  • Student Flash Drive Survives CIU Library Fire | Columbia International University
    Seminary School of Missions and now it was time to pick up her five year old son P J from school So when she hurried from the CIU library on Friday May 7 she left behind her flash drive with important finals week homework on it The next morning a 2 5 million fire did extensive damage to the library with the flash drive somewhere inside But it wasn t until she received an e mail from a CIU staff member that she realized the flash drive was left behind It was found during cleaning The metal of my flash drive is slightly bent and it smells like smoke but God was faithful and preserved all my hard work Campbell said I truly believe this is also true for our library Although it was damaged God is faithful and will bless us more than we could imagine That is also indeed the hope of the CIU administration At the May 15 commencement exercises CIU President Bill Jones announced that the library will not just be restored but will undergo a 2 million renovation The library fire was caused by an electrical problem in a florescent ceiling light No one was injured in the blaze that started in the early morning hours when the library was closed The fire was concentrated in a vital section of the library Many rare Bible translations Bible commentaries dating to the 1800s and other theology books were a total loss All other books have smoke or water damage and are being restored by a company that specializes in book restoration CIU Library Director Jo Ann Rhodes says it may be a year before renovations are completed but no official target date has been set No donations of books are being accepted at this time because

  • CIU Library Begins to Pick up the Pieces after Fire | Columbia International University
    Blackmon Mooring spokesman John Dorn was directing workers rolling the boxes out the door of the library on dollies and to the trucks he explained what will happen to the books once they reach their destination They will be put in an ozone layer to be deodorized Dorn said Once they are deodorized they ll be packed up put on pallets and readied to be brought back here to the library Dorn says the books that are still wet from water damage will go through a freeze dry process that keeps ink from running And if it is wet it will stop any microbial growth Dorn added Blackmon Mooring has quite a bit of experience cleaning up libraries Dorn says in 2006 the company loaded 17 semis with books from the University of New Mexico library after a fire there did 17 million in damages The fire at the CIU library was caused by an electrical problem in a florescent ceiling light No one was injured in the fire that broke out about 6 a m It came as students were preparing for finals week Other local libraries offered their services to the CIU students including the Lutheran Seminary and the University of South Carolina The initial damage estimate the day of the fire was 1 5 million But at the CIU graduation exercises a week after the fire CIU President Bill Jones announced the official damage toll at 2 5 million which is covered by insurance Jones also said instead of just restoring the library CIU will begin a 2 million renovation of the library Meanwhile glass and plaster crunch underfoot as clean up workers and CIU staff members make their way through the darkness of the library with only natural light shining through the smoke stained windows and

  • CIU Library Heavily Damaged by Fire | Columbia International University
    morning fire May 8 The Columbia Fire Department was called to the scene about 6 a m after a student noticed smoke coming from the building and alerted a security guard who called 911 The library was closed at the time and there were no injuries but there was heavy fire damage to both floors at the rear of the two story library and heavy smoke damage throughout the library The cause of the was an electrical problem in a fluorescent ceiling light Damage is estimated at 1 5 million The library is part of the larger Ridderhof Building that also houses Hoke Auditorium classrooms offices a computer lab and WMHK Radio While the fire did not go beyond the library smoke could initially be smelled throughout the building A fire restoration company has eliminated most of the odor and a library restoration company is salvaging what books and equipment it can The fire comes as students are preparing for final exams just ahead of commencement on May 15 But the library will be unusable for a while as the CIU administration looks for a temporary home for the library CIU President Bill Jones came to the campus as soon as he could to view the damage and to lead fellow CIU administrators and staff who were on the scene in a prayer for strength and encouragement He also personally thanked Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins and his firefighters CIU Library Director Jo Ann Rhodes who has been at the library since 1988 watched as firefighters traversed ladders and entered the library through broken windows to extinguish smoldering books inside It s hard to watch Rhodes said It s an old friend Since the fire Rhodes says she has been heartened by an outpouring of support from fellow librarians around

    Alumni Long Time CIU Choir Director and Wife Named Honorary Alumni Click image to view a larger version Bill Supplee leads the choir and student body Click image to view a larger version Joyce Supplee May 06 2010 Between 1949 and 1989 G William Bill Supplee exalted the Lord at Columbia International University by directing the Ambassador Choir and teaching music Because of his devotion to CIU many assumed over those 40 years that he was a CIU alumnus He wasn t then But he is now Bill Supplee and his wife Joyce were named honorary alumni of CIU at a chapel service that featured Bill back in his old role of choir director Dozens of CIU alumni who were former Ambassador Choir members joined Bill on the stage of Shortess Chapel for a medley of hymns that ended with the student body joining in for a spine tingling rendition of Holy Holy Holy Joyce was recognized for her 26 years of music ministry as the Ambassador Choir business manager organizing tours and juggling the necessary details Former Ambassador Choir members sent notes of encouragement to the Supplees thanking them for many fond memories One called Bill an awesome teacher
