    Library s article databases and the Library catalog to get started Watch our video tutorial or read the FAQ to learn more about OneSearch Google Scholar Searches for scholarly materials such as peer reviewed articles theses books preprints abstracts and reports across many disciplines and sources On your first visit go to Google Scholar Preferences and type CSUN in the box next to Library Links and click Find Library check the box next to CSU Northridge SFX Find It and click the Save Preferences button Help is available for using Google Scholar Check for Full Text Using Find Text If the article isn t available full text in the database you are searching click the button to see if we have access to the full text through another database or in print A new page opens that will have one or more of the following links Full text available via database name Click to access the full text online If the link takes you to a publication level page you can navigate to the article by first choosing the correct year then the correct month or volume number then the issue and then selecting the article from the displayed table of contents We have this Check availability in CSU Northridge Catalog We have the article in print Click to view the catalog record for the journal or magazine You ll need to note the call number and then go to the fourth floor to get the article Request document via Interlibrary Loan We do not have the article online or in print You can request the article via interlibrary loan takes approximately ten working days For more information see About Find Text Access Databases from Off Campus Only current CSUN students faculty and staff can access our databases from off

    how to access it To identify relevant journals in Communication Studies and related disciplines search the Library Catalog by the discipline keywords and include the word periodicals in the search e g communication studies periodicals Note any periodical title listed in the Library Catalog proceeded by electronic resource or online means that it is available in full text online via the Internet Use the Publications search in the Communication and Mass Media Complete database and search by known journal title or by general keywords such as interpersonal to identify journals which can then be browsed by date or searched by keywords Also provides basic information about the journal To identify the top journals in communication studies you can look at the National Communication Association s list of journals or the International Communication Association s list of journals Then search the Library Catalog as described above Another option consult Rubin Rubin Communication Research Strategies and Sources 7th ed Chapter 7 has a list of relevant scholarly journals For more information about specific journals do one or more of the following Search Ulrichsweb com which is an online directory of periodicals that is used to identify journals by title subject or publisher and to determine if a journal is peer reviewed where it is indexed if it is currently published etc Google the journal title to get to the journal publisher s website which typically provides detailed information about the journal including its scope audience editorial board and instructions to authors etc Scholarly Journals Peer reviewed Referreed Authors are authorities in their fields Authors cite their sources in endnotes footnotes or bibliographies Individual issues have little or no advertising Articles must go through a peer review or refereed process Articles are usually reports on scholarly research Illustrations usually take the form of

    can search by Keyword Title Author or Subject by selecting the radio buttons and typing search words in the text box The default Limits setting will search the entire collection You may also limit your search to smaller sub collections Ejournals electronic periodicals not specific articles Ebooks NCOD National Center on Deafness TCC Teacher Curriculum Center Periodicals Serials not specific articles Videos Reference Room Special Collections or Sound Recordings by selecting a collection from the drop down menu Searching for a specific Item Select an Author or Title search if you know the author last name first name or at least the first few words of the title Searching for Items by Topic There are two ways to search the online catalog for resources on a topic by Keyword or by Subject A Basic Keyword search will simultaneously look for words in titles of materials in subject headings and in notes fields A Subject search will locate materials by Library of Congress Subject Headings which is a controlled vocabulary or standard list of subject terms The Oviatt Library assigns Library of Congress Subject Headings to all items listed in the online catalog Another way to find the Library of Congress Subject Heading for your topic is to search the catalog by Keyword display the record for a relevant title and select one or more of the Subjects listed for that record Searching for Videos CDs DVDs and Other Media in the Library Catalog Many videos DVDs CDs and other media formats held by the Oviatt Library are listed in the Library Catalog and located in Music Media Instructional media for K 12 are located in the Teacher Curriculum Center Search for media by Author director screenwriter producer artist composer etc and or Title Media can also be searched by topic see Library Catalog Basic Search Limit search results to media as follows For videos DVDs In the Basic search screen change View Entire Collection to Videos DVD in the pull down menu For all media types In the Advanced screen under Optional Limits set the Material Type pull down menu to specify the type of media you want Find a Book on the Shelves Check the Status field of the book s record in the catalog IN LIBRARY book is available for checkout DUE date book has already been checked out The Location field shows the general location of the book Most books are on the 2nd and 3rd floors For other locations check the location codes table The Call field gives the book s call number which serves as the book s address in the library Each row of books on the 2nd and 3rd floors will have a sign at the end indicating which call numbers can be found on that row Locating Book Reviews The following databases are useful for locating book reviews Enter the author and or title of the book as keywords and follow any of the specific instructions listed under each database Book Review

    and then search CSUN in the Find Library box Select Open WorldCat Library Search and CSU Northridge SFX Find It at CSUN and Save You only have to do this once on your computer Google Products Google offers many productivity tools as well as other specialized search engines SearchEngineWatch There s more to searching the Internet than Google This is a comprehensive directory of search engines by type Evaluate Internet Resources The Internet can be a valuable source of information However remember to think critically about the authority accuracy objectivity currency and coverage of the information you find and check with your instructor to see if you can use the Internet as a resource Evaluating Websites Video Evaluating Internet Resources Internet resources can be even more challenging to evaluate because dates and authors are not always readily available Plus we all know that anyone can create a website Using the CRAAP test will help you thoroughly evaluate your source but the following are some important things to consider when reviewing internet sources Who Created the Information Websites do not always have authors so you ll need to find information on who or what organization is responsible for creating and updating the webpage The following are links to look for on webpages that should provide more information on who is behind the website About Us usually provides information about the organization or company that is responsible for the webpage Mission Statement this will provide information on what the organizations values or goals are Contributors provides information on who contributes content to the website sometimes they ll even list the qualifications of their contributors This section may also provide information on who funds either the website or the organization Beware of websites like Wikipedia where anyone can create an account and edit webpages Publication Dates Finding the date a website was created or last updated can be difficult sometimes If you can t find a date on a particular webpage click around and look at the other resources on their website can you find a date anywhere Are there links to other sources that are out of date or dead links URL Domain Extensions The following is a list of the most popular domain extensions which can be used to help determine authority and objectivity However domain extensions alone cannot determine if a web source is quality or if it s right for your research gov Government The intent of the site is to present official information collected by or about the workings of a government edu Educational institution The intent of the site is to educate as well as present information collected by or about the educational institution Look out for student work or papers that haven t been published in an authoritative source com Commercial The intent of the site is to sell goods or services as well as provide information about the company org Organization usually non profit The intent of the site is to present information collected by
