    10 minutes to share a Bible verse that was significant in her life Debby Jones the wife of CIU s president Dr Bill Jones shared Psalm 16 11 You will make known to me the path of life In Your presence is fullness of joy In Your right hand there are pleasures forever This verse taught her to value her relationship with God as her first priority Though it was easy to be distracted by young men while single Mrs Jones had learned to date God and find her path of life fullness of joy and pleasures forever in Him Anne Buck administrative assistant to CIU Vice President Mickey Bowdon began by boasting I did not know who Mrs Buck was and I was surprised at her boldness She likes herself is loved by her children and has been married for 27 years She is healthy and loves people and grocery shopping She even started a Christian magazine I had no idea why she shared all this until she also shared her past abandoned by three mothers suffered severe trauma attempted suicide Her life had seemed hopeless but the Lord came and rescued me Everything I thought would never happen did all the blessings all God s promises have come true in my life Her verse was Romans 8 18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us Dr Anita Cooper a CIU professor for 26 years spoke next on John 14 18 I will not leave you as orphans I will come to you Dr Cooper believes this verse teaches the single most important doctrine in Scripture That is God will not leave His people as orphans He is our Father

  • Philip Yancey to Speak at December Commencement | Columbia International University
    at CIU s December commencement exercises Yancey is the author of 20 books that explore the questions faced by most Christians and include Where Is God When It Hurts Disappointment with God and Prayer Does It Make Any Difference He drew heavily from his CIU background in developing The Student Bible a best selling edition of the Bible with study notes Yancey s books have won 13 Gold Medallion Awards from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association and have sold more than 15 million copies A native of Atlanta Yancey met his wife Janet Norwood at CIU and went on to earn graduate degrees in Communications and English from Wheaton College Graduate School and the University of Chicago He joined the staff of Campus Life Magazine in 1971 and worked there as editor and then publisher In 1978 Yancey became a full time writer initially working as a journalist for such varied publications as Reader s Digest Publisher s Weekly National Wildlife and The Christian Century For many years he wrote a monthly column for Christianity Today magazine which he still serves as editor at large When the Yanceys left CIU they planned to serve as missionaries to Europe Today they

    Pine View Apartments as CIU trustees administrators faculty staff and students dedicate the apartment community to the glory of God October 10 2010 By Abbey Shoemaker CIU Student Writer In a celebration of God s guidance and provision members of the Columbia International University family gathered to dedicate the school s new Pine View Apartments to the glory of God Expressing the heart of those involved in the planning and building process Marvin Schuster chairman of the CIU Board of Trustees thanked God for His provision and promised on behalf of the university to be diligent with God s property Chairman of the Development Foundation Jeff Wheeler communicated a similar desire to be faithful stewards of God s land that He has chosen to entrust to CIU Recognizing the potential for ministry CIU President Bill Jones said it s like a dream come true to see married students and younger students living in close proximity that will hopefully enable mentoring relationships to develop Director of Residence Life Mike Thompson echoed Jones desire for on campus ministry opportunities He said the apartments provide another vehicle for ministry at CIU in which iron sharpens iron so that individuals can be equipped within

    person of the past My name is Rita Hayworth and for those of you who don t know I am an American actress from the 1940s I also married royalty making me a princess in every way This past weekend a tragedy happened aboard the yacht Catching the Spirit on Lake Murray Jerry Oilman a wealthy friend of the rich and famous invited about 70 or so guests aboard his yacht for a red carpet affair I was delighted to see characters like President Kennedy Patsy Cline Frank Sinatra Groucho Marx John Wayne and even Marylin Monroe dressed in their finest Jerry also invited some less than savory guests but not anyone I thought would be capable of performing such a tragedy that followed Upon the arrival of the guests we were informed of dear Jerry s death He had been found in the galley killed by a blow to the back of the head Everyone on the yacht was suspected Some of us knew more than others but everyone was told to mingle and share information It came out that quite a few people had grudges against Jerry and motive was not lacking on my part either Jerry had

    American delegates at Cape Town 2010 The Third Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization Oct 16 25 Also invited to attend are six CIU students The event can be viewed at GlobaLink sites around the world including CIU The history of the Lausanne movement goes back to 1966 when evangelist Billy Graham teamed up with Christianity Today magazine to sponsor the World Congress on Evangelism in Berlin In 1974 a call for a similar gathering drew 2 700 participants from over 150 nations to Lausanne in the Swiss Alps for 10 days of discussion fellowship worship and prayer The Congress achieved an unprecedented diversity of nationalities ethnicities ages occupations and denominational affiliations The GlobaLink at CIU will be in the Schuster Building Oct 22 25 and will include a combination of videos from Cape Town small group discussion and live interaction with the CIU faculty and students in South Africa Among the critical issues to be discussed are other world faiths poverty HIV AIDS and persecution The GlobaLink at CIU is free and open to the public Normal tuition fees will apply for students who are attending the event as a class CIU Chancellor George Murray says the Congress is not

    attend a Majors Fair take a campus tour worship in chapel and even sit in on a class The events are aimed at giving prospective students an authentic taste of CIU life High school junior Abi Bethea from Toccoa Ga attended the fall Undergraduate Preview Day and was impressed with the spiritual vibrancy of CIU The student body and faculty are very serious about loving Jesus Abi said But they also have a lot of fun they are really authentic in faith and action David and Cathie Strawn attended Preview Day with their high school senior daughter Rachel Rachel knew of CIU from an alumnus and WMHK CIU s local radio station Preview Day helped Rachel solidify her decision to major in Psychology and minor in Intercultural Studies I was so encouraged spiritually as an older believer by all the young people worshiping in chapel Cathie Strawn said David Strawn said he found the financial aid seminar most helpful Paying for college seems like a real reachable goal now A recent addition to the Preview Day activities is the Our Passion Is fair CIU students and alumni displayed their passion for serving the Lord through various ministries and occupations and
