  • Senior Class Gift
as of January 19 2016 The Importance of Internships Internships have become an essential component of higher education and a valuable prerequisite to post graduate success They serve as important tools in career explorations and skills development that help Colgate students translate their liberal arts education into rewarding professional paths Meeting a Need Although generous Colgate s existing funds are insufficient to meet the full financial needs of students who pursue unpaid or underpaid internships Students face significant financial barriers to securing internships if they are unable to forego summer wages or to live in a distant city where the internships are offered During the spring of 2015 442 students petitioned Colgate for internship support With limited funds the institution was able to support only 211 students We anticipate that student requests for internship support will continue to grow rapidly a need that the Center for Career Services will be unable to meet without your help A Challenge for Parents and Families Colgate is pleased to announce Nic Loiacono P 16 has agreed to serve as the parent advisor to the committee and will assist by encouraging parents and families to support the initiative He has decided to challenge the parent and family community by pledging to match all gifts towards the effort 1 1 up to 25 000 We hope that our parent community will rise to the occasion and participate in the challenge Keep in mind that one of Colgate s goals this year is to develop a culture of philanthropy on campus by encouraging students to make their own gifts To support this objective the student Presidents Club membership was lowered to 13 Please allow your student to make a gift Thanks in advance for your support For questions about the challenge please contact Tony Burns Director

  • Fostering Resiliency
time to learn how to fail Read Full Message The late Reverend Peter Gomes former Chaplain of Harvard College s Memorial Church began each new academic year with a speech about the Virtues of Failure The essence of his message was this If we are to profit from failure to learn from it then we are free to imagine to take on impossible things that we would otherwise avoid for fear of failure We need to embrace failure to make it our friend and not be afraid of it As students if we worry about being perfect and sticking to subjects and activities that we are good at our fear of failure will limit us It will increase our self doubt and worry As family members we need to give our student permission to struggle and to fail It is sometimes difficult to find the right balance of support for your student while encouraging self reliance We naturally want to shield our loved ones from pain struggle and failure In small manageable doses challenge is the catalyst for profound growth and development Instead of rushing to provide an answer we might ask What do you think you should do College is not supposed to be easy It is rigorous and challenging and will require that students push themselves beyond what may feel safe and comfortable intellectually Students are challenged to talk when they want to be quiet listen when they want to talk meet new people who aren t like them explore disciplines that require considerable effort to master cope and develop strategies for self care I invite you to partner with us and better prepare your student for success and failure Below are some resources and articles that may assist you in this effort Resiliency The American Psychological Association
