    for academic librarians first described information literacy in 1989 Numerous disciplinary and accrediting associations have also incorporated the Information Literacy Standards for Higher Education and or information literacy language into their documents An Information Competent student is able to Determine the extent of information needed Access the needed information effectively and efficiently Evaluate information and its sources critically Incorporate selected information into one s knowledge base Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose Understand the economic legal and social issues surrounding the use of information Access and use information ethically and legally Information Competence Program at California State University Northridge According to the 1995 report on Information Competence in the CSU information competence is the fusing or the integration of library literacy computer literacy media literacy technological literacy ethics critical thinking and communication skills Adopted into the General Education student learning outcomes and throughout specific disciplinary curriculum across the campus classroom faculty and library faculty are working collaboratively to ensure that CSUN students develop these critical skills needed for lifelong learning and survival in today s information age across the curriculum offerings Campus Projects Several partnerships between Subject Liaison Librarians and classroom faculty are currently underway to integrate information competency into department and college curricula at California State University Northridge Some of these projects have received funding through CSU Information Competence Grants Other successful partnerships and projects include work with First Year Experience coursework University 100 CSU Information Competence Initiative According to the CSU Information Competence Initiative the best way to ensure that students have the skills that they need is to design an information competence program integrated into the curriculum and built on strong alliances between classroom faculty and library faculty Strategies will differ by department but may include efforts based in Freshman Orientation Seminar Courses General Education

    Reserves Periodicals and Microform Reference About Mission Vision and Values Visitor Information Personnel Departments Strategic Planning Library History and Facts Building and Floor Maps Policies WASC Information Ask a Librarian Live Chat 24 7 Text a Librarian Reference Desk Subject Specialists Collections Overview The Oviatt Library has a physical collection containing 1 4 million volumes of which over 1 1 million are books and over 250 000 bound periodical volumes The Library subscribes to 50 944 online journals nearly 2 300 print journals over 200 online databases and 277 361 e books The microform collection contains 3 2 million pieces There are nearly 14 000 sound recordings over 19 000 film and video recordings and nearly 60 000 pictures and other graphic materials The archives and manuscript collection exceeds 4 200 linear feet of materials Supplementing our physical collection especially for periodicals but increasingly for books as well is an array of electronic databases providing access to indexing and in many cases texts on a 24 7 basis from on or off campus Most of our periodicals before 1990 and approximately half of our books are housed in an Automated Storage and Retrieval System ASRS within the Library Retrieval of these items can be requested in our Catalog and delivery is typically within ten minutes of the request Shelving for monographic books is on the second and third floors of the Library with periodicals and microforms on the fourth floor The links to the upper right lead to descriptions of our specialized collections and service points Library Statistics Collections and Annual Activity Collections Collections Overview Music Media Special Collections Archives Digital Collections Teacher Curriculum Center Government Documents Reserves Periodicals and Microform Reference Undergraduates Faculty Graduate Students Alumni Community Digital Collections Pins Cited at the Oviatt Exploring Research Topics Peek in
