    Service Award April 2010 The Department of Physics and Astronomy is pleased to announce that the 2009 winner of the Feynman Award for Student Research has been awarded to Robert Barchfeld for his Senior Project titled Photometric Redshifts with Artificial Neural Networks This work was done under the supervision of Prof Vera Margoniner The Feynman Award was endowed by Professor Emeritus Gene Barnes to recognize outstanding student research projects Physics Major Sasha Moskaleva also a member of the Sac State Honors Program was recently profiled in their newsletter Sasha currently serves as the Vice President in the Sacramento State Chapter of the Society of Physics Students Congratulations to Physics Major Lisa Winters Lisa will be the first to graduate from our new concentration in Physics Teaching She s been accepted into the Sacramento State Teaching Credential Program September 2009 Congratulations to Professor Chris Taylor on receiving tenure and promotion to Associate Professor Congratulations to Prof Gary Shoemaker who has stepped down after nine years as Department Chair and joins our illustrious group of faculty serving the Faculty Early Retirement Program Prof Hossein Partovi will serve as Department Chair Congratulations to Bret Polopolus who has been elected to serve as the Associate Zone Councilor for the Society of Physics Students in 2009 2010 In this role he will represent student members of SPS from California Nevada and Hawaii on the National Council Three Sac State Physics Majors spent their summers working as summer interns James Macdougall at CERN Bret Polopolus at Kansas State and Darren Steele at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center December 2008 The Department of Physics and Astronomy welcomes new Assistant Professors Tatiana Sergan Vera Margoniner and Jérôme Bürki Dr Bürki comes to us from the University of Arizona and Drs Sergan and Margoniner have most recently been serving as lecturers in our department After many years of working in the Department of Physics and Astronomy Rachel Lyman has retired Her long time dedication to the students and faculty of the department will be sorely missed If you would like to send her a message please email it to physics csus edu and we ll make sure she get s it July 2008 Congratulations to Prof Peter Urone who is the 2008 recipient of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Outstanding University Service Award Prof Urone joins the long list of departmental honorees As the winner of this award he will be giving the faculty address at the 2008 Natural Sciences and Mathematics Commencement Congratulations Eight students and Dr DeGraffenreid traveled to UC Santa Cruz on the weekend of May 3 to attend the annual Zone 18 Society of Physics Students Meeting They had the chance to meet students from about eight other campuses in California and Nevada as well as participate in campus tours student research talks and keynote addresses May 2008 Big Glasses The Large Binocular Telescope LBT the most powerful optical telescope ever built has recently been turned on Located on Arizona s Mount Graham

    Maps Academic Calendars Forms Organizations scholarships Departmental Non Departmental Jobs Internships Instructional Program Priorities Department Employment Photos The Department of Biological Sciences offers the Bachelor of Arts BA Bachelor of Science BS a minor in Biological Sciences and a Certificate in Issues in Natural Resource Management See the Sacramento State University Catalog for a complete description of our courses degrees and certificate offerings Entry requirements and an outline of the undergraduate program are below The Major Entry Requirements 2015 16 The Biological Sciences major is impacted However unlike other impacted majors on campus students interested in majoring in Biological Sciences are not required to submit a supplemental application Instead students who identify Biological Sciences as their preferred major when they apply to the University are designated Pre Biological Sciences majors Pre majors After arriving on campus Pre majors are required to get mandatory advising at the Natural Sciences Advising Center NSAC to check that they have not already violated the Pre major requirements see below and are eligible to continue as Pre majors or matriculate into the Major Upon successful completion of the Pre Major requirements students are guaranteed a spot in the major Pre Major Requirements Completion of all Pre major courses or their equivalent with a grade of C or better BIO 1 CHEM 1 A BIO 2 STAT 1 and GE Area A2 Written Communication 3 units from ENG 5 5M 11 or 11M A GPA in the Pre major courses of 2 5 or above If a student earns less than a C in a Pre major course they may attempt to repeat the course If so only their 2nd grade will be used for requirements 1 2 No further attempts will be considered The Bachelor of Arts BA and Bachelor of Science BS degrees The
