    Faculty Publications and Faculty Datasets Then click Next button STEP 2 Add a description of the work with metadata Initial Questions Stage first check the box if the work you re submitting has mutliple titles second check the box if this work has been published before Describe Item Stage part 1 enter at least the following author s name s title date of issue publisher language en US as appropriate and type of item i e article You can also add ISBN or other unique identifiers as well as whether the work is part of a series Finally you can also add embargo terms if applicable When added click Next button Describe Item Stage part 2 enter relevant keywords click Add button to enter multiple keywords 5 to 7 is ideal copy and paste your publications abstract in the abstract box You can also add the names of sponsors i e grant funders etc in the Sponsors box as well as any further information in the Description box When complete click Next button Describe Item Stage part 3 skip down to Number of pages and add number next include citation a link to the publisher s version doi etc if applicable and add name of copyright owner When complete click Next button STEP 3 Upload Your Files Upload Files Stage Upload your digital files by clicking Browse button add description of file i e PDF main article supplemental files etc If you need to add additional files click Upload File Add Another button STEP 4 Verification Confirmation Review Stage Check your submitted metadata for errors misspellings etc To amend something click Correct One of These buttons Confirm by clicking Next at the bottom of the page You can also examine the uploaded file at this stage to confirm it is

    risk formats cassette tapes VHS DVD etc Subsequent phases will cover the years between 2001 2012 Phase III and 1989 2000 Phase IV Manuscripts are digitized and then placed directly into ScholarWorks CSUN s Open Access Institutional Repository As of January 2015 the first 30 years from 1957 to 1988 have been digitized and placed in the repository We are currently working on multi media analog materials ranging from 1968 2001 The impact of Digitization Digitization has been proven to provide added value to print texts The project will help CSUN and its students in multiple ways First digitized theses will receive a new life and renewed interest online Thousand fold increases in access are associated with digital versions of print texts One thesis from 2001 for example was checked out of the library three times in the 12 years it was on the library s shelf However since being added to ScholarWorks in October 2012 the thesis has been downloaded over 1000 times Second students with disabilities will be able to better access the collection Digital texts with Optical Character Recognition applied to them will allow students with the ability to access these texts As was shown in the HathiTrust lawsuit creating digital indexes of such content for the sake of adhering to the American Disabilities Act ADA is considered a Fair Use under copyright law Finally increased exposure of the thesis manuscripts will help to return some subjects to the fore Many subjects have been buried in recent years in particular from 1960 1990 due to copyright restrictions One article in particular finds an egregious lack of materials available to even purchase let alone access because of overly restrictive copyright policies citation here This project can help to alleviate a small part of this unfortunate gap in the

    exist across the world ranging from entire grant funding organizations to University campuses to individual campus departments and libraries to type specific mandates i e thesis collections The major grant funding organizations include the NEH and the NIH in the United States Harvard Princeton and UC universities are notable pioneers in OA CSUN of course participates in OA with its own Electronic Theses and Dissertations project What is the benefit of Open Access OA It is an antidote to the rising costs of journals and subscription databases It is also an antidote to the dysfunction in academic publishing in general wherein authors are often pressured to relinquish the copyrights to their own work Scholarship created at and subsidized by universities is then sold back to these very same universities at exorbitant prices By aligning with the open access movement the library can restore permanent access to university created and university related scholarship as well as begin the long process of reducing publisher related costs How does CSUN and the Oviatt Library participate in the Open Access Movement The Oviatt Library provides ScholarWorks which is a Green Open Access type of institutional repository We provide a space for faculty to archive their published work in an open access digital preservation platform As part of the Scholar Spotlight program we contact publishers to seek permission for uploading published articles We also solicit pre print and post print drafts from CSUN faculty of published scholarship to include in our repository What is ScholarWorks ScholarWorks is an open access institutional repository It currently showcases the work of CSUN s faculty and students We are showcasing student work such as theses and dissertations we are also showcasing faculty publications including journal articles presentations book chapters and books See an example What is Scholar Spotlight how
