    larger version CIU upperclassmen show their muscle and school spirit with temporary Rams tattoos August 16 2011 Some came in hatchbacks stuffed to the roof Some came with U Hauls in tow Some came in a taxi from the airport But all have one thing in common Their first year at Columbia International University is about to begin About 130 CIU freshmen and transfer students were welcomed outside the freshmen residence halls Aug 16 by upperclassmen with encouraging smiles and plenty of muscle as they helped the new students move in Some of the freshmen hugged and shook hands with each other like old friends having met during CIU s Preview Days Dads and moms followed lugging suitcases laundry bags and even some bicycles Welcome Week includes Connect CIU an orientation to college life CIU style During the week the new students will meet their RAs and go over the ground rules for life in the residence halls learn about study skills and student organizations and get to know each other at a variety of social events The theme for Connect CIU is a play on words Shofar So Good It s a way to introduce the students to the

    the summer bicycling up the East Coast the Columbia International University 1More Tour team was welcomed home by a group of proud fans A crowd of CIU students and faculty gathered in the Moore Fitness Center on Aug 1 to hear testimonies from the five cyclists comprised of four CIU students and one CIU alumnus The team shared about the great things the Lord did over the summer as they sought to recruit 1More student reconnect with 1More graduate and share God s love with 1More person The tour started in Florida on June 6 and ended on July 27 in Maine The Lord was glorified in this said Michelle MacGregor director of recruitment relations MacGregor coordinated and provided oversight for the tour both this year and last 1More Tour rider Drew Williams a student in CIU Seminary School of Ministry voiced the sentiments of the whole team I was amazed by the connection we had with people because of Christ Williams said We really got to see the Body at work and that had a huge impact on me Associate director of Alumni Ministries Morgan Jones is an advocate of the tour and opportunities like it We need to

  • CIU Students Minister in Ghana | Columbia International University
    to God Africa became my story in the summer of 2011 I appreciate that God has allowed me to stretch my viewpoint through unique experiences in Africa I can describe my trip to Africa with this one word DIVERSITY I went to Ghana in West Africa as a short term mission trip with four other CIU students First of all our team members were very diverse We are Korean Asian American Caucasian American African American and Ghanaian Each of us has a different skin color temperament and way of viewing things In short everything was different about each of us The one thing we had in common was a passion for Christ This passion for the gospel made us one body in Christ The differences caused us to struggle However God helped us to be transformed through that time and He led us to love each other in unity Second I experienced this DIVERSITY by observing the Ghanaian Christians They had a great passion to evangelize people to pray loudly and to praise God with shouting singing and dancing They had a different way to worship God our Father I was excited that I could witness this diverse way of

  • The Library Books are Coming Home | Columbia International University
    Library Click image to view a larger version Hot work The boxes of books are unloaded from a truck and unpacked in a temporary tent Click image to view a larger version The staging tent where the books are unloaded and the renovation to the library entrance in background July 19 2011 The first semi truck load of books returned home on July 19 to the G Allen Fleece Library at Columbia International University from their temporary housing in Atlanta The books were cleaned and restored in Georgia following a May 2010 fire at the library As the books are unloaded off the truck they are unpacked in a temporary tent outside the library put on book carts and wheeled into the library where they are being processed before they are put on the shelf The William B Meyer Company of Massachusetts has hired temporary workers including CIU students to do much of the work CIU Library Director Jo Ann Rhodes is asking for prayer for the workers especially for those who are working in the temporary tent as temperatures in Columbia are around 100 degrees The pallets of boxes will be unloaded every other day off the semis There

  • International Christian School Educators Gather at CIU | Columbia International University
    of Columbia International University July 10 15 for the 41 st annual International Institute for Christian School Educators IICSE Each year Christian school administrators and teachers meet at The Institute for intensive seminars prayer and fellowship Opening the conference on Sunday evening CIU Vice President for Christian School Education Mickey Bowdon expressed his enthusiasm for the Institute The most exciting part about the conference is that we have people from around the world expanding God s Kingdom through Christian school education Bowdon said Dr Milt Uecker a professor in the CIU College of Education shared in Bowdon s excitement but also sought to provide answers to some of the issues and struggles facing Christian education He challenged the delegates to think critically about their schools We have a responsibility to be academically excellent and thoroughly transformational Uecker said Three keynote sessions were given by education consultant Dr Dan Beerens Beerens reminded delegates many of whom are still worn down from a long school year that they are called to faithfulness not success as the world defines it Djaba Nyakotey a delegate from Ghana was grateful to attend the conference for the second time He is preparing to be an administrator

  • CIU Adds Master’s Degrees in Chaplaincy | Columbia International University
    Langston is the professor of Chaplain Ministries at CIU July 15 2011 To meet the growing need for chaplains in the United States Columbia International University is now offering master s degrees in chaplaincy Beginning in the fall semester students can begin working toward a Master of Divinity Chaplaincy or a Master of Arts in Chaplaincy in CIU Seminary School of Ministry These degrees will equip students to minister in a variety of settings including military chaplaincy institutional chaplaincy such as police chaplain or hospital chaplain and organizational chaplaincy that focuses on the corporate world sports and those involved in crisis management Dr John Harvey the associate dean of CIU Seminary School of Ministry says the chaplain is playing an increasingly important role in today s world In an increasingly un churched society the chaplain is the person people turn to in a time of crisis Harvey said Harvey also notes that CIU is strategically located for a variety of chaplaincy work The chaplain school for all branches of the U S armed forces is now at Fort Jackson in Columbia Harvey said Plus Columbia has four major hospitals several penal institutions and is an educational cultural and business center
