  • Overview
    a written thesis which is based on original research and makes a new contribution to the field of biology The program offers concentrations in Biological Conservation and Molecular and Cellular Biology Students may also pursue general training in biology by electing the No Concentration option Students pursuing an MS degree in the Department of Biological Sciences design and conduct their own research under the direction of a graduate advisor and a supervisory committee which consists of two or three additional faculty members Although students work most closely with their graduate advisor as they conduct their research they are encouraged to take advantage of the expertise of their committee as well as other faculty members in the department A student s thesis research may be conducted on or off campus If it is conducted off campus a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences must be identified as the student s graduate advisor Once admitted to the program students are advised by a temporary graduate advisor or by the faculty member who agreed to serve as their graduate advisor Students are encouraged to plan their academic programs in consultation with their advisor as early as possible preferably prior to enrollment in the program Master of Arts Degree The Master of Arts MA degree is a non thesis degree program that emphasizes advanced training in biology and the ability to apply the scientific process to biological problems Combining advanced coursework 30 units with a written project based on a current research problem in biology the MA degree has two tracks a Review Paper Grant Proposal track and a Stem Cell Concentration track The Review Paper Grant Proposal track is designed for students who wish to pursue a coursework based degree program that will prepare them for a variety of careers including

    be accepted after the application deadline but only if the test was taken prior to the deadline A faculty member who has agreed to serve as their graduate advisor Two letters of recommendation from persons qualified to judge the applicant s potential for successful graduate study A statement of purpose It is recommended that applicants contact faculty with whom they would like to work well in advance of the application deadline Our experience is that students who have not obtained an agreement from a faculty member to serve as their graduate advisor i e major professor are much less likely to be admitted In the case of the MA Applied Stem Cell concentration Dr Rosalee Sprowls automatically serves as the graduate advisor NOTE Meeting all requirements for admission as a classified graduate student does not guarantee admission into the graduate program Students who have deficiencies in admission requirements that can be removed by specified additional preparation or who have not been accepted by a thesis advisor may be admitted with conditionally classified graduate status Admission as a conditionally classified graduate student does not guarantee fully classified status Fully classified graduate status is conferred when all deficiencies identified at the time of admission are removed and a biology faculty member has agreed to serve as a student s graduate advisor Any deficiencies in admission requirements at the time of acceptance will be noted on a written response to the admission application Graduate Admission Procedures All prospective graduate students including CSUS graduates must submit two applications Failure to submit both applications will result in your application not being considered for admission to the Graduate Program in Biological Sciences See Graduate Admission s for more information about University policies University application An online application for admission through CSU Mentor Two sets of official
