    Curriculum Prerequisites Course Sequencing Time Limit PPA Catalog external link PPA Faculty Meet our Faculty PPA Faculty Governance Faculty Recruitment Faculty Resources About the Department of Public Policy and Administration The Master of Public Policy and Administration is an interdisciplinary program designed to equip its graduates with conceptual analytic and problem solving skills and experiences enabling them to deal with public sector policy and administrative issues problems and opportunities Established in 1989 In 1989 Professor Emeritus Cristy Jensen founded the Department in its current incarnation as a stand alone graduate program Since then we have awarded more than 400 MPPA degrees and counting Many of our alumni have gone on to become well respected professionals in the fields of public policy and public administration In 2006 07 the Department established the Cristy Jensen Distinguished Graduate in Public Policy and Administration award to honor those students who during their graduate career with us exemplified Dr Jensen s commitment to academic excellence and public service The Sacramento State program differs from other similar programs in that it focuses on California state and local levels of government This attractive feature is facilitated by the proximity of the CSUS campus to the main operations of the California state government The proximity offers significant advantages to students in the program providing them with a ready laboratory for observing the policy and administrative issues they will confront professionally and for gaining experience alongside existing practitioners in public policy and administration In particular the program s internship feature is greatly strengthened by the placements available in California state government local government and related organizations The program s curricular design and scheduling of courses allow students to complete the program in four semesters if enrolled full time In addition part time students may complete the program under a

    paper on The Importance of Supply and Demand Factor to Preschool Attendance at the 79th Annual Meeting of the Midwest Economic Association on March 28 in Minneapolis Rob Wassmer Professor of Public Policy and Administration had his coauthored paper on An Analysis of State and Local Government Capital Expenditure During the 2000s published in the refereed journal Public Budgeting and Finance PPA Professor Su Jin Jez is presenting her classification system for for profit colleges and universities at the Institutional Design Frontiers Summit hosted by ASU in April PPA Professor Su Jin Jez gave a presentation titled Perspectives on Financial Aid Policy Reducing the Impact of Wealth Disparities at the California Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators Day at the Capitol hosted by the California Student Aid Commission Peter Detwiler PPA Lecturer facilitated the California Housing Finance Agency s two day annual executive staff retreat The retreat was designed to write the Agency s annual business plan Rob Wassmer Professor of Public Policy and Administration at Sacramento State placed questions related to the condition of CA roads and ways to fund improvements on the most recent CA statewide Field Poll that was awarded to him and Professor Ron Fisher Michigan State University as part of the Field CSU Academic Fellowship Program The Press release is here A Sac Bee article on it is here He plans to conduct further research on this that compares CA results to the same questions asked in MI PPA Professor Andrea Venezia has co authored a book Supporting the Dream High School College Partnerships for College and Career Readiness which is coming out in May It is currently available for pre order at Corwin Publications Congratulations Andrea PPA Chair Mary Kirlin and PPA Lecturer Peter Detwiler have been working with the California Department of State Housing and Community Development on the State Housing Plan Additionally Mary Kirlin recently worked with California State Association of Counties CSAC training county officials on how to use data PPA Lecturer Peter Detwiler has been very busy recently In January he gave a talk about local government structure and powers to a Local Government Law class at McGeorge School of Law This week he went over to UC Davis and talked to a graduate seminar about the craft of policy committee consulting On February 21 PPA Lecturer Peter Detwiler is on a panel at the Planning Conservation League s annual conference talking about state laws for local land use decisions On February 26 he s presenting to the land use and development decision segment of CSAC s New Supervisors Institute along with Tim Snellings Butte County s planning director On April 15 he ll be on the Sonoma State campus to talk to an undergraduate Land Use Law class about LAFCOs and land use PPA student Josef Preciado has been promoted to Associate Director for International and Out of State Admissions at Sacramento State Emiliano Diaz the University s Director of Admissions and Outreach indicated that Jo brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge coupled with a strong desire to raise Sac State s profile Rob Wassmer Professor in Public Policy and Administration at Sac State was part of the California Economic Summit Working Landscapes Action Team that suggested public policies to pursue for A ROADMAP TO SHARED PROSPERITY The right next steps toward sustainable growth document attached This group was coordinated by California Forward of which their Executive Director Jim Mayer is a PPA Alum Fall 2014 We are proud to announce that PPA Professor Ted Lascher is the recipient of the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies 2014 15 Oustadning Scholarly and Creative Activity Award Congratulations to you Ted and to all the 2014 15 Outstanding Faculty Awards recipients Kent Anderson MPPA 2011 deputy director of economic develoopment in Layton City Utah has helped make Layton one of the top 50 cities in America Here are two articles that illustrate that point one about a partnership with the local AFB and one about what Layton City has to offer Cosmo Garvin contributing reporter on The View from Here and recent MPPA alumnus reported on Hidden Hunger Food Insecurity in Sacramento s Overlooked Neighborhoods This is an excellent piece of journalism about a serious regional issue Professors Su Jin Jez and Julian Heilig EdD program discuss an article about Teach for America in the October 2014 edition of California Educator page 21 On October 30 PPA professors PPA alumni PPA and Government students and others presented a Non Partisan Voter Information Form at the Alumni Center on campus In September Governor Brown appointed MPPA Alumnus Andrew Sturmfels as Deputy Director of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs at the California Governor s Office of Business and Economic Development GO Biz In June MPPA Distinguished Alumnus Honoree and City of West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon was awarded the prestigious 2014 City Livability Award from the U S Conference of Mayors for his leadership creativity and innovation MPPA student Josef Preciado recently presented a paper based on a class group project at the APPAM International Conference in Segovia Spain In August MPPA alumna Leslie McGorman promoted to Deputy Policy Director at NARAL Pro Choice America in Washington D C MPPA alumnus Nick Kosla is now Chair of the Orinda Planning Commission and Director of Planning and Entitlement for Pulte Group in the Bay Area HPPA President Devin Lavelle MPPA 11 wrote an article for Fox and Hounds on America s recent soccer craze and election turnout Katie Cardenas MPPA 13 co managed her mother Nancy s successful campaign for Lassen County Treasurer Tax Collector PPA alumna Lisa Phillips assumed a team lead position as Regional Acreage Limitation Coordinator for the U S Bureau of Reclamation PPA alumna Ly Lac was promoted to Cal MediConnect Operations Unit Chief at the California Department of Health Care Services PPA alumna Maya Wallace recently became External Affairs Director for California Steps
