  • CIU Custodian to be Honored for 50 Years of Service | Columbia International University
    on Monticello Road They hired 18 year old Lee Morris as a temporary worker Soon after he was offered a full time position Morris has been employed at CIU ever since On May 1 CIU will honor Morris for 50 years of service during a faculty staff recognition Chapel at 10 50 a m in Shortess Chapel In his half century at CIU Morris has served as a custodian and custodial supervisor He has seen more changes at CIU than any other employee It s estimated that he has driven onto International Boulevard the entrance to the CIU campus over 12 000 times On his first trips on the boulevard Morris saw dirt instead of today s lush grassy median When Morris started CIU had no library and no student center As a matter of fact most of the buildings on the CIU campus today did not exist in 1962 including Ben Lippen School In 1962 Ben Lippen was still in its original location in Asheville N C CIU Director of Facilities Bob Register who estimates that Morris has attended over 7 000 CIU Chapel services says Morris exemplifies the Christian work ethic to his co workers and CIU students

  • CIU Alumna Wins Three Dove Awards | Columbia International University
    But for 2003 Columbia International University alumna Laura Story those questions are real life Story a Christian singer songwriter made those questions the theme of a song titled Blessings written after her husband Martin Elvington developed a brain tumor in 2006 Story says the song is a reminder that God remains faithful even when He doesn t answer our prayers the way we want Him to But little did Story know that the song would earn her a 2012 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Song in February and three Dove Awards in April She took home the Dove for Pop Contemporary Album of the Year for Blessings The title track of that album also won both Song of the Year and Pop Contemporary Recorded Song categories The Dove Awards are sponsored by the Gospel Music Association GMA The 4 000 member GMA is dedicated to promoting the gospel through a variety of music styles Soon after receiving her Grammy Award Story announced that she and Martin are expecting their first child At the Dove Awards she announced that they had just learned that day that the baby is a girl She ll be my new release Story joked with

  • CIU Alumna Remembers Chuck Colson | Columbia International University
    to view a larger version Ginny Dent Brant April 23 2012 While many people are remembering the ways Chuck Colson touched their lives few have memories of Colson from the perspective of Columbia International University alumna Ginny Dent Brant Colson a former White House aide who was the first to be charged in the Watergate scandal that brought down President Richard Nixon passed away on April 21 from complications resulting from a brain hemorrhage He was 80 Colson was a colleague of Brant s father Harry Dent who was also a White House advisor under Nixon After serving his prison sentence Colson went on to found Prison Fellowship Ministries and was widely known for Break Point his radio commentaries on culture and Christianity Because of Colson s working relationship with Harry Dent Ginny Dent Brant was acquainted with Colson in his days before Christ and after Christ Colson s life change was obvious to Harry Dent who would also later give his life to Christ graduate from CIU and be named CIU Alumnus of the Year in 2001 Ginny Dent Brant who gradated from CIU in 1977 remembers Chuck Colson in a guest commentary in the Christian Post Lessons from

  • Dr. Anita Cooper Receives Excellence in Teaching Award | Columbia International University
    its member schools A faculty member from each of 20 institutions of higher learning is nominated for the award according to rigorous guidelines The recipients are honored at a special awards dinner and receive a 3 000 professional development grant Cooper who has been on the faculty of CIU since 1985 is intentional about serving CIU s students and sharing her life with them Each year the Lord gives me an extraordinary love for my students explains Cooper I want to do anything I can to get to know them better Known for asking students How s your heart Cooper isn t afraid to share her own Because she is willing to invest in students both in and out of the classroom she has a platform from which she can set an example for life as well as ministry CIU alumna Mary Randolph says she was impacted by the personal interest Cooper took in her I appreciate that Dr Cooper takes the time to get to know her students and their hearts her love for them is clear Randolph said She has shared words of wisdom teaching advice and a passion for the Word of God with me But most of all she has set an example of godliness that I want to follow Cooper tells her students being a good teacher isn t the goal Don t work hard because you want to be a good teacher work hard because you love God and you love others is the way Cooper explains her approach to teaching Becoming a good teacher is a byproduct of loving well And Cooper is quick to point out that her love for God and students isn t something she produces herself Prayer and God s Word are foundational to my teaching Cooper said I
