  • Beloved CIU Professor “Roasted” | Columbia International University
    Beyer May 09 2012 By Jacob Given CIU Student Writer Dr Jack Layman an esteemed professor at Columbia International University was sent off to retirement with a roast Layman is retiring after 29 years of teaching at CIU and 14 years as a teacher and administrator at Ben Lippen School a Pre K to 12 th grade ministry of CIU CIU Associate Provost Dr Bryan Beyer and a panel of four student leaders roasted Layman onstage in Hoke auditorium which was filled almost to capacity by students friends and family of Layman Attendees traveled from as far as Vancouver to attend the event Even Robertson McQuilkin the third president of CIU was on hand The panel of students was made up of representatives from CIU s student newspaper Pilgrim s Protest and the student publication Credo Beyer and the panel took turns recounting stories and making jokes all at Layman s expense Some roast material included jabs at Layman s age Student Josh Cornelissen made references to Layman s involvement in such events as the Renaissance and the Civil War Layman was not without defense he was given a chance for rebuttal afterward Layman concluded with a testament to God

  • History: CIU’s First Intercollegiate Athletic Contest Scheduled for Aug. 25 | Columbia International University

    the job Lee Morris Sr has been a positive influence on CIU students who work in the Physical Plant May 01 2012 By Abbey LeRoy CIU Student Writer Fifty years after being hired as a teenager to move furniture Lee Morris Sr was recognized for his half century of service to Columbia International University during a May 1 Faculty Staff Recognition Chapel at CIU Morris was hired in 1962 as CIU then called Columbia Bible College was completing its move from downtown Columbia to its current location on Monticello Road I was hired in a temporary position said Morris just for the move He soon became a full time custodian Morris who never imagined working for more than a couple weeks has seen countless changes on the campus over the past 50 years Columbia Bible College was still being built when I was hired Morris said There were no classrooms at that time Students met in the basement of Founders Residence Hall and in the basement of the Administration Building The library was located in the basement of Memorial Residence Hall Since 1962 campus has grown and so has Morris responsibility The demand to maintain the campus is greater because

  • Christian Evangelist, Author, Pastor to Speak at CIU Commencements | Columbia International University
    of capacities during his career Since being ordained to the gospel ministry in 1972 Loritts has been an evangelist with American Missionary Fellowship evangelist and church planter with the Urban Evangelistic Mission the associate director of Campus Crusade for Christ and since 2005 he has served as senior pastor of the 2 000 member Fellowship Bible Church in Roswell Ga In addition Loritts has authored seven books hosts the daily radio program Living a Legacy and is a frequent speaker for professional sports teams including three Super Bowls and the NCAA Final Four Chapel CIU President Dr Bill Jones will confer degrees on 245 students who have completed undergraduate graduate or seminary programs The commencement exercises for CIU Graduate Programs and CIU Seminary School of Ministry Programs begin at 8 30 a m Commencement exercises for Undergraduate Programs begin at 11 30 a m Both ceremonies will be held in Shortess Chapel on the CIU campus At the Undergraduate ceremony CIU will honor Mrs Eleanor Jo Cook co founder of one of the largest pest control companies in the United States with the Doctor of Humane Letters Degree In 1950 Mrs Cook partnered with her late husband John R Cook

  • NASCAR Great Kyle Petty Coming to CIU | Columbia International University
    of NASCAR s most famous family has spent three decades as a NASCAR driver owner and media commentator His father Richard Petty known as the King is recognized as the greatest champion in NASCAR history His grandfather Lee was a larger than life figure in the early days of stock car racing While Kyle Petty made his mark in racing by starting in 829 races he is also well known for his philanthropy With his wife Patty he founded Victory Junction Gang Camp near Level Cross N C where nearly 5 000 children with life threatening or chronic illnesses find hope laughter friendship and adventure every year Petty also founded the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America to benefit children s causes To date the Ride has raised over 14 million and is the most successful philanthropic event staged by any person in the NASCAR family When Petty isn t behind the wheel of a racecar or serving humanitarian or philanthropic causes he is a featured racing analyst on television radio and the Internet Petty will share lessons from his faith and life experiences with guests at the noon luncheon in CIU s Moore Fitness Center Earlier in the day
