  • CIU Alumna Wins Grammy Award | Columbia International University
    Martin Elvington February 13 2012 Christian singer songwriter Laura Story a 2003 graduate of Columbia International University earned a Grammy for her song Blessings which she wrote and recorded Story received the award in the Best Contemporary Christian Song category during the afternoon ceremonies at The 54th Annual Grammy Awards on Feb 12 at Staples Center in Los Angeles Story a native of Spartanburg S C told the Spartanburg Herald Journal that she was just so shocked after walking the red carpet with her husband Martin Elvington to receive the honor Blessings was written after Martin developed a brain tumor in 2006 Story says the song is a reminder that God remains faithful even when He doesn t answer our prayers the way we want Him to She says that s why there are a lot of what ifs in the chorus of the song Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops What if Your healing comes through tears What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You re near What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise Laura Story talks more about the song Blessings in a video at her website

    Run a Success First Annual Discover CIU 5K Fun Run a Success Click image to view a larger version The 5K begins Click image to view a larger version The drum corps of Ben Lippen School was on hand to motivate the runners Click image to view a larger version The winner of the 5K Geary McAlister catches his breath after crossing the finish line February 08 2012 The First Annual Discover CIU 5K Fun Run brought together students faculty and staff from Columbia International University and Ben Lippen School as well as members of the community The Feb 4 event was hosted by CIU Rams Athletics and organized by CIU Cross Country Coach Jud Brooker Over 50 people participated in the 5K The course winds through CIU s 400 acre campus which includes seven miles of cut shady trails The winner was 54 year old Geary McAlister with a time of 23 42 Coach Brooker thanked the many volunteers who made the race a success and says visitors to the campus were impressed Runners from the Columbia area thoroughly enjoyed coming onto campus for the event Brooker said The event also helped Brooker prepare for CIU s entry into

  • History: First Intercollegiate Athlete Signs to Play for CIU Rams | Columbia International University
    has committed to play a sport at Columbia International University Soccer stand out Daniel Mallard of Greensboro N C becomes the first intercollegiate athlete to commit to the CIU Rams as the school fields its first teams in intercollegiate athletics this fall Mallard is the team captain for the Wesleyan Christian Academy Trojans in High Point N C one of the top private school soccer programs in North Carolina The Trojans won the NCISAA 3A State Championship this year Mallard a starting forward who led the team in scoring his sophomore and junior seasons is also the team chaplain Off the field Mallard is active in sports ministry in North Carolina and on mission trips He also serves as senior class chaplain at Wesleyan and has been active in working with youth through his church and in the community CIU Soccer Coach James Whitaker says Mallard is the type of athlete CIU is looking for as the Christian school enters intercollegiate athletics Daniel is an outstanding soccer player and team leader and has played at a very high level for his high school and club teams Whitaker said What excites me even more is to see Daniel s heart for

  • CIU Dedicates Renovated G. Allen Fleece Library | Columbia International University
    was on fire The blaze caused by an electrical problem would cause 2 5 million in damages Jones recounted that story on Jan 24 2012 at the dedication of the renovated G Allen Fleece Library When I saw how good this library turned out I made a list of other buildings to pray for Jones joked from the podium The 1 3 million in improvements to the library includes glass enclosed rooms that encourage collaborative study the latest high tech connectivity new furniture a copier alcove and a coffee nook that features a coffee maker that grinds the coffee beans The renovated library opened to students on Jan 17 The dedication followed a chapel message by CIU alumnus Dr David Calhoun of Covenant Theological Seminary in St Louis the son in law of G Allen Fleece Fleece was the second president of CIU and instrumental in the building of the original library in 1968 David Fleece and Anne Fleece Calhoun children of G Allen Fleece attended the dedication and said the renovated library is a fitting tribute to their father My father was a quiet man David Fleece said He found places of solitude in which his faith was nourished and maintained and he valued the handing down of the knowledge of the Scriptures Since the fire students had been using a temporary library in a small steel framed building that students dubbed The Book Barn CIU student Jacob Tedder said the transition from The Book Barn to the renovated library is nearly overwhelming I don t feel like the walls are closing in on me anymore Tedder said This new library has a lot more space and will be a lot better for studying Student Emily Cox agreed I love it I have a place to chill out and
