  • Mission: Solutions for Sustainable Development - The Earth Institute - Columbia University
    is straining the planet s resources threatening the health of our environment and ability to thrive By blending scientific research education and practical solutions The Earth Institute Columbia University is working to help guide the world onto a path toward sustainability The Institute under the direction of Professor Jeffrey D Sachs comprises more than 30 research centers and some 850 scientists postdoctoral fellows staff and students Working across many disciplines we study and create solutions for problems in public health poverty energy ecosystems climate natural hazards and urbanization At our largest research unit the renowned Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory some of the world s leading scientists study geology oceans freshwater systems climate and atmosphere Our scientists map the ocean floor and measure the movements of ice sheets they bore into ancient trees and pull cores of mud from the sea bottom to uncover secrets of past climate they chart the flow of ocean and the swirl of atmosphere around the planet Millimeter by millimeter they measure the movements of the earth s crust as it thrusts up from far below or dives down into subduction zones This fundamental knowledge about the dynamics of the earth is key to addressing our biggest challenges Earth Institute experts work hand in hand with academia corporations government agencies nonprofits and individuals They advise national governments and the United Nations on issues related to sustainable development and the Millennium Development Goals They are educating the next generation of leaders in basic sciences and sustainable development We focus on the protection of earth s environment and the spread of social and economic opportunities for all people We believe that dealing with issues such as extreme poverty must involve tackling issues such as environmental degradation and lack of access to health care and education Our work reflects

    Water based research addresses the potentially global crisis of freshwater scarcity Research projects that address Energy focus on major energy sustainability objectives such as the development of energy resources without increased carbon emissions and the recovery of renewable energy from solid wastes Our research in Urbanization looks at how growing urban populations threaten the sustainability of cities and natural resources Hazards and Risk research at the Earth Institute aims to deepen the world s understanding of a range of hazards and risks from drought to earthquakes to landslides which often become particularly threatening in highly populated areas Global Health research addresses both the environmental factors that affect human health the ways in which a population s poor health in turn inhibits environmental sustainability and the methods of delivery of health systems Poverty related Earth Institute projects aim to reveal and work toward the mitigation of root causes of extreme poverty while research on Food Ecology and Nutrition works to ensure the sustainability of regional factors of human health such as agriculture clean water access and nutrition The Earth Institute s research theme of Ecosystems Health and Monitoring aims at stemming the loss of biological diversity in order to achieve environmental sustainability Our interdisciplinary projects are focused on solving the pressing issues of sustainable development Scientists and experts involved in these projects work in collaboration with local communities many in the poorest areas of the world with the aim to achieve sustainable development while preserving the natural systems that support life on Earth The Cross Cutting Initiative The Earth Institute s Cross Cutting Initiative CCI challenges Columbia researchers to examine problems that have greater complexity and interdisciplinarity and with a more direct link to the Earth Institute s mission of advancing the understanding and achievement of sustainable development The initiative is
