  • Dr. Jerry Rankin to Head Zwemer Center for Muslim Studies at CIU | Columbia International University
    image to view a larger version Dr Jerry Rankin May 10 2011 Dr Jerry Rankin has been named the new director of The Zwemer Center for Muslim Studies at Columbia International University effective May 6 Rankin recently retired after 40 years of service with the Southern Baptist International Mission Board IMB the last 17 years as president Prior to becoming president of the IMB Dr Rankin and his wife Bobbye served for 23 years in Asia initially as missionaries in Indonesia the largest Muslim country in the world The Zwemer Center offers a curriculum on Muslim Studies including a master s degree and sponsors research seminars dialogues and training conferences While continuing to live at his home in Mississippi Rankin will give direction to planning administration and implementation of the growing Muslim Studies program at CIU under the auspices of the Zwemer Center Dr Mike Barnett the associate dean of the College of Intercultural Studies at CIU says Rankin brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the area of Muslim Studies Dr Rankin s decades of service with the IMB are invaluable as we look to the future at the Zwemer Center and consider new venues for Muslim studies

    www ciu edu muslimstudies Do not gloat over bin Laden s death I was teaching a class on Islam the morning of September 11 2001 But like most Americans I was too stunned to know how to respond This morning almost 10 years later hearing on NPR that the mastermind of that attack had been killed in a Pakistani town close to where one of our children had been born the words of Solomon came to mind Do not gloat when your enemy falls Proverbs 24 17 So I cringed to hear of jubilation in Washington and New York as it was a stark reminder of how offended we were by some reactions by Muslims on 9 11 President Obama announced the surgical raid by Navy Seals in somber tones but there were bagpipes playing Amazing Grace near Ground Zero and scenes of Americans dancing in the streets In contrast to celebration I would like to suggest three different reactions First bin Laden has been irrelevant in most of the Muslim world for many years and his calls for violence have long since been dismissed This was abundantly clear through the uprisings that have rocked the Middle East this spring It was never said the revolution was taking place because bin Laden called for it or that his was the pathway to much needed change Throughout it has been an Arab revolution not an Islamic revolution Second rather than rejoice we need to pray for Christians in a country that has been so torn apart by terrorism Since al Qaeda and affiliates are still very much alive a chapter may have been closed but not the book A Pakistani Christian who is close to our family just recently came under attack Previously threatened for his testimony and publications as a

  • Southern Baptist Leader to Speak at CIU Commencement | Columbia International University
    emeritus of the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention will deliver the commencement addresses at Columbia International University CIU on Saturday May 14 The commencement exercises for CIU Seminary School of Missions and the CIU Graduate Programs will begin at 8 30 a m and exercises for the CIU Undergraduate School begin at 11 00 a m Both events take place in Shortess Chapel on the campus of CIU CIU President Dr Bill Jones will present diplomas to 234 graduates for degrees ranging from Bible Certificate to Doctor of Ministry The graduates will join the 17 000 other CIU alumni serving in nearly 150 countries Rankin recently retired after 40 years of missionary service with the International Mission Board He and his wife Bobbye served in South and Southeast Asia for 23 years including tenure as area director for the region they lived in Thailand Singapore Indonesia and India For the last 17 years Rankin has served as president of the IMB an organization sending and supporting more than 5 000 missionaries serving in 190 countries around the world Rankin is from Mississippi where he attended Mississippi College and later earned the M Div from Southwestern Theological Seminary
