    and climate change and two NSF Engineering Research Centers researching laser technologies and remote sensing College of Engineering researchers are productive Our engineering faculty s average research expenditures are consistent with annual faculty expenditures at other excellent institutions Our make federal research expenditures of about 476 000 per year compared to 370 000 per year at institutions ranked in the top 20 On a per faculty basis NSF ranked Colorado State first in federally funded research and development among all public institutions In 2007 CSU s electrical and computer engineering and atmospheric science programs ranked in the top ten nationally by the Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index a ranking that compares academic programs according to quantifiable data such as publications federal grant dollars awarded and honors and awards Our numbers are growing rapidly College Research Annual research expenditures per faculty members in FY11 608 833 Federal research expenditures per faculty FY08 476 270 Annual research expenditures in FY11 63 927 517 Space devoted to engineering research in square feet 791 545 Centers institutes and special research units 105 Our faculty and staff numbers have grown 25 over the past five years and we anticipate additional growth in people and programs We are adding faculty strategically in order to build interdisciplinary programs and research units One example CSU s School of Biomedical Engineering the first in Colorado is composed of 26 core faculty from four colleges and is based in the College of Engineering Undergrad graduate students contribute to real world research Students are active in our research programs In 2009 more than one hundred graduate research assistants were actively working in our labs as well as numerous undergraduate students Student design teams have made discoveries leading to patents new products and start up companies Examples Game controllers for the disabled Search
