  • One Purpose Endowment Receives $250K Seed Gift | California State University Stanislaus
    student success through One Purpose In the future earnings from the endowment will add to the funds raised by volunteers providing additional dollars that will be awarded as scholarships The Gemperle family has made an incredible statement of confidence in this University and in the One Purpose campaign said CSU Stanislaus President Joseph F Sheley And it is an investment in students who will shape the future of our region and California The seven Gemperle siblings Heidi Gemperle Anita Mahaffey Susan Abdo Peter Gemperle Richard Gemperle Stephen Gemperle and Michael Gemperle came together to make this significant gift Their father and mother the late Ernie and Annemarie Gemperle established a longstanding family involvement with the University Each of the siblings expressed their joy in continuing the tradition of their parents by supporting education and their belief in the value of investing in students My parents encouraged all of us to get an education and so for us to continue our parents legacy of supporting education is meaningful said Anita Mahaffey I believe that education is a gift that keeps on giving When you change someone s life with education you not only change his or her circumstance but you have an impact for generations to come They will inspire their children and then those children will inspire others Growing up locally and contributing to the success of Gemperle Family Farms each of the siblings has watched the region grow and recognize the impact of CSU Stanislaus graduates We ve seen the good that One Purpose does in the community and to assist students who are graduating from the University And many of these student achievements are being made by first generation students and their families said Steve Gemperle president of Gemperle Family Farms and member of the CSU Stanislaus Foundation

  • Money Magazine Names CSU Stanislaus Nation’s Top Value-Added Public University | California State University Stanislaus
    eliminating schools with a negative grade in any of those areas or a graduation rate below 50 percent University President Joseph F Sheley said the recognition is significant It means we re being noticed as one of the best colleges at serving its core constituency Sheley said Members of the region are experiencing the thrill and pride that comes with a son or daughter becoming the first in the family to earn a college degree and opening doors to success Stanislaus ranked No 3 overall on the magazine s national list with two private colleges Robert Morris University of Chicago and Mt St Mary s University of Los Angeles taking the top spots Four CSUs made Money s Top 50 list with Long Beach State at No 10 San Diego State at No 39 and Chico State at No 49 Money s value added list was computed as a subset of the magazine s annual ranking of colleges that offer overall value in education On that list Stanislaus ranked No 82 nationally tied with Cal Maritime for the top spot among the 23 CSU campuses To arrive at the rankings the magazine started by screening out schools with graduation rates below median levels then added ranking factors such as educational quality affordability and alumni earnings It used the economic and educational background of students to apply an additional grade and then computed the total affordability of the degree including availability of merit based aid the average amount of student loan burden the average time it takes to graduate and anticipated tuition increases The high marks in the Money magazine rankings closely follow those of U S News World Report which placed the University among the top 10 four year schools in the country in serving Hispanic students The report uses

    necessary to help a business utilize new software and technology to successfully manage and grow their finances My professors have provided me with real world knowledge that I will be able to apply in my career after graduation he said Learning how to apply skills and solve problems is one of the most important parts of a college education Meet Alyssa Long Alyssa Long has always had a love for reading and grew up knowing that she wanted to attend college and become an English teacher like her mother I knew that getting the best grades and being involved in my community would prepare me for success in school and in life she said I also believed that my education would be what I made of it the effort that I put in would affect both my experience in school and what I ultimately learned A dedicated student Alyssa said she was inspired by her mother not only to become an English teacher but also to pursue an education that would impact her life and her community My mother s family who are Japanese were in internment camps she explained Her family had lost everything and they knew that education was the key to building a new life Alyssa has a vision to create better circumstances for students right here in the Central Valley After she completes her bachelor s degree in liberal studies and earns her teaching credential at Stanislaus State Alyssa plans to broaden her horizons with the ultimate goal of bringing those experiences back to a classroom in the Valley She hopes to serve as an example for her future students to dream big and to be positive I want to make my community a better place to live she said That is what One Purpose is doing it s encouraging students to make a positive difference in the community Being a One Purpose scholar has reaffirmed Alyssa s goals and is motivating her to be a catalyst for giving and gratitude in her community Receiving a scholarship has fueled my fire to keep my grades up and to give back to the community that invested in me I want to be able to pay it forward someday and truly say thank you for this opportunity Meet Marcelle Winkler Pursuing her personal best has always been important to Marcelle Winkler A graduate of Pitman High School Marcelle decided to apply for the School of Nursing at Stanislaus State because of its reputation for exemplary programs and it s right here in her hometown I chose nursing because I love people and I love caring for them she said I recently participated in my first mentor day in a hospital setting and I really enjoyed it That experience deepened my confidence that nursing is the right career for me Marcelle was further motivated as the recipient of a One Purpose scholarship She said that the scholarship encouraged her to keep pushing through some of her more difficult classes

  • One Purpose Volunteers Rally to Raise $400K for Scholarships | California State University Stanislaus
    a community that supports student success said Shirley Pok vice president for university advancement at Stanislaus State The efforts of our volunteers have already resulted in scholarships for 169 outstanding students and with the success of this year s campaign that number will continue to grow Volunteers had the opportunity to meet those students whose lives have been impacted by One Purpose scholarships and they have shared how they have been inspired and encouraged to keep working hard to support more high achieving students Meeting the students who have received One Purpose scholarships and hearing their stories of success has made our fundraising effort more pertinent this year said Adrian Harrell a volunteer and Stanislaus State alumna We are motivated to reach out to the community to make an investment in students which is an investment in our future Fatimah Alfareh is a student double majoring in economics and political science at Stanislaus State and as a recipient of a One Purpose scholarship she shared that the passion and dedication of the volunteers and donors who made her scholarship possible are particularly meaningful It s really humbling and encouraging to know that there is a community that cares and is willing to help students Alfareh said Receiving a scholarship instills a sense of accomplishment and motivation in a student and it allows us to aspire to greater achievements To me One Purpose scholarships are an exceptional example of generosity It means a lot This year 550 donors pledged their support for scholarships through the One Purpose campaign 100 percent of every dollar raised will be awarded as scholarships to Stanislaus State students who demonstrate academic promise The donors and volunteers who have supported One Purpose in its second year are representative of a community that values education and invests in students at a University that fuels the region One Purpose scholarships can make a huge difference for our students and the campaign touches a lot of people s lives said Oddmund Myhre dean of the College of Education Kinesiology and Social Work who has led a team of volunteers during both years of the campaign One Purpose is about our students it s about the University and it s also about the community We know that this region needs more college graduates and One Purpose is a way to make that happen I feel we are part of building a community as much as we are about supporting students Volunteer Chris Murphy a Stanislaus State alumnus emphasized the importance of connecting people with the University and the opportunities it provides for students and for the future of the region His fundraising success this week was driven by his passion to share the value of education Stanislaus State is our University whether you are in Turlock Modesto Patterson Newman wherever you are in the region this is our University and we need a strong four year university Murphy said Through One Purpose we can make sure that people know we are
