  • CIU Commemorates Black History Month | Columbia International University
    view a larger version The Temple Zion Baptist Choir joined in the celebration at CIU February 17 2011 By Abbey Shoemaker CIU Student Writer Columbia International University commemorated Black History Month with a week of chapels that focused on healing the racial divide and featured pastors from the Columbia area The week was sponsored by CIU s African American Fellowship Ministries whose mission is to serve the CIU body and the Columbia community by building bridges between ethnic cultures As he introduced the week s theme CIU President Bill Jones encouraged students faculty and staff alike to rip off cultural blinders that keep us from seeing life from a biblical worldview Pastor Greg Cunningham of New Light Beulah Baptist Church reminded students of God s heart for the world Christianity makes us responsible for all people groups Cunningham said Similar statements were made throughout the week as listeners were exhorted to keep an eternal perspective and to adopt a Kingdom culture The week closed with a message from CIU alumnus Andre Melvin the pastor of Temple Zion Baptist Church who explained that because of Jesus sacrificial death on behalf of all people the ultimate racial divide has already been healed

    E Lanpher is the new provost at Columbia International University Lanpher comes to CIU from Trinity College of Florida where he has served as vice president for academic affairs since 1999 Lanpher holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Notre Dame a Master of Arts in Theology from the University of Notre Dame a Master of Divinity from Alliance Theological Seminary in Nyack N Y and a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University His professional involvement includes the chairmanship of the Commission on Accreditation at the Association for Biblical Higher Education ABHE from 2007 2008 Lanpher is also a licensed official worker with the Christian and Missionary Alliance the denomination in which he grew up Lanpher says he is honored to be a part of CIU I have always known CIU as a premier institution in biblical higher education and it will be a privilege to work alongside the many dedicated faculty and staff who are committed to educating people from a biblical worldview to impact the nations with the message of Christ Lanpher said CIU president Dr Bill Jones says Lanpher was appointed following an extensive search and appraisal process Dr Lanpher is

    T Chandapilla with the Lord The Rev P T Chandapilla with the Lord Click image to view a larger version December 17 2010 Columbia International University 1988 Alumnus of the Year The Rev P T Chandapilla went to be with the Lord on Dec 7 after a long illness He was 84 years old Chandapilla a 1955 graduate of CIU then called Columbia Bible College was a missionary pioneer and theological educator in his home country of India He founded and led a number of ministries for the poor disenfranchised and blind He was founding general secretary of InterVarsity in India through which many university students in India came to know Christ and grow into church leaders He was vicar general of St Thomas Evangelical Church a denomination of 250 churches and president of the board of management of Jubilee Memorial Bible College in Madras India At one time he served as general secretary of the Foundation of Evangelical Churches of India His ministry had a wide impact in bringing Indians to Jesus Christ and challenging them To Know Him and to Make Him Known the motto of his alma mater CIU For reflections on the life of P T

  • Popular Author, Local Businesswoman Receive Honorary Doctorates | Columbia International University
    column for Christianity Today magazine which he still serves as editor at large Today Yancey and his wife Janet travel around the world supporting the missionary work of Philip s books which have been translated into 35 languages Elizabeth Rickard Sessions is a lifelong resident of Lexington County S C near Columbia Trained as a Bible teacher Sessions joined in her mother s vision to minister to the elderly and less fortunate In 1948 Rickard Nursing Homes was founded in Lexington County where Sessions served for 28 years as an administrator providing for the physical and spiritual needs of thousands of patients She also led daily devotions for the residents and played the piano so they could join her in singing hymns Sessions is an active member of Lexington Baptist Church where she sings in the choir and teaches Sunday school She mentors youth in the Lexington Alternative School and has served as chaplain to the women in the Lexington County Detention Center for over 26 years Dr Bill Jones president of Columbia International University says it s an honor to recognize these two CIU alumni with the Doctor of Humane Letters They have uniquely distinguished themselves in their spear of influence Jones said In his charge to the graduates Yancey encouraged them to leave CIU with an attitude of humility something he says he didn t do 40 years prior when he graduated from CIU then called Columbia Bible College I had to come to terms with pride and learn humility which is a necessary prerequisite for grace Yancey said Yancey said there needs to be a balance between zeal for the Lord and knowledge He said during his CIU days he thought there was too much zeal and not enough emphasis on knowledge something he resented But he

    language overseas is the winner of the 2010 R C McQuilkin Scholarship at Columbia International University Laura Paisley of Hudson Ohio was awarded the full scholarship following a weekend of intense competition on the campus of CIU Dec 2 4 The R C McQuilkin Scholarship is awarded annually to a high school senior who demonstrates high academic achievement leadership qualities a passion for Christ and a desire to make Him known through Christian service in ministry or the marketplace Prospective students were judged on interviews and relationship building activities Over 50 students from 13 states vied for the award which is named in honor of CIU s first president Laura daughter of Brenda and Andrew Paisley is a student at Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy in Hudson and is an active member of Hudson Community Chapel Her ministry includes leading a small group for seventh grade girls and participating in four missions trips Laura says she is extremely excited about attending CIU in the fall to major in Education or Intercultural Studies I have found the school to be one that strives to provide a place for students to grow in knowledge of God and love for others Laura said I
