    message from Jon Ozmint Click image to view a larger version CIU Prison Initiative Co Director David Osterlund hugs a graduate who just received his diploma August 26 2011 The third cohort of the Columbia International University Prison Initiative graduated on Aug 26 The commencement speaker was a key figure in the development of the Initiative former South Carolina Department of Corrections Director Jon Ozmint During his eight years as the corrections director Ozmint worked with CIU to develop the Initiative that trains qualified inmates to be a positive influence throughout the prison system under the guidance of prison chaplains Prison Initiative student inmates earn an accredited Associate of Arts degree from CIU and then are assigned as chaplain s assistants With 95 percent of South Carolina inmates returning to the streets Ozmint and CIU recognized the need to equip incarcerated men with an accredited degree and faith development program studies have shown that involvement in faith based programs make prisons safer and reduce recidivism We are so pleased with the positive impact of the Prison Initiative both for inmates individual lives and for South Carolina s prison system as a whole Ozmint told WIS TV in Columbia The program

    view a larger version Renovations to West Residence Hall include microwave fridge and movable furniture Click image to view a larger version The renovated G Allen Fleece Library is projected to open in mid October August 22 2011 Columbia International University upperclassmen are returning to Columbia for a new semester and for many of them a residence hall that doesn t quite look like it did when they left in May Construction crews were busy over the summer There was a total makeover of West Residence Hall creating an atmosphere a little more like home Each remodeled room resembles work recently performed in Memorial and East Residence Halls and features new amenities such as a microwave fridge and movable furniture Walker Founders and Petty residence halls received new furniture plus a face lift with new roofs windows and other exterior improvements Development of the new athletic fields continued over the summer as the CIU Rams gear up for the inauguration of intercollegiate athletics one year from now Baseball softball and soccer field are taking shape The plan includes a central press box concessions stand restrooms and scoreboard Meanwhile renovations to the G Allen Fleece Library continue The library was heavily

  • Beyer Named Dean of CIU College of Arts and Sciences | Columbia International University
    dean of students from 2001 2004 Most recently Beyer served as director of the Biblical Languages program at CIU In addition to his commitment to the classroom at both undergraduate and graduate level at CIU Beyer has also focused on writing and international travel Since 1997 Dr Beyer has served as chair of the Associated Schools for Jerusalem University College and since 2003 as General Bible Old Testament Book Review Editor for the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society JETS He has authored or co authored three books on the Old Testament and assisted in the translation of the book of Jeremiah in the Holman Christian Standard Bible He has served as faculty advisor to the International Students Ministries at CIU and regularly takes students to Israel on summer study tours His overseas ministry has included teaching at Portantorchas Bible School in Costa Rica at the Center for Christian Leadership in Tirana Albania at CIU s branch campus in Korntal Germany and Israel study tours for church groups Beyer has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colorado State University a Master of Divinity degree from Denver Seminary and a Ph D from Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion CIU
