spiritual health and emotional well being Do they trust you Why do they come to you Do you seek them out As a chaplain my ministry philosophy involves building relationships with the people I serve alongside so that I can offer pastoral care and counseling to them when they go through a difficult time or crisis In a matter of days after my arrival I found myself counseling staff about how to better care for themselves after being exposed to injuries of severely wounded service members Caring for the caregiver is crucial in a hospital setting especially when located within a combat zone and that is why I have several confidants back home to help me process what am I experiencing over here Are many of those you minister to churched What is their view of God I have met hundreds of patients from a variety of religious faiths groups and denominations as well as a few atheists and agnostics Many ask me to pray for them their families and especially the members of their unit that

    and the bad in three little words He is enough That was also the message of CIU s May 2012 commencement speaker Crawford Loritts Loritts is an evangelist and author who also serves as senior pastor of the 2 000 member Fellowship Bible Church in Roswell Ga Loritts addressed first the commencement for CIU seminary and graduate students on May 12 and a couple hours later spoke at a separate commencement for CIU undergraduate students At both commencements his message centered on Colossians 1 9 For this reason also since the day we heard of it we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding Loritts warned the graduates not to have a Pollyanna view of the Christian life that says if you are in God s will you will never have problems The will of God will lead you to some very dark and lonely places Loritts told the graduates The will of God will have you face tragedy in your life The will of God will have you face disappointment in your life So that God will prove himself to be all that you need Loritts also testified from personal experience that God is sufficient God will give you every single thing you need if you re submitted to His plan Loritts said In over 40 years of ministry God has never ever failed me CIU President Dr Bill Jones conferred degrees on 245 undergraduate graduate and seminary students At the Undergraduate ceremony CIU honored Mrs Eleanor Jo Cook co founder of one of the largest pest control companies in the United States with the Doctor of Humane Letters Degree In 1950 Mrs Cook partnered with her late husband

  • NASCAR Great Kyle Petty at CIU | Columbia International University
    Petty a member of NASCAR s most famous family has spent three decades as a NASCAR driver owner and media commentator His father Richard Petty known as the King is recognized as the greatest champion in NASCAR history His grandfather Lee was a larger than life figure in the early days of stock car racing While Kyle Petty made his mark in racing by starting in 829 races he is also well known for his philanthropy With his wife Patty he founded Victory Junction Gang Camp near Level Cross N C where nearly 5 000 children with life threatening or chronic illnesses find hope laughter friendship and adventure every year The Camp is in memory of Petty s son Adam the fourth generation of Petty drivers who was killed at age 19 in a practice accident at New Hampshire International Speedway In that one moment your life totally changes Petty told over 200 people who attended a luncheon at CIU s Moore Fitness Center It totally changes your perspective on life You expect your grandparents yourself to go before your children It totally disrupts everything You question the seasons you question absolutely everything It shakes you to the core It s the hardest thing that any parent can go through God bless any parents here who have walked that road Petty told the crowd that he became a follower of Jesus Christ as a youth And now as an adult he sees what God was doing through the legacy of the Petty family fame It seems that God put us in this place to use the notoriety my family has gained to use this sport as a platform to help other people Petty said Not to win trophies not to win notoriety not to win fame but to change a
