  • The Student Conduct Process
    for the Housing Residential Life informal hearing process Violations of University Policy and or Housing Residential Life Policy will generally be handled by the Office of Housing Residential Life Incidents involving repeated violations or potential dismissal or expulsion from the University are forwarded to the University Student Conduct Officer Below is a description of the Student Conduct process for students living in the residence halls If a student allegedly violates University or Housing Residential Life policy an Incident Report is written based on information gathered during the incident and submitted within 24 hours of the incident occurring An appropriate hearing officer will then be assigned to the case Based on the information in the incident report the hearing officer will decide either to take no further action or to require the student s involved to meet with an HRL Conduct Officer for an informal hearing If an informal hearing is necessary the student will be notified by campus email to either schedule a meeting or confirm a prearranged appointment to meet with a specific HRL Conduct Officer It is the student s responsibility to check their campus email and respond to the HRL Conduct Officer s request in the designated time frame Failure to attend a scheduled informal hearing or to reschedule in advance as outlined in the notification letter may result in the case being adjudicated in the student s absence or may result in a hold being placed on the student s account At the meeting with the HRL Conduct Officer the student will have the opportunity to examine a summary of the incident and the alleged violations as well as discuss their behavior in regard to the incident After all information has been presented the HRL Conduct Officer will assess whether there is a preponderance of evidence to determine if a student did or did not violate University or Housing Residential Life Policy Note Preponderance means majority thus this standard is met if the alleged violation is more likely to be true than not true The standard is satisfied if there is greater than fifty percent chance that the alleged violation is true If the student is found responsible for violating University or Housing Residential Life Policy appropriate sanction s will be assigned Sanctioning Guidelines for serious offenses are listed at the end of this guide along with the sanctions themselves The student may appeal the decision see Appeals Process below All conduct cases are confidential and case files are kept on record for seven years Residence Hall Sanctions When a University Student Conduct Officer their designee or an HRL Conduct Officer assigns a Standard Sanction it indicates the student has been found responsible for violating a University or Housing Residential Life policy Such sanctions are designed to help the student understand how their behavior impacted others in the residence halls or University community Besides the Standard Sanctions listed below loss of privilege fines student holds completion of an educational module and or project along with other
