    being decommissioned the question remains How are residents coping with stresses of the long recovery process That was the focus of an international seminar attended by Sacramento State s Center for Collaborative Policy CCP in early March The center has a longstanding relationship with Kumamoto University in southern Japan and has exchanged delegations over the past 10 years Kumamoto sponsored the seminar to discuss community level conflict and dispute resolution evolving from the Fukushima event as well as the impact of another regional disaster devastating flash floods in the Kumamoto region two years ago The core mission of the CCP is to help public agencies and stakeholder groups coordinate effectively on public policy issues to accomplish solutions The center s role in supporting disaster recovery in Fukushima is a case in point Associate directors Adam Sutkus and Dave Ceppos participated in the seminar providing a California perspective on community based public engagement disaster recovery systems and conflict resolution techniques Seminar participants shared best practices and case studies to find new ways to address the complexities of human recovery and to manage inevitable conflicts The CCP team toured the Fukushima region speaking with prefecture level officials mayors and council members as well as community groups grappling with the recovery needs of everyday citizens It was fascinating and motivating to see the communities come together and address so many needs in the wake of this emergency Ceppos says The residents are showing an ability to form the networks needed to solve problems and engage with government systems to address long term challenges Japanese university officials hope to develop a first of its kind academic based conflict resolution program in Kumamoto to study teach and apply conflict resolution and community engagement systems These policy approaches are relatively new in Japan and are gaining

  • eSCI- Excellence in Science Instruction
    Elk Grove Unified School District and the Sacramento Area Science Project funded through a California Mathematics and Science Partnership grant Cohort 5 to provide a cohesive set of professional development services designed to improve science instruction in grades 3 5 One hundred teachers in grades 3 5 received professional development over three school years 2008 2011 impacting roughly 6 900 students Project Goals 1 Improve science instruction by enhancing teachers content knowledge and pedagogical repertoire 2 Engage teachers in the lesson study process to reflect on practice work collaboratively in site based teams review CST data develop science lessons that are aligned with California Content Standards and SBE adopted curriculum materials and apply formative student assessments Activities Each program year the Sacramento Area Science Project will provide 60 hours of intensive professional development through summer and winter institutes and 24 hours of facilitated lesson study during the school year Evaluation and Research Teacher teams were randomly assigned to either treatment receiving professional development or control groups An independent evaluation of the eSCI program will be conducted utilizing a longitudinal experimental design where the students of treatment and control teachers will be followed from the 3rd to the 5th grade The

    River City SIRC Science Projects Related to Equity in Education SPREE Conferences California Lesson Study Conference Resources Mathematics Science Contact Us Innovations in Science Instruction Through Modeling ISIM Innovations in Science Instruction though Modeling ISIM is the teacher professional development component of the Inquiry into Practice research program funded through a National Science Foundation Teacher Professional Continuum grant Award 0554652 Coordinated by the Sacramento Area Science Project a California Science Project site based jointly at the University of California Davis and California State University Sacramento the ISIM program was designed to provide two consecutive cohorts of middle and high school science teachers with two years of professional development centered in model based reasoning The ISIM teachers collaborated with educational researchers in knowledge construction throughout the Inquiry into Practice design research project As described in the original proposal the main goal of the Inquiry into Practice project is to understand how teachers first adopt and then promote pedagogical practices that engage students in model based reasoning Model based reasoning is the process of reasoning with a set of ideas specifically with a scientific model CSP Connection Article on Model Based Reasoning March 2009 Download PDF Principal Investigators Cindy Passmore Associate Professor
