    works hard to attain academic excellence while involving itself in a wide range of cultural sporting and social activities It has particularly strong traditions in sport music and drama and is noted among Oxford colleges for its relaxed friendly and happy atmosphere THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM Junior Year Abroad students do not read for a degree of Oxford University and thus do not matriculate as members of the University Visiting Students are however considered full members of the colleges to which they are admitted as visiting students and enjoy all the privileges of matriculated degree students They are taught by the same tutors and to the same standard as matriculated degree students Studying abroad almost invariably entails coming to grips with a different system of education Oxford is unusual even by U K standards in that the major part of a student s work is done not as part of a large group in classes or lectures but at tutorials in which just one or two students meet with a tutor for a period of concentrated study The system thus places great emphasis upon students developing their own independent skills of critical evaluation methodology and organization It is noteworthy that in the Research Assessment Exercise conducted in 2001 by the Higher Education Funding Council for England almost all Departments in the college were consistently top ranked some receiving commendation for research quality of international excellence in a majority of departments and national excellence in all others Biochemistry Chemistry Computer Science Economics Engineering English Language and Literature Geology Law Mathematics Medieval History Modern History Modern Languages Philosophy Physics Politics and International Relations Psychology For more information see the program website http www seh ox ac uk THE TUTORIAL SYSTEM Tutorials take place once a week and consist of an hour s in depth discussion between the student and his or her tutor At the center of the tutorial is an essay paper which the student will have been asked to prepare over the course of the preceding week Typically the tutorial will begin with the student reading the essay out aloud to the tutor the tutor will then criticize both the approach and the content of the essay suggest alternative ways of tackling the subject and initiate a more general discussion which may move on to embrace both related and unrelated topics It will be apparent that the tutorial is an extremely concentrated form of teaching and learning For a whole hour the student has the undivided attention of an expert in the field which he or she is studying Achievement cannot really be measured in conventional terms At the end of the tutorial a new topic for the forthcoming week will be assigned and the student will be directed towards essential reading The tutorial is a highly personalized learning experience Tutorials are arranged on an individual basis taking into account the subject to be studied and the area of expertise of the tutor Unlike a lecture course you cannot sign up

    of London one of the great world cities Students are offered accommodation on campus highly unusual for a university located in central London The Mile End campus is a peaceful secure and friendly environment only a few yards from the bustle of Mile End Road and the East End of London with a host of facilities together on one site cafés bars and restaurants the Students Union canal side accommodation in our Student Village bank and bookshop We are very well served by public transport with two tube stations a short walk from campus The East End is one of the most vibrant exciting and culturally diverse areas of London There is something for everyone street markets parks cafes restaurants pubs museums and galleries Brick Lane which is in walking distance from the campus is famous for its eclectic market Indian restaurants 24 hour bagel shops and is also now home to a growing number of artists and designers It may not be the most famous area of the city but it is certainly worth getting to know Queen Mary is also very close to the site of the 2012 Olympic Games with the main stadium being less than 1 mile from campus The 2012 Olympics will take place in a host of new venues in the local area and the area is being transformed in preparation Many of the new facilities will be reused and the plans are part of the regeneration of the east end of London Study Abroad programme London is a leading destination for Study Abroad students and the Queen Mary programme offers you a fully integrated academic experience You can choose to study for between a full academic year or an Autumn Fall or Spring semester A full course load is four modules for each semester of study All subject areas are open to Study Abroad students and you can choose to concentrate in one area or choose modules from up to four different subject areas All departments offer pre registration and there is seldom any problem in getting into any required classes Accommodation All accommodation on campus is in modern self catered flats All rooms are single and most have en suite private bathroom facilities Typically rooms are grouped in flats for between 4 and 11 students with shared kitchen facilities All rooms are carpeted equipped with a single bed wash basin wardrobe fridge bookshelves desk chair desk lamp and storage space data points for free Internet connections Shared Kitchens are equipped with refrigerators freezers cookers storage cupboards food preparation and dining areas All Queen Mary housing is fully integrated so you will be sharing with other students both from the UK and other countries around the world All accommodation is centrally heated and fees are inclusive of all heating and electricity charges Student Village Study Abroad students live in the College s award winning Student Village located on the Mile End Campus which provides self catering accommodation for 1200 students staff and academic
