future If someone were to ask me What are three choices you made in your 20s which resulted in a change in your life I would say without hesitation 1 Going to college in America 2 volunteering abroad in a developing country and 3 coming to the School of International and Public Affairs During the winter break in 2006 I went to a rural city in a developing country in South America to volunteer abroad This became the second turning point of my life which opened my eyes to the missions of international organizations in developing countries On Christmas Eve night the other volunteers and I went to a local square to celebrate the holiday As soon as we left our taxis two adolescents mugged my American roommate and I It happened so suddenly and the people on the street just stood there while the volunteers hid in the taxi Only the taxi drivers attempted to intervene Interestingly although the other victim and I underwent the same experience we interpreted the situation quite differently While my interpretation was that two impoverished adolescents had mugged us the other volunteer believed that the local people in the town and the taxi drivers had planned the robbery in advance I wondered what was the truth behind our divergent interpretations After the robbery the volunteer group divided into two groups until the tension passed I began to wonder what could contribute to reconciliation between people who feel divided from one another Secondly I became critical of the country s welfare policies and social system due to the fact that the locals just let the adolescents rob us This seemed to suggest that the social policies and systems do not support social justice in that country and that they do not empower the poor to escape poverty Subsequently I interned at the UN Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development APCICT http www unapcict org I gained invaluable experience and knowledge in this internship working with people who wanted to share their expertise with a beginner in the field But I felt that I did not know enough to effectively deal with the issues of refugees peace building and the role of the UN and various international organizations in relation to the government of each country Two good friends of mine who knew about my passion in this field recommended that I apply for SIPA and I was accepted in Fall 2009 The MPA program in International Security Policy in which I am specializing in International Conflict Resolution has been rigorous Lacking a strong economics or quantitative background I struggled in some of my courses However one of the strengths of SIPA s program is studying and working as a group and I have made what I hope will be some life long friends Since I started the program my study group members have supported and motivated each other The professors TAs and tutors in each subject have also been
