  • An Alternative to Dr. Jack Kevorkian | Columbia International University
    and Muriel McQuilkin June 08 2011 It s a story that continues to pop up nearly every day on the Internet The story is linked from Web site to Web site from blog to blog It s the story of A Promised Kept the story of Columbia International University President Emeritus Robertson McQuilkin and his late wife Muriel It s a simple story in one sense A man sets aside his career as the president of a thriving college to care full time for his wife who is suffering from Alzheimer s disease But it s perhaps the counter culture nature of Robertson McQuilkin s decision that makes the story so compelling and to some so foolish He made a vow till death do we part and he kept it even in an age where some say suicide is the best answer to a debilitating disease The story has now gone mainstream George Berkin a columnist and reporter for The Star Ledger newspaper in Newark N J picked up on the McQuinkin love story following the recent death of Dr Death Jack Kevorkian a well known advocate of assisted suicide What does the death of Kevorkian and the McQuilkins have

    Fleece Library Click image to view a larger version West work begins The men s residence hall undergoes wall to wall improvements June 07 2011 It s a busy summer for construction on the campus of Columbia International University Thanks in part to many faithful financial donors work crews are improving the G Allen Fleece Library and the inside of West Residence Hall Improvements to the exterior of Founders Petty and Walker Residence Halls may also be coming soon The library renovation comes just over a year after a fire caused 2 5 million in damages mostly to the interior of the building Much of the new infrastructure is in place and in early June crews laid carpet and began to set up book shelves That makes CIU Librarian Jo Anne Rhodes happy Having the shelves here is great because many times that is the very thing that holds up a library Rhodes said on Facebook When the original library was built in 1968 we had to open up with all the books in boxes on the main floor I remember because I was the one who had to find a book when a student wanted it Workers are also

    of Students Rick Swift encourages students to get involved in the Global Day of Prayer June 03 2011 By Lenae Simpson CIU Student Writer Columbia International University students will be an important part of the annual Global Day of Prayer on June 12 The Global Day of Prayer is a call to repentance and unity through prayer The worldwide event which began in South Africa in 2000 has expanded to 220 nations with 300 million participants Last year over 4 500 people met at the Colonial Life Center in Columbia for the Global Day of Prayer as CIU students helped spread the news of the event among Columbia area churches CIU President Bill Jones was one of several Columbia area Christian leaders who spoke at the local observance CIU students are playing a key role in this year s day of prayer by encouraging local churches to take part Students are the church of today said Barry Russell the youth pastor at East Lake Community Church in Irmo S C northwest of Columbia The Global Day of Prayer is an awesome opportunity to preach the Kingdom of God Local organizers say there are over 600 churches in Columbia and the

  • Bob Kallgren With the Lord | Columbia International University
    with viewing to be held one hour prior to the service Bob was born May 1 1942 in New Haven Connecticut to the late George Alfred and Maisie Mugford Kallgren After completing high school he enlisted in the US Army serving from 1960 63 in the Corp of Engineers as a heavy construction machine operator He was assigned to the 175th Heavy Equipment Company located in Germany with job assignments in Germany and Libya He later earned a bachelor s degree from the University of New Haven CT his masters degree from Columbia International University and his doctorate from the University of South Carolina In 1972 Kallgren began what would be a 39 year career at CIU He held several positions over the years all in administrative roles This led to professional opportunities in the field of biblical higher education Foremost he became a volunteer consultant for the Association for Biblical Higher Education by consulting and reviewing member institutions in accreditation issues He invested effort in several community endeavors over the years He was a charter member of Columbia Christian Fellowship perhaps the first church in Columbia to be truly inter racial where he served as an elder for about 25 years He served on the board of Bethel Bible Camp and was a member of Columbia Rotary Club for many years Another long term relationship involved service on the board of Providence Home a ministry that has been greatly used to strengthen the lives of men desiring to recover from addictions Kallgren also served for several years on the board of the Nehemiah Project a community outreach program of Zion Temple Baptist Church He is survived by his wife Judy Journigan Kallgren his sons Rob Kallgren and Tim Kallgren Rebecca a sister Sandra Fern Pelle and two brothers George

    Click image to view a larger version Will Schafer May 17 2011 Will Schafer the president of Master Automotive in Augusta Ga and Aiken S C was elected to the Columbia International University Board of Trustees at its May 6 meeting in Columbia Master Automotive includes Buick GMC Chevrolet and Cadillac franchises Schafer 42 lives in Augusta and has worked in the family business since he was a teenager He has been president of the company since 2002 The company was founded by Schafer s grandfather in 1934 Schafer says he brings common sense business experience to the CIU board but mostly is excited to serve because he has a passion for CIU s purpose of educating people from a biblical worldview to impact the nations with the message of Christ I think the biggest thing I bring to the board is a passion for the gospel and training CIU students in gospel centered ministries wherever that ministry might be Schafer said At his first board meeting Schafer was introduced to a number of CIU students and was very impressed The quality of student is exceptional at CIU Schafer said My excitement is to help these new leaders Schafer is
